Parenting Without the Helicopter: No More Hovering

Today, I’m talking about a question many parents, especially busy working moms, wrestle with: How involved should you be in your child’s education without becoming a helicopter parent? It’s easy to feel caught between two extremes. You can monitor every assignment, grade, teacher message, and deadline or step back to encourage independence and then worry that you’re not involved enough. But being an engaged parent doesn’t mean controlling every detail.   In this episode of The Parenting 411, Carol Muleta explores the important difference between parental engagement and helicopter parenting and shares practical ways to stay connected to your child’s education while still giving them room to develop responsibility, confidence, and independence. We look at why children benefit when parents show genuine interest in what they’re learning, without constantly monitoring their performance or immediately stepping in to solve every problem. Carol also shares five simple, five-minute connection habits that can help parents stay meaningfully involved even when work, household responsibilities, and everyday life make time feel scarce. You’ll learn why asking better questions can open up conversations about school, why the school portal should be treated more like a dashboard than a surveillance camera, how building relationships with teachers can strengthen the connection between home and school, and why celebrating effort, persistence, curiosity, and growth can matter just as much as celebrating grades. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that your child doesn’t need another manager. They need a parent who is present, interested, and willing to walk alongside them while allowing them to take ownership of their learning. Small moments count. Sometimes five intentional minutes can communicate something powerful: Your learning matters to me. Your growth matters to me. And I’m here when you need me. Beyond the Phone Ban — Who’s Really In Control

Today, we're talking about a growing trend in schools across the United States and around the world: phone-free school policies. But while schools can restrict access to smartphones during the day, there's a bigger question parents need to consider: Are we teaching our children how to manage technology when no one is there to enforce the rules? In this episode of The Parenting 411, Carol Muleta explores what the phone-free school movement means for families and why simply taking phones away isn't enough to build healthy digital habits. We discuss the difference between external restrictions and genuine self-regulation, why children need opportunities to develop judgment and independence, and how parents can help them recognize when technology is serving them—and when it's beginning to control them. Carol shares five practical strategies for raising digitally responsible children, including teaching self-regulation through conversation, creating a family technology agreement, establishing meaningful phone-free moments, preparing an emergency communication plan, and modeling the same healthy technology habits we expect from our children. We also explore why screen-time conversations should focus on what technology may be crowding out—family connection, sleep, face-to-face communication, physical activity, and the ability to tolerate boredom. Carol explains how parents can respond to resistance without abandoning boundaries and why technology rules should evolve as children mature. Ultimately, this conversation is about moving beyond phone bans and raising children who can make wise decisions about technology independently. Because one day, there won't be a teacher, parent, or locked phone pouch reminding them to put the device away. There will simply be your child, their phone, and a choice. The goal isn't just to manage our children's behavior today. It's to prepare them to manage themselves tomorrow. Beyond Divorce: Becoming Yourself Again

Today, I sit down with Dr. Arlayn Castle, a divorce and life rebuild strategist and founder of A Castle of Knowledge, about how working moms can function outwardly after separation or divorce while feeling disconnected inside. We discuss how suppressed anger, resentment, betrayal, and self-blame can linger through emotional triggers and influence daily decisions, including dating “out of pain.” Dr. Castle distinguishes “moving on” (external functioning) from “rebuilding” (intentional internal work) and explains why rebuilding happens AFTERdivorce, not during a troubled marriage. We also cover establishing a new baseline through values, boundaries, and intention, plus co-parenting practices that protect children from conflict and avoid blaming.  Learn more about Dr. Castle at https://www.castleofknowledge.com       CHAPTERS 00:00 Working Mom Divorce Reality 03:34 Looking Fine Outside 11:20 When Friends Can’t Relate 13:07 Moving On Vs Rebuilding 16:49 Client Transformation Story 22:03 Long Marriage Different Grief 26:33 Staying For Kids Myth 28:53 Hurting Divorcee Dynamic 38:36 No Divorce Party 45:41 Co Parenting Narrative 01:00:20 Rebuilding Is Possible       Check out our Brand Partners for this Episode:   The Parenting 411 Mother’s Work - Motherhood doesn’t come with a roadmap, but you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Homework In The Age of AI

Artificial intelligence can write the essay, solve the math problem, summarize the chapter, and brainstorm the science project. But if AI helps our children produce better work, does that necessarily mean they’re learning more? In this episode of The Parenting 411 Podcast, I explore one of the newest challenges showing up around the homework table: helping children use AI without allowing it to do the thinking for them.  We don’t want to make AI the villain, nor do we want to take on the role of technology police. AI is likely to remain part of our children’s education, careers, and everyday lives. Instead, parents have an opportunity to help children develop the judgment to know when technology is supporting their learning and when it is replacing it. I share practical ways to make AI a learning partner rather than a shortcut. The conversation also moves beyond homework into something even bigger: integrity, responsibility, and judgment. By creating clear family guidelines and approaching AI use with curiosity rather than accusation, you can help your children learn to ask important questions for themselves: Is this true? Is this really my work? Have I actually learned something? Am I still thinking for myself?  Together, we can raise children who can use powerful technology without giving away the power of their own minds. Kids Are Reading Less

Our children are consuming more information than ever—but are they spending enough time slowing down, thinking deeply, and making sense of what they encounter? In this episode, I look beyond declining reading scores to explore a bigger concern: what happens when scanning, swiping, and constant stimulation begin to crowd out the kind of sustained attention that reading helps develop? And if your child insists, “I hate reading,” the answer may not be another lecture, reading log, or required book. Carol shares practical ways parents can make reading feel more inviting and more connected to a child’s own interests—without turning it into another performance measure. From giving children meaningful choices to modeling reading at home, protecting small pockets of quiet, having better conversations about books, and keeping shared reading alive as children grow, this episode offers realistic ideas families can actually use. Most importantly, this conversation is about more than raising kids who finish books. It’s about raising children who are curious, discerning, able to focus, and willing to ask thoughtful questions about the information coming at them from everywhere. If reading has become a struggle in your home—or you simply want to help your child develop a stronger relationship with books, ideas, and learning—this episode will give you a fresh place to start.   CHAPTERS 00:00 — Reading Is About More Than Test Scores 02:30 — Reading vs. Scanning 05:00 — When Reading Becomes Another Performance Metric 14:00 — Keep Shared Reading Alive 16:00 — “I Hate Reading!” Now What? 18:00 — Conversation Starters for the Weekend 19:00 — The Bigger Goal: Raising Thinkers 20:00 — Readers Are Leaders CHECK OUT OUR BRAND PARTNERS for this episode.  The Parenting 411 Mother’s Work - Motherhood doesn’t come with a roadmap, but you don’t have to figure it all out alone. What's In a Name? Legacy!

This is an intriguing conversation with Dr. Tamara Nall, founder of the Junia Movement.  We talk about legacy, identity, and a formal naming tradition that gives daughters their mother’s full name.  It is the feminine equivalent of “Junior,” using the suffix Junia and abbreviation “JN.” Dr. Nall shares how her challenging journey to motherhood led her to reflect on legacy and create a structured option for mothers who want to pass down their names. She notes that about 30,000 U.S. females are named after their mothers and describes what the Junia Legacy is all about and what she has done formalize this naming practice and gain federal recognition of Junia in official databases. Today, I talk with stay-at-home mom and social media creator Chloe Brewster about her “crunchy,” non-toxic approach to motherhood and the judgment moms face for their choices. Chloe shares how her journey started, especially, the moment which led to her deep dive into researching ingredients in food and cleaning products. What she learned intensified her efforts to find safe, healthy products once she became pregnant. Chloe describes an 80/20 approach where food dyes, sweet snacks and clothing materials are concerned. She also explains how she discusses food choices with her young children without creating fear and emphasizes building adventurous palates in her children.
