E: 99 The Feed Room Is Creating Half the Problems

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Walk into the average horse barn and tell me what you see in the feed room. Bags of complete feed. Probably a senior formula. Maybe a ration balancer sitting next to a fat supplement sitting next to a joint supplement sitting next to a hoof supplement sitting next to something for ulcers. And somewhere in the back, a bucket of electrolytes that nobody's really sure if they still need. And the horse? Still ouchy. Still slow to recover. Still metabolically weird. Still not quite right. The owner? Trying harder. Buying more. Doing everything they've been told to do. Here's the thing nobody in the feed aisle or the feed store is going to tell you: The feed room is probably creating half the problems. Not because you're doing it wrong on purpose. But because the entire conventional approach to feeding horses was built around calories, weight, and convenience -- not around equine physiology. Not around what actually drives inflammation. Not around what horses were designed to eat. Today, we're going to get into all of it. What's hiding in your feed room. Why your horse can look totally fine on the outside and still be struggling at the cellular level. Why supplements keep stacking up and nothing ever really resolves. And what it actually looks like when you feed for physiology instead of feeding for appearances. Stay with me. This one's going to shift some things for you. E: 97 Why Your Horse Isn't Absorbing Vitamin E — Even at 8,000–10,000 IU

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Why isn't my horse absorbing vitamin E? In this episode, we cover the difference between natural d-alpha-tocopherol and synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol, why horses on hay are almost always starting from deficiency, how oxidative stress from iron overload, high-PUFA fats, and inflammation depletes vitamin E faster than you can replace it, and how to actually troubleshoot non-response. E: 97 Light as a Biological Signal: What It Means for You and Your Horse

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show Light is one of the most overlooked inputs in both human and equine health—and it may be one of the most impactful. We spend so much time focusing on nutrition, supplements, and protocols… but the body responds to its environment first. And light is a primary signal that helps regulate circadian rhythm, hormone patterns, energy production, and nervous system balance. In this episode, I sit down with the creator of Visum Light to explore how targeted light exposure can support the body’s natural rhythms—and why this piece is often missing when progress feels stalled. We also break down what actually matters when it comes to light devices, including key differences in wavelength, intensity, and delivery—especially as more products enter the market. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” with nutrition but still not seeing the results you expect, this episode will help you understand why. Because it’s not just what you’re feeding the body—  it’s how the body is responding to its environment. E: 96 He Was Already on a Forage-Based Diet… So Why Wasn’t He Improving?

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show If your horse is already on a forage-based, low inflammatory feeding program and you’re still not seeing the changes you expected… you’re not alone. In this episode, we walk through a common scenario: a horse on a well-structured nutrition program that still appears “stuck.” Instead of immediately changing the feed or adding more supplements, we explore another layer—how feeding strategy, daily routine, and overall management can influence how a horse utilizes nutrition. This episode focuses on four key areas to review when progress stalls: • Feeding patterns and alignment with natural grazing behavior  • Daily movement, turnout, and routine  • Mineral balance within the total diet  • Overall feed inputs, including forage quality and storage Research from the National Research Council highlights the importance of forage-based nutrition and feeding management in supporting digestive health and normal behavior patterns. Guidelines from the American Association of Equine Practitioners also emphasize the role of turnout, movement, and daily living conditions in overall equine well-being. The goal of this episode is not to diagnose or treat any condition, but to provide a broader framework for evaluating nutrition and management—always in collaboration with your veterinarian. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” and still not seeing the results you expected, this conversation will give you a new way to assess what might be missing. Circadian Rhythm in Horses: The Missing Link in Metabolic Health, Insulin Resistance & Weight Loss

Send Audrey a Text to get your question answered on the show If your horse is on the “perfect” program — low sugar, balanced minerals, anti-inflammatory diet — but still struggling with weight, insulin resistance, or metabolic issues… you may be missing one critical piece: Circadian rhythm. In this episode, we break down how light — specifically timing of light exposure — acts as a primary regulator of metabolism. Human research shows that delaying morning light exposure is associated with higher body fat, independent of diet and exercise. And horses, as highly light-sensitive, seasonal animals, may be even more impacted by circadian disruption. We’ll cover:  How light controls metabolic signaling in the body  Why stalled horses and delayed turnout may contribute to metabolic dysfunction  The connection between circadian rhythm, insulin sensitivity, and fat storage  A new framework: the 4th pillar of metabolic health in horses If you’ve been doing everything right and still not seeing progress… this episode will change how you look at your horse’s environment forever.
