Embodied Healing: Why You Can’t Think Your Way Into Lasting Change

What if healing isn’t something you can think your way through, but something your body has to experience? In this episode of the AWAKEN series, Jeanne explores E for Embodied Healing and why insight and self-awareness, while essential, are not enough to create lasting transformation. We can understand our patterns, know exactly what we “should” be doing, and still find ourselves repeating the same behaviours. That’s because the gap between knowing and doing doesn’t just live in the intellect; it lives in the nervous system. Jeanne explores the connection between physiology and psychology, including how the body can hold onto patterns of stress, threat, and past experiences long after the conscious mind understands what happened. She also looks at the heart-brain connection, the vagus nerve, nervous system regulation, and why learning to listen to the body can help expand our capacity for emotional regulation, connection, and recovery. Through simple embodiment practices—including breathwork, humming, movement, grounding, and nervous system awareness—Jeanne shares how we can begin shifting from survival and constriction toward greater safety and regulation. Healing becomes less about collecting more information and more about creating a daily practice of noticing, feeling, and responding to what is alive within us. The Knowing-Doing Gap: Why Insight Alone Doesn’t Create Change

In this episode of Naturally High, Jeanne explores something many of us struggle with: why we can know exactly what we need to do and still have such a hard time doing it. We can read the books, listen to the podcasts, understand our triggers, and recognize our patterns, but insight alone doesn’t create transformation. Real change happens when we begin taking what we know and putting it into practice, especially in the moments when falling back into what’s familiar feels so much easier. Jeanne unpacks why our brains and bodies naturally return to old patterns when we’re stressed, lonely, uncomfortable, or emotionally activated. Every time we choose a different response—taking the walk, holding the boundary, sitting with an uncomfortable feeling, or navigating an experience sober—we begin creating new evidence that another way is possible. These small, repeated choices help us build self-trust, strengthen our resilience, and create new pathways for how we respond to life. This episode is an invitation to get curious about one simple question: What do I already know that I’m not yet practicing? Jeanne explores how consistent daily practices help us build health and recovery capital, giving us greater reserves when life inevitably gets difficult. Lasting transformation isn’t about changing everything overnight or doing it perfectly. It’s about creating a small bridge between insight and action—learning, practicing, reflecting, and repeating—one intentional choice at a time. The Power of Affirmation: Healing Shame, Reclaiming Your Voice & Returning to Your True Self

In this episode of Naturally High, Jeanne continues the AWAKEN Series by exploring the second A in her proprietary methodology: Affirming. More than positive thinking or repeating affirmations, true affirmation is about emotionally validating your lived experience, so your nervous system can finally stop bracing for the next impact and begin to heal. Many of us grew up emotionally unseen, dismissed, minimized, or shamed. Over time, this lack of validation can quietly shape our lives, contributing to perfectionism, people-pleasing, addiction, emotional numbness, and the belief that there is something inherently wrong with us. Jeanne explains why one of the most powerful shifts we can make is moving from asking, "What's wrong with me?" to "What happened to me?" Drawing from trauma-informed, attachment-based, and somatic perspectives, Jeanne explores why healing requires more than understanding our past intellectually. Lasting transformation happens when we create enough safety to reconnect with the parts of ourselves that developed to protect us. As our nervous system begins to trust that healing is possible, shame loosens, self-compassion grows, and our authentic self has room to emerge. This conversation is an invitation to stop abandoning yourself, honour your lived experience, and begin affirming your own healing from the inside out. Healing the Whole Family: Breaking the Cycles of Addiction with Jeff Jones

When addiction enters a family, it rarely affects just one person. Yet far too often, recovery focuses exclusively on the individual while the entire family system continues to carry the weight of shame, secrecy, anxiety, and generations of unspoken patterns. In this powerful episode of Naturally High, Jeanne Foot sits down with clinician, author, and family recovery expert Jeff Jones, founder of Rethinking Addiction: The Family Recovery Solution, to explore why lasting recovery begins by healing the entire family, not just the person struggling with addiction. Together, Jeanne and Jeff unpack the hidden dynamics that quietly shape addiction, including intergenerational trauma, family roles, nervous system dysregulation, enabling, and the stories that are passed down through generations. They discuss why families often become trapped in cycles of blame, fear, and black-and-white thinking, and how shifting from reacting to responding creates space for healing.  Through practical wisdom and decades of clinical experience, they explore the importance of boundaries, compassion, emotional regulation, coaching, therapy, and building recovery capital within the family system. This conversation is a compassionate invitation for parents, partners, siblings, clinicians, and anyone affected by addiction to stop asking, "How do I fix my loved one?" and instead ask, "How can our family heal together?" Because when families learn healthier patterns, recovery becomes stronger, relationships become safer, and hope becomes possible. About Jeff Jones Jeff Jones is a family recovery coach, author, and founder of Rethinking Addiction: The Family Recovery Solution. With decades of experience as a therapist and coach, Jeff specializes in helping families heal from the impact of addiction by addressing trauma, family systems, and nervous system regulation. His innovative, family-first approach empowers loved ones to become active participants in the recovery process, creating healthier relationships and lasting change, whether someone is in active addiction, treatment, or long-term recovery. The State Shift Method: Turning Resistance into Your Greatest Strength with Sylvia Holtslag

What if the very thing you're resisting is actually the doorway to your next breakthrough? In this inspiring episode of Naturally High, Jeanne welcomes Sylvia Holtslag, founder of the State Shift Institute and creator of the State Shift Method—a practical coaching framework designed to help people move beyond insight and into meaningful action. Drawing inspiration from Phil Stutz and Barry Michels' The Tools, Jungian shadow work, Michael Singer's teachings on surrender, and Heroic principles of discipline and accountability, Sylvia shares how she transformed what looked like "normal" habits, including grey-area drinking, smoking, shopping, scrolling, and constant distraction, into a life of purpose, freedom, and service. Together, Jeanne and Sylvia explore why knowing what to do is rarely enough, how our inner saboteur keeps us stuck, and why real transformation begins when we're willing to lean into discomfort rather than avoid it. Sylvia also guides Jeanne through a live demonstration of the State Shift Method using her coaching cards, offering listeners a practical exercise they can immediately apply to their own lives. Whether you're recovering from addiction, perfectionism, procrastination, trauma, or simply feeling stuck, this conversation offers powerful tools for moving from resistance to resilience. Worthiness: Reclaiming Your Value & Breaking Free from the Stories That Hold You Back

What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want isn't your circumstances, but the story you've been telling yourself about your worth? In this episode of Naturally High, Jeanne Foot continues exploring the AWAKEN Method, building on the foundation of awareness by diving into one of the most influential forces shaping our lives: worthiness. Jeanne explains how our earliest experiences and subconscious conditioning create the internal narratives that quietly determine our relationships, confidence, health, happiness, and ability to pursue our dreams. Jeanne explores why so many of us unknowingly trade authenticity for acceptance, struggle to ask for what we truly want, and remain trapped in repetitive patterns driven by fear, self-criticism, and outdated beliefs. She explains why most of our daily thoughts are simply recycled from the day before, making conscious awareness the first step toward lasting transformation. Through thoughtful self-inquiry, listeners are invited to question the stories they've always believed and begin separating fact from the fiction of the inner critic. Finally, Jeanne examines the connection between self-worth, addiction, perfectionism, control, and personal responsibility. She reminds us that no amount of external success can heal an internal wound, and that lasting freedom comes from awakening the inner healer, embracing radical responsibility, and recognizing that each of us has a unique spiritual curriculum designed for growth. This episode is a powerful invitation to reclaim your inherent worth, reconnect with your authentic self, and begin creating a life guided by purpose rather than fear. — Contact Jeanne Foot | The Recovery Concierge:  TheRecoveryConcierge.comLinkedin: Jeanne FootLinkedIn: The Recovery ConciergeInstagram: The Recovery ConciergeFacebook: The Recovery ConciergeTwitter: @recvryconcierge

Bonus Episode: Why This Conversation on Stigma Matters with Dr. Casey Grover

This week’s episode is a little different. This special conversation was originally recorded for the Addiction Medicine Made Easy podcast with Dr. Casey Grover—an emergency physician, addiction specialist, and passionate advocate for compassionate, evidence-based addiction care. This episode is being released as a feed drop, meaning you'll find it on both podcast feeds to help bring this important conversation to a wider audience. Jeanne wanted to share this interview with the Naturally High community because at its heart is a shared mission: reducing stigma, promoting compassionate care, and helping transform the way we understand addiction and recovery. If you’re new to the Naturally High podcast, welcome! Here we explore emotional sobriety while closing the knowing-doing gap and creating a life you no longer need to escape from. Meaningful change often begins with one person choosing to speak up, advocate, and care deeply. If this conversation resonates with you, we encourage you to also subscribe to Addiction Medicine Made Easy and continue exploring Dr. Casey Grover's work. What you’ll discover in this episode: Why reducing stigma is essential to improving addiction careHow compassionate, evidence-informed conversations create lasting changeThe mission behind Naturally High and emotional sobrietyWhy redesigning your life—not simply stopping a behaviour—is at the heart of sustainable recoveryA reminder that one person can make an extraordinary differenceAbout Dr. Casey Grover Dr. Casey Grover is an emergency physician, addiction medicine specialist, and host of the Addiction Medicine Made Easy podcast. Working daily on the front lines of overdose, withdrawal, and addiction treatment, he is committed to modernizing addiction medicine through education, compassionate care, and reducing stigma for patients and families alike.  — Stigma doesn’t just hurt feelings, it changes medical decisions, family dynamics, and whether someone stays in care long enough to recover. That’s why we sat down with Jeanne Foot, founder and CEO of the Recovery Concierge and host of the Naturally High Podcast, for an honest conversation about what stigma against substance use disorders looks like in real life and what we can do differently. We trace stigma from the personal to the systemic: Jeanne’s experience entering recovery in the early 1990s, the shame that follows families when a child is struggling, and the quiet “whispering” that keeps people isolated. We also talk about stigma in healthcare, including how people in alcohol withdrawal or opioid withdrawal can be treated as if they don’t deserve comfort or evidence-based care, even though alcohol detox can be fatal and fentanyl has made relapse risk terrifyingly high. From there, we get practical. We share how compassion and advocacy help clients face judgment without bolting from care, why nervous system regulation tools matter in the hardest moments, and how fundamentals like sleep, nutrition, and movement can support mental health and addiction recovery alongside therapy and medication. We also dig into language, why labels can wound, and why the best recovery plan is the one that fits the person, whether that’s AA, SMART Recovery, peer support, or something unconventional that actually works.
