Talk, Unleashed

Cathy Brooks

What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today’s world? Good questions, right? That’s what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it’s why she created Talk, Unleashed – a podcast of candid conversation. Sometimes as commentary. Sometimes as discussions with fascinating people doing remarkable things. Topics range widely and all of them have one thing in common. Dogs.

    Surprises (and Trees)

Henry David Thoreau spent just a bit over two years at Walden Pond. He removed himself entirely from civilization and then returned with a viewpoint that reverberates today. I'm in a bit of my own On Walden Pond time, as you know, and this week's lesson is particularly related to that. Mastering true connection with my dogs requires that I be fully present with them, fully aware of our surroundings and exquisitely attentive to what that experience is. In one way it's deeply present and connected, and yet it also means that I'm not attentive to the larger picture or even my own experience. In this week's episode I shift that - taking a rare walk in the woods without my dogs, and finding new perspectives and discoveries as a result. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn’t easy. That’s why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity.  Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It’s about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it’s unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed.  This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. #livinginthewoods #waldenpond #leadership #dogbehavior #dogtraining #leadershipcoach #consciouscommunication #TalkUnleashed #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

    Dragonflies

Springtime means a lot of things when you live in the woods. The wildlife is the best part. Except for the bugs — and Virginia’s insect community is epic. Mosquitos that could carry away small children sort of thing. It didn’t occur to me there might be some sort of “message” with them. Until recently I was the one who screamed as I swatted, smushed, or otherwise whacked any bug in my space. I’ve turned into the person who gently captures and carries spiders outside. In the process I’ve also come to learn that each of these beings also carries a message according to many indigenous people. So if you’re someone repelled by the “woo woo”-ness of such things, this week’s episode might not be for you. But if you’re ready to take a little wander, dig in. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Forest for the Trees

I’m not sure I’ll ever come to an end of learning where nature is concerned. She seems an infinite source teaching. The best part is that the lessons are ones I began as a kid; and which managed to stay fresh despite my having  spent most of my adult life living in urban-oriented places. Removing oneself from the candy-coating of concrete heavy places and inserting oneself into the middle of Nature has a way of rebooting things. This isn’t a new concept. Writers and other thinkers over time have generated substantive works by reconnecting with the circadian rhythms of the natural world. Walden Pond, anyone? Thing is - how do you take those lessons and hold on to them when the froth and chaos of a so-called civilized world? Most folks don’t. In fact, most folks never even plug in to nature to get recalibrated. If that’s you, welcome. Mindful Writing (and Trees)

I don’t sit still very easily or very often. At least not naturally. My natural resting state is something around Mach 5, so learning to be still to be in the moment without needing to do anything, it’s taken practice. Of course they DO call it a meditation “practice”. What I’ve also learned is that meditation doesn’t need to be sitting in some sort of cross-legged position in silence while incense burns.  Sometimes, it can be as simple as being deeply intentional about a single, simple act. And that’s what I discuss this week - along with noticing something interesting about the different roles that various trees play in the forest. Michael Shihkashio - Aggressive Dogs and Human Leadership

DUE TO A SLIGHT PRODUCTION BACKLOG, THIS WEEK WE'RE REPEATING ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR EPISODES - OUR FIRST INTERVIEW WITH RENOWNED DOG TRAINER, MICHAEL SHIHKASHIO. BACK NEXT WEEK WITH NEW AND GROOVY STUFF ... ENJOY! In the world of dog training, there are some who have opted to do the really hard work – focusing entirely on the dogs that everyone else rejects. For many dogs, these dedicated individuals are the last house on the block. If their work doesn’t “take” these are the dogs that end up being euthanized. Going in to this work is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it requires a kind of heart and empathy that goes above and beyond just regular dog education. Enter Michael Shikashio – who came to dog training almost by accident after spending time fostering dogs. Through that volunteer work, he began to see dogs with deep behavioral issues. Dogs that had little chance of finding permanent homes without substantial help. So he decided that he’d do something about it. In this episode Michael talks about his “why” and how a dog named Sarge got him on this path without his even realizing it. What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today’s world? Good questions, right? That’s what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it’s why she created Talk, Unleashed – a new podcast of entirely candid conversations with fascinating people doing remarkable things. This weekly podcast will feature guests from arts and entertainment to business to technology to food to activism to politics (well, we’ll see on that last one). Talk Unleashed invites these influencers to consider the things that have led to them to where they are, the lessons they’ve learned and how all those things can come together to create a better world. #UnleashedLeadership #TalkUnleashed #MichaelShikashio #AggressiveDogs #TheHydrantClub #DogTraining #CommunicationsCoaching #LeadershipCoaching #Pitbull

Boundaries - The Walk for Peace

I never know whether to be amused or pissed off when people take a word that has importance and value and turn it into something other than what it is. Like boundaries. On the one hand a deeply overindulged society rails against the idea that people are somehow entitled to do whatever they want and on the other hand complain when people whose boundaries are different come up against them. Truth is in a civilized society boundaries are crucial for balance, harmony and some semblance of symbiosis. But what are healthy boundaries? How does one enforce them without being an a*****e. And most importantly for the purposes of this podcast, what on earth does that have to do with dogs? In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn’t easy. That’s why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. My Peaceful Day - Walk for Peace

Another episode inspired by the Venerable Monks and the Walk for Peace.  This week - a simple concept that cuts through complexity. The simplicity, and complexity of inner peace. It’s easy to be swept up by circumstances these days. Easy to allow the froth and frenzy that is the world to determine what kind of day you’re going to have. It’s exhausting. What if it’s not? What if it doesn’t have to be that way and doesn’t have to be hard? What if you have full agency to determine your own day? Spoiler alert - you do. And in this week’s episode, that’s what I share. Mindful Traffic - Walk for Peace

There are few things that will torpedo my sense of serenity faster, than traffic.  And I know I’m not alone.  Now imagine hundreds of people, at night, it’s dark and very cold. The road is narrow, crowded and there are piles of snow everywhere. Traffic comes to a dead stop. And no one gets mad. That’s what happens when masses of people get a chance to hear a message of peace from a group of monks and then take those learnings into the world. And that’s the scene for this week’s episode.
