What is Missing from Outdoor Media Today?

Last week, I attended the annual Outdoor Media Summit in Asheville, NC. It is the largest gathering of outdoor media professionals in the country, and during the show, I asked media, brands, PR, and others in the industry a range of questions. One of the main questions I asked journalists and other media was: What do you think is missing from outdoor media today, and how do you think we can fix it? In this episode, you'll get a taste of what many of them and I think about where outdoor media is failing and what we can do better. 232. Tick Season Is Changing. How to Stay Safe Outdoors with Dr. Richard Horowitz

Tick-borne illnesses are, unfortunately, something many of us who love spending time outdoors have a personal relationship with.  If you haven’t had one yourself, you likely can think of someone you know who has had one. And I questioned putting out an episode on tick-borne illnesses in late Autumn, but then I remembered an article that I wrote a couple of years back about how tick season is not only expanding to new areas across the country, but in many places the season is much longer than it used to be, too. Dr. Horowitz is a board-certified internal medicine doctor and medical director of the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center, an integrative medical center that combines both mainstream and integrative approaches in the treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne disorders.  He has treated over 13,000 Lyme and tick-borne disease patients over the last 42 years, with patients coming from around the world to his clinic, and has advised HHS, the NY State Department of Health, as well as government agencies across the globe.  His research and dedication to studying, understanding, and listening to patient concerns have helped lead many of his patients into long-term remission from Lyme disease. And in episode 232 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we benefit from him sharing that knowledge with us so we can get outside more safely and help protect our families, including our pets, from ticks and the many diseases they carry. 231. The Future of Outdoor Gear Starts with Old Ropes with Tobias Steinegger from Mammut

When you hear the brand name Mammut, what product do you think of? I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you said: Ropes.  Founded in 1862 in Switzerland, the company initially produced ropes primarily for agriculture.  It wasn’t until the 1950s that the company shifted focus to mountaineering ropes and began trading under the name Mammut in 1952. While Mammut has expanded its product offerings substantially since the 1950s, ropes remain a big part of the company's identity and something customers expect to see developed further.  Part of that development goes beyond rope performance and into harder questions about the environmental impact of making them. And those are the questions we tackle with our guest, Tobias Steinegger, the head of corporate responsibility at Mammut.  Tobias grew up near the Swiss Alps and developed an early passion for the outdoors, shaping his commitment to nature and preserving these environments. In his role at Mammut, he leads the company’s responsibility agenda, focusing on climate strategy, circular business models, and sustainable materials.  And if you’re a nerd for textiles and sustainability, this episode is most definitely for you. Tobias gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how sometimes the “boring” projects can make the most impact, and well, I’ll let Tobias say the rest. 230. What 3500 Miles on a Bike Teaches You About Owning Less with Taylor Nichols

Something I’ve always loved about human-powered adventures is that they can teach you a lot about what you really need to live a happy, fulfilled life. Access to safe and easy biking routes and walking paths is also an avenue to building community. But integrating human modes of transit isn't always easy in the United States. In many ways, our limited access to biking and walking is by design. My guest today is Taylor Nichols. Taylor is the producer and co-host of Bike Talk, a podcast and radio show covering urban planning, cycling, and bicycle advocacy.  An avid cyclist himself, he combines his background in journalism and storytelling to explore how bikes shape transportation, communities, and public policy. 229. The History and Future of America's Public Lands with Will De Man

When the political moment feels overwhelming, what role do public lands actually play?  Are they a luxury issue or something more fundamental to democracy itself? These are some of the core questions at the root of our conversation today, but much of what we need to know to protect our public lands might actually come from the history of these lands themselves.  Will De Man is a Michigan-based educator, writer, and public land advocate. He combines history and advocacy to help his audience understand and respond to the many issues our public lands and national parks are facing.  And as you’ll hear in my full conversation with Will, he challenges us to reevaluate our relationship with civic engagement, to find beacons of hope through dark times, and to reflect on the history that has brought us to the public lands we know and love today.
