    The Homeschool Alliance

When it comes to education, we often see a massive battleground between public school districts and homeschool families. But in Vinton-Shellsburg, Iowa, our stomping ground, they’ve engineered a blueprint that proves it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing war. By building a strategic alliance, they’ve created a supportive network where independent home education and public district resources work hand-in-hand to help kids win. This episode takes us home, to our home school district. And I have brought Izaak’s supporting homeschool teacher from the Vinton-Shellsburg school district to share his perspective on how and why the homeschool program and the school district work so well together. Anthony Church is a supporting teacher within that highly successful Vinton-Shellsburg homeschool program. In the first half of our discussion today, Anthony is giving us a peak at how this collaborative system works, why it succeeds, and how other communities can replicate it. But Anthony isn't just watching the perimeter for other people’s kids anymore. In the second half of our conversation, we are diving into his highest-stakes personal assignment yet: As of the making of this episode, Anthony is an expecting dad. He’s about to step onto the front lines of fatherhood for the very first time so we will pick his brain about that phase of life. As mentioned in this episode, for homeschool resources or any questions, email Ed Dickerson at: edickers@netins.net and write "homeschool inquiry" in the subject line and ask for his free guide book resource that has helped so many families. Beyond the Biological

When you step into the role of a foster dad, an adoptive father, or a stepdad, you are entering a territory that has already experienced a structural collapse. The child under your care isn't starting from scratch; they are carrying the invisible weight of trauma, rejection, or loss. In these high-stakes dynamics, traditional 'command-and-control' parenting doesn't just fail—it can actually cause further damage. A child who has experienced trauma doesn't need a commander; they need a safe harbor. They need a father who understands the science of trauma and the delicate art of building a secure attachment. And since most of us don’t understand the science of trauma much less the art of building that secure attachment, I've brought someone on the program who does understand this well. Bonnie Butler is a specialized coach for adoptive, foster, and step-parents. Bonnie is here to give us the facts we need to know on trauma-informed parenting. She’s going to show us how to look past a child’s defensive behavior, understand the root of their fear, and deploy the specific bonding strategies that turn a house of strangers into a durable, united home.
