Prepare to Serve - Burning or Burnt - Acts 9:19-31

The dramatic transformation of Saul from a violent persecutor of Christians to a bold proclaimer of Christ serves as a powerful testament to authentic faith. Immediately after encountering Jesus, Saul began preaching in Damascus synagogues, demonstrating that true conversion results in immediate and visible life change. Unlike temporary trends, his commitment persisted through intense opposition and death threats in both Damascus and Jerusalem. The authenticity of his conversion was evident through his willingness to face persecution for his faith. Barnabas played a crucial role in Saul's early Christian journey by vouching for him to the Jerusalem church, highlighting the importance of community and encouragement in spiritual growth. This reminds us that authentic faith isn't lived in isolation but thrives within a supportive community of believers. Through trials and victories, Saul's story teaches us that true Christianity transforms our entire worldview and produces lasting fruit that impacts others.

Mighty God - Christmas Carols - Psalm 145

Christmas is a season of hope, even in the darkest times. Illustrated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poignant carol, 'I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,' this reflection explores the profound hope found in the mighty power of God. Longfellow's personal tragedies during the American Civil War led him to pen a poem that ends with a powerful reminder of God's enduring presence and justice. Jesus Christ, referred to as 'Mighty God' in Isaiah 9:6, exemplifies this hope and power. His life, death, and resurrection demonstrate His might and control over all creation. Psalm 145 calls us to praise God daily, recognizing His unsearchable greatness and continuous provision. This reflection challenges us to renew our hope in God, share His goodness with future generations, and trust in His eternal kingdom. Find out more about our church at durbinchurch.org

In this reflection on James 4:7-12, we delve into the themes of humility, grace, and our relationship with God and each other. Using the story of Sir Walter Raleigh as a powerful metaphor, we learn the importance of humble submission to God. James calls us to submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to Him through prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. This passage emphasizes the need for repentance and cleansing of our hearts. Within the church, we are encouraged to treat each other with respect and love, avoiding negative speech and supporting one another in faith. Reflect on your relationship with God and interactions with others to live out these principles. In, Not Of - Tested Faith - James 4:1-6

In James Chapter 4, we are confronted with the hidden depths of our sins and the boundless grace of God. The story of the Titanic serves as a metaphor, illustrating how our visible conflicts are often just the tip of the iceberg, with deeper sinful desires lurking beneath the surface. James exposes these hidden passions within the church, urging believers to look beyond surface-level quarrels and address the root causes of their conflicts. James emphasizes that our internal desires and passions, which are often at odds with God's will, lead to quarrels, fights, and even murder among believers. He warns that friendship with the world makes us enemies of God, leading to spiritual adultery. Despite these challenges, James offers a message of hope: God's grace is greater than our sin. He extends this grace to those who humble themselves and seek His forgiveness. Reflect on your desires, seek God's grace, and strive for unity within the church community.

Watch Your Mouth - Tested Faith - James 3:1-12

Based on James 3:1-12, this message delves into the significant impact of our words on our spiritual growth and relationships. It begins by challenging us to evaluate our lives against God's standard of righteousness, recognizing our sin nature and the need for repentance. The message highlights the responsibility of teachers and the powerful influence of the tongue, comparing it to a bit in a horse's mouth and a rudder on a ship. Despite its small size, the tongue can guide our lives and either honor God or cause immense damage. The inconsistency of blessing God while cursing others is addressed, urging believers to reflect God's love in their speech. Practical applications include focusing on compassionate, patient, and meek speech, and taking responsibility for our actions rather than blaming others.

Faith Fueled Obedience - Tested Faith - James 2:13-26

In James 2, we delve into the profound relationship between faith and works. The rhetorical question posed in James 2:14 challenges us to reflect on the authenticity of our faith, emphasizing that true faith is evidenced by our actions. Through the examples of Abraham and Rahab, we see that genuine faith is lived out through deeds, demonstrating a natural outflow of their trust in God. As we celebrate the history of Durbin Memorial Baptist Church, we are reminded of the tangible impact of God's grace in our lives and the importance of living out our faith in practical ways. James 2:17 and 2:26 highlight that faith without works is dead, urging us to evaluate our actions and ensure they reflect our faith in Christ. True faith produces compassion and good works, mirroring the grace shown to us at the cross of Jesus Christ. Let us strive to live out our faith in obedience to Christ, reflecting His love and grace in all that we do. Find out more about our church at durbinchurch.org
