    A History of Auschwitz III (1945-present) [patreon preview, P09]

    In this episode, the third special episode we have done on the history of the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, we detail the evolution of the camp(s) from 1945 to the present day. In particular, the episode highlights the issue of public memory, noting the way political and cultural dynamics have effected the design and operation of the state museum. In the immediate aftermath of the war, Polish authorities tended to focus on practical issues, preserving certain sites while repurposing or abandoning others. The guiding principle was the need to remember German crimes against the Polish people to create a stronger sense of Polish national memory. By the start of the Cold War, however, this mindset became outdated, and was eventually replaced by a new Communist emphasis on "antifascism." In the 1990s the complexity of Polish-Jewish relations became more visible, with the building of a Carmelite convent and commemorations of Edith Stein playing a prominent role.     Nazi Society IIb: Strength Through Joy [1_48b]

    In this episode - the second half of a longer lecture, we explore Nazi social programs such as Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude), The Beauty of Labor and The Winter Aid Program, noting the ways in which they contributed to the growing popularity of Hitler's dictatorship in the 1930s. In particular, I argue that these programs led many Germans to feel as if their lives were getting better, as if the Nazi government was "empowering" them, even as it had just stripped away their political and legal rights.     Nazi Society IIa: Volkswagen and Volksgemeinschaft [1.48a]

    When we think about Nazi dictatorship, we usually think about images related to violence, repression and suffering. And for good reason. But is this how many Germans experienced Nazi society? Perhaps surprisingly, the word many Germans might have used is "empowerment," due in large part to Nazi social welfare programs that made ordinary Germans feel like they finally had access to "the good life."  This episode, the first half of a longer lecture, begins by explaining the political value of the Volkswagen or "people's car" to popularizing Hitler's dictatorship.  It also discusses the broader concept of the Volksgemeinschaft or "people's community," the ideological foundation of the regime that enabled it to pursue social welfare while at the same time rejecting similar efforts in democratic and communist societies.  In the end, the episode asks listeners to think about the nature of "freedom," arguing that part of the secret to the Nazis' success was the way they redefined freedom, moving away from the Anglo-American focus on political or legal rights and towards social or cultural freedoms.   Note: the second half of the lecture will be published on Aug 17, 2026.     A History of Auschwitz (1270-1941) [Partial Patreon Preview]

    Auschwitz. The term has become synonymous with the Holocaust as a whole and more broadly, is perhaps the ultimate symbol of evil. Here, over the course of four years, this sleepy Polish town was transformed from an unremarkable place to one of the greatest killing sites in history. As Ellie Wiesel once noted, it became “the largest cemetery in recorded history.” How could such a thing come to pass? This Patreon episode explores the complex historical evolution of Auschwitz-Birkenau, tracing its transformation from a pre-war Polish military barracks into a vast, multi-tiered complex of terror, forced labor, and industrial mass murder. Specifically, we look at several factors that led to its development as the largest concentration camp in the Nazi Empire, including its prewar roots in border population management, Nazi racial fantasies of (re)colonizing the East, the demand for cheap labor and the camp's local geography (which was convenient for the production of bricks and synthetic rubber). We also note how the complex’s genocidal potential evolved over time, starting not with the killing of Jews with Zyklon B, but with the shooting of exhausted Polish prisoners. So join us as we examine the structural history of the camp to better understand how the unthinkable became horrific reality.     Origins of the World Cup [SE_4]

    The World Cup. The showcase moment for the world's most popular sport. You know many of the names: Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe, Pele. But do you know the history behind the world's greatest sporting event? This special episode does a deep dive into the origins of the World Cup, uncovering how this incredible event came to be. As we'll see, the journey was neither straightforward nor easy. First, "soccer" or "football" had to be invented and standardized. Technological and economic conditions had to develop to support fandom, and international play. And men like Jules Rimet, Hector Gomez and Hugo Meisl had to put it all together. The episode walks the listener through the history of the origins of the cup, noting the role played by the English-Scottish rivalry and the development of the Olympics in the process.  It ends with a summary of the 1930 Cup, won by a plucky Uruguayan side over their Argentine arch-rivals 4-2.     Nazi Society I: the War for Work [1_47]

    By the summer of 1933, Hitler had established a totalitarian dictatorship in Germany. He was, in Machiavelli's famous phrasing, "feared." But he also wanted to be "loved." This is the first of three episodes exploring how the Nazis popularized dictatorship in the mid-1930s, focusing on the issue of economic recovery. After more than three years of economic hardship (1929-1933), the Nazis helped two million people find work within a year of coming to power, and they took the German economy to full employment by the end of 1936.     The Nazi Revolution V: Night of the Long Knives [1_46]

    By the summer of 1934, the Nazi Dictatorship was well established. Yet Hitler's control over Germany was not completely secure, due in part to rivalries between the boisterous SA and the German army. To cement his absolute control over German society, he needed to bring both to heel. This episode explores the "Night of the Long Knives," Hitler's bloody purge of the Nazi Party that took place in June 1934. It explores the positions of the three main actors in the drama - the SA, the Army and the SS, showing how their separate interests led to directly to the conflict. It also reflects on the meaning and consequences of this action, which cemented Hitler's absolute control over not only the German state and the Nazi Party, but also importantly the German Army.     The Nazi Revolution in a Small German Town [Partial Patreon Preview]

    So far our podcast had provided a broad overview of the Nazi seizure of power. In today's episode, we look more closely at what this experience was like at the local level, focusing on the small German town of Northeim, an idyllic city of 10,000 people located in central Germany. Here, the Nazis grew from an otherwise unremarkable splinter party in 1928 to producing clear electoral majorities by 1932. The episode examines the secrets to the Nazis' meteoric rise at the local level, as well as the failures of the other local parties and institutions to respond to them (again with a focus of local events). Note: 1) there is a second Patreon-only episode detailing events after 1933, covering the transition to the Nazi dictatorship. 2) The episode draws heavily from William Sheridan Allen's The Nazi Seizure of Power: the Experience of a Single German Town, 1922-1945, which I highly recommend reading.
