Juniata River Smallmouth Fishing Report: 94.50” Kayak Tournament Win with Jordan Lovejoy

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we head back to Pennsylvania to break down the Juniata River smallmouth bass bite with Jordan Lovejoy, winner of the Kayak Adventure Series Juniata River event with an impressive 94.50 inches. Jordan shares how he unlocked a powerful post-spawn smallmouth bass pattern, why the Juniata River is one of the most underrated smallmouth rivers in the country, and how kayak anglers can find overlooked fish in current, shoals, isolated rock, and mid-river structure. We dive deep into Juniata River fishing, Susquehanna River smallmouth behavior, kayak bass fishing strategy, and the key differences between fishing the Juniata River, Upper Potomac River, New River, Shenandoah River, Holston River, and Susquehanna River. Jordan explains how he targeted post-spawn smallmouth with a chatterbait, why subtle bait action mattered, how fish were positioning around rock and current seams, and why many anglers overlook the best water by focusing only on the bank. This episode is loaded with river smallmouth fishing knowledge, including how to fish current, how to locate big smallmouth bass after the spawn, how to break down shallow rocky rivers, how to approach kayak fishing tournaments, and why the Juniata River Valley deserves more attention on the national bass fishing stage. Paper Mill Pollution on the Jackson River? What’s Happening to the Upper James River

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we sit down with Capt. Sam Scott of Blue Ridge Muskies to discuss a serious and growing concern on the Jackson River and Upper James River: pollution concerns connected to the Smurfit Westrock paper mill in Covington, Virginia. Sam breaks down what he has seen firsthand on his home waters, including dramatic water discoloration, sludge-like buildup on the river bottom, major dark-water events, poor fishing conditions after discharge events, and concerns over dissolved oxygen, water temperature, aquatic vegetation, spawning success, and the long-term health of the James River muskie and smallmouth bass fisheries. We also discuss why this issue matters beyond fishing. The Jackson River feeds the Upper James, one of Virginia’s most important recreational river systems for anglers, guides, kayakers, tubers, and outdoor tourism. Sam explains why he believes more transparency, public awareness, and expanded water testing are urgently needed — including testing for more than just dissolved oxygen. This conversation also touches on a national report that identified the Covington Smurfit Westrock facility as one of the most concerning paper mills in the country for pollution, emissions, odor complaints, and its impact on the Jackson River. This is an important developing story for anyone who cares about Virginia rivers, the Upper James fishery, muskie fishing, smallmouth bass, clean water, and the future of outdoor recreation in the Mid-Atlantic. Potomac River Bass Fishing Report: Summer Bass Secrets with Captain Steve Chaconas

In this episode of Fishing the DMV, we head back to the legendary Potomac River with one of the most knowledgeable anglers to ever fish it Captain Steve Chaconas. Captain Steve breaks down the current state of the Potomac River bass fishery, including how the river is really fishing, why submerged aquatic vegetation like milfoil and SAV is so important, and how the loss of grass has changed the way anglers need to approach the river. We also discuss fishing pressure, tournament pressure, changing fish behavior, and why the Potomac may not be “dead” — but it is absolutely different. Steve also gives an incredible breakdown of how to catch Potomac River bass right now, including his favorite summer techniques: chatterbaits, swim jigs, frogs, punching mats, Texas-rigged Senkos, spinnerbaits, docks, pads, hard cover, and old-school Carolina rigs. He also shares one of his secret topwater baits — the Hub’s Chub — and explains why it can trigger pressured bass and snakeheads when other baits won’t. We also dive into underrated northern Potomac and DC-area bass fishing spots, including Piscataway, Dike Marsh, Spoils, Broad Creek, Belle Haven, Jones Point, Four Mile Run, Washington Channel, Pentagon Lagoon, Roosevelt Island, and the Anacostia. Summer Striper and Bass Fishing Topwater Patterns | Kerr Lake Fishing Report

In this episode of Fishing the DMV, we head back to Buggs Island Reservoir, also known as Kerr Lake, for a full summer fishing report with Captain Zach from Threadfin Guide Services. If you are looking for the latest information on Buggs Island fishing, Kerr Lake fishing, Kerr Lake striper fishing, Buggs Island striped bass, Kerr Lake bass fishing, and summer patterns across the Virginia and North Carolina border, this episode is packed with valuable fishing insight. Captain Zach breaks down what is happening right now on Kerr Lake as the lake moves into its summer fishing patterns. We talk about current water conditions, water clarity, water temperature, lake levels, and how those factors are impacting the bite for striped bass, spotted bass, largemouth bass, walleye, white bass, and other species on Buggs Island. A major focus of this episode is Kerr Lake striper fishing and Buggs Island striped bass fishing. Zach explains how the shad spawn and herring spawn transition into the early summer striper pattern, why the fish are moving from nighttime topwater feeding into deeper schools, and how anglers can target them with deep water jigging, slab spoons, offshore-style jigs, braid-to-fluorocarbon setups, and vertical presentations. We discuss how stripers are being found in deep water, why staying directly over the school matters, and how fish can move quickly when feeding on bait. We also get into topwater striper fishing on Buggs Island and Kerr Lake, including the nighttime bite during the shad and herring spawn, fishing Cotton Cordell RedFins, and why calm, dark nights can create some of the best striper action of the year. Zach also previews the late summer and early fall topwater striper bite, when giant schools of striped bass can erupt on the surface and create some of the most exciting fishing anywhere in Virginia or North Carolina. This episode is not just about striper fishing. We also dive deep into Kerr Lake bass fishing, including summer bass fishing, spotted bass fishing, and largemouth bass fishing patterns. Zach explains how anglers can still catch bass shallow during the summer, especially around rock piles, brush piles, bluegill beds, willows, points, and baitfish activity. We talk about topwater bass fishing, big worm fishing, shallow rock piles, clear water sight-fishing opportunities, and why hot weather can be a great time to throw oversized soft plastics for largemouth bass. For anglers interested in spotted bass fishing, Zach breaks down why Buggs Island has become such an exciting spotted bass fishery. We discuss shallow topwater bites, offshore schools, points, deep water structure, and the possibility of truly giant spotted bass living in Kerr Lake. We also talk about how spotted bass, largemouth bass, and striped bass can all relate to blueback herring, threadfin shad, rock, brush, and offshore structure during the summer. Captain Zach also shares his thoughts on the changing fish populations in Buggs Island Reservoir, including the decline of white bass fishing, the increase in walleye catches, and what he is seeing while guiding across the lake. We discuss Kerr Lake walleye, white bass, catfish, carp, fly fishing opportunities, and how Threadfin Guide Services targets multiple species throughout the year across Virginia fishing and North Carolina fishing destinations. If you fish Buggs Island, Kerr Lake, Lake Gaston, southern Virginia, northern North Carolina, or any large reservoir with striped bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, herring, shad, and offshore structure, this episode will help you better understand summer fishing patterns and how to adjust your approach. Virginia’s New Gun Laws Explained!!!! How Hunters, Anglers and outdoor lovers will be Impacted

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, we sit down with Hunter Brooks and Todd Sadler from Green Top to break down the new Virginia gun laws, the upcoming Virginia assault weapons ban, magazine capacity limits, firearm transfer deadlines, and the civil liability concerns facing gun shops, firearm manufacturers, and outdoor retailers. This conversation goes far beyond politics. It affects Virginia hunting, fishing, conservation, gun ownership, outdoor recreation, local tackle shops, archery, firearm sales, and the future of the outdoor community across the Mid-Atlantic. If you are a hunter, angler, firearm owner, sportsman, conservation supporter, or someone who shops at Green Top, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, local gun shops, or outdoor stores in Virginia, this is an episode you need to hear. We cover the biggest questions people are asking right now: What does the Virginia assault weapons ban actually mean?  What firearms are affected after July 1?  Can you still own firearms purchased before the law takes effect?  What happens if you order a firearm before July 1 but do not take possession in time?  How do the magazine capacity limits affect rifles, handguns, AR-15s, AR pistols, rimfire rifles, tactical shotguns, and turkey hunting shotguns?  How could this impact deer hunting, turkey hunting, waterfowl hunting, recreational shooting, and outdoor tourism in Virginia?  What does the civil liability law mean for Green Top, local gun stores, firearm manufacturers, and outdoor businesses? Hunter and Todd also explain what customers are most confused about, how Green Top is preparing for these changes, and why many Virginia firearm owners still do not realize how close these changes are. We also talk about the future of Green Top, the strength of the Virginias outdoors communities, and why hunters and anglers need to stay informed, stay involved, and understand how legislation can impact the outdoor lifestyle. This is one of the most important outdoor conversations happening in Virginia right now.
