Students returned semester after semester because Rothbard varied the content each time. Rothbard became French’s thesis advisor for a project on financial bubbles, proving an exceptional mentor who supplied exhaustive bibliographies, writing guidance (recommending H.L. Mencken for style), and personal encouragement. French recounts Rothbard’s humility (“Well, in my view…”), his deep knowledge, and his resilience amid university bureaucracy, including a dismissive department chair evaluation that Rothbard rebutted forcefully. Even after graduation, Rothbard continued offering support and advice. French portrays him as a dedicated teacher, scholar, and inspiration who profoundly shaped those around him. In closing, French calls on the audience to advance Rothbard’s vision of free markets and Austrian economics. True progress comes not from government intervention or billionaire philanthropy (which he critiques as often misguided), but from unfettered capitalism that empowers entrepreneurs like Carrier and Yanke.
