    168: It is Sin that kills, not the law

    It is sin that kills, not the law. Opening Romans 7:7, Father Genard Lazar stands with Paul: Is the law sin? Far be it. The commandment does not produce evil — it makes sin known. What you did not recognize, the law names; and once named, you are accountable.A dumbbell is not bad because weak arms cannot lift it. The law had power to strengthen; man was weak in the flesh. Christ alone had the holiness to fulfill it. Paul points not to murder or adultery — outward acts — but to coveting, the hidden passion of the heart. The law exposes not only what we do, but the desires within.Without the law, sin was dead. When the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died — Eden again. God said, Do not eat, for life, not to kill. He did not say, I will kill you. When you disobey, you separate yourself from the source of life. You are dead. Admission and confession are not enough. Pray for repentance. Come back. Eat His Body and drink His Blood.     Episode 167: Death has put asunder

    Death puts asunder. A wife is bound while her husband lives — but if he dies, she is free. Finishing Romans 6 and opening Romans 7, Father Genard Lazar drives home Paul’s hard edge: the wages of sin is death you earn; eternal life is a gift you cannot merit — and it comes only through Jesus Christ our Lord.You cannot serve sin and praise God. Oil and water do not mix. When we chose immorality and the world’s patterns, we were free from righteousness — free from obedience to God. Baptism put us to death with Christ. We became Christians at the font, not by reading Scripture alone. Now we are called to be slaves to holiness, bearing fruit whose end is eternal life. “Once saved, always saved” collapses under Paul: we died to the law by the body of Christ so we might belong to Him who rose — and bring forth fruit unto God.Be holy, for the Lord your God is holy. From Adam’s side came Eve; from the pierced side of the second Adam come blood and water — and we are His bride. If the shoe fits, wear it. Repent.     Episode 166: Being Speechless before the Righteous Judge

    A fifth amendment may help in an earthly court, but not before Christ the righteous Judge. In this episode Father Genard Lazar opens the parable of the wedding banquet in Matthew 22: the invitation is our present life, the wedding hall is the Church, and the King will examine every guest at the final judgment. Merely coming to church — even being baptized — does not mean the verdict is already in our favor. The man without a wedding garment was speechless. There is no counsel, no village patron, and no excuse that will stand. Drawing on St. John Chrysostom and the teaching of the Church, this episode calls us to wake up, repent (not merely admit), and put on the garment of virtue before that day.     Episode 165: Grace is not a license to Sin

    Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? Far be it. Continuing Romans 6, Father Genard Lazar teaches that dying with Christ in baptism does not mean we will never be tempted — only that we must not continue to live in sin. Grace is the strength to get up, confess, and repent. It is not an excuse, a license, or a justification to remain in uncleanness. “Once saved, always saved” is heresy; to preach it is to pervert the grace of God (Jude 1). There are two masters. Yield yourself to sin and the wage is death — distance from the life of God now, and eternal separation if we remain there. Yield yourself to righteousness and walk in the apostolic teaching (Acts 2:42): prayer, the Eucharist, and the liturgy of the Church. Mar Isho'dad writes that in baptism the dominion of sin is broken: freedom from sin is not freedom to sin, but freedom to serve righteously. Your members are instruments. They belong to God. Use them for holiness.
