819 News is launching the Make Alabama Healthy initiative, and this episode makes the case for why. This initiative has two halves. One is investigative, covering reimbursement rates, hospital funding, and the staffing of Alabama's residency programs. Reporter Daniel Taylor is now dedicated to the beat full time, and the first numbers are already published, showing huge percentages of international medical graduates practicing at Baptist Health, Flowers Hospital in Dothan, UAB, and North Alabama Medical Center in Florence. These last ones are not rural hospitals, which makes this a pattern rather than just a shortage story. The other half of this initiative is personal responsibility, and Bryan Dawson starts with himself. He was 205 pounds and running four miles a day during his prison years. He came home, discovered processed food, and reached 317 pounds. Today, he is 261 pounds and walks three miles a day starting at 4:30 a.m. Dawson also tells the story of his mother's heart attack, the ambulance that took 45 minutes because a dispatcher did not understand the word cardiovascular, and the ICU team he credits with saving her life. Plus a preview of next week's guest, D. Michael Clary, author of "Loser Theology: Why the Weak Will Not Inherit the Earth."
