Alex Hughes: From Calgary to LA to Nashville and Back Home

Send us Fan Mail Alex Hughes is a born-and-raised Calgary artist who has been performing since she was seven years old. She went from opening for her cousins' band at family gatherings, to chasing her career in LA and Nashville, to landing back home and making the music she always wanted to make. Her debut EP Take Me Home is out now. It's been a long time coming. We talked about growing up performing through the Calgary Stampede talent search, what it was like to move to LA at twenty and work with Grammy Award-winning producer Walter Athanasiev, the difference between LA's image-first culture and Nashville's story-first mentality, why coming back to Canada felt scary at first and then felt like exactly the right move, the song that sparked the whole project ("Until This Fire Dies"), and why "Slow Dancing in the Kitchen" almost didn't make the EP, and why she couldn't put it out without it. Also: she once drove around Alberta in a truck with her face on it. We definitely got into that. Alex is playing the Coke Stage at the Calgary Stampede this summer, along with Peach Fest in Penticton and Feast on the Beach in Cold Lake. And yes, vinyl is on the way. Rosewood Ave: They Met on MSN. Now They're on the Radio

Send us Fan Mail Sabrina and Dave of Rosewood Avenue are a husband and wife country duo from Northern Ontario. And when they say Northern Ontario, they mean it.  Think past Muskoka ... past Sudbury ... and keep going. They're near Timmins, home of Shania Twain, in a small town called Matheson. They've been making music together for 17 years, but it's only been the last five or six that they've been pushing it on a professional level. Sabrina spent nine years teaching music before making the leap.  Dave's always had music in his blood, with a cousin who plays lead guitar for Johnny Reid. Together, they've built something that sounds like Northern Ontario feels: honest, warm, and rooted. The band name? A little bit of a love story.  Sabrina's maiden name, Charleboix, has "bois" in it, which means wood in French. Dave always bought her roses. And Devonshire Avenue is the street where they first met as neighbours, connected by a very 2000s introduction through MSN Messenger. We talked about how they balance being a couple, co-writers, and business partners, what it was like for Dave to go from strictly guitar player to vocalist, why they haven't left their small town and don't plan to anytime soon, the Ontario country community and what it's meant to their career, and the emotional experience of hearing "Leavin' Town" on the radio for the first time. Rosewood Avenue's current single "Leavin' Town" is at Canadian country radio now, sitting in the top 50 and climbing.  We're so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music. [SPECIAL EPISODE] mastered. The Business Of Music Episode 3: Playing LASSO Festival and Getting Booked

Send us Fan Mail Hey everyone! This week, we're doing something a little different. Instead of our regular On The Porch episode, we're bringing you a full episode of our limited series, mastered. The Business of Music. mastered. pulls back the curtain on the music industry, with real conversations about labels, touring, booking, and what it actually takes to build a career as an artist. It's all about giving you practical, real-world advice from people working in the business every day. We're excited to share this episode with you, and don't worry. We'll be back with our regular On The Porch format next week. You can also head over to the mastered. feed to catch the rest of the series. Patrick Guay is a booker and promoter based in Montreal who works with Evenko, one of Canada's leading live entertainment companies. He's behind some of the biggest festivals in the country, including Lasso, Osheaga, and Ilesoniq, as well as roughly 1,600 shows a year across arenas and clubs throughout Quebec and Atlantic Canada. In this episode, Patrick and Jenna dig into what it actually takes to get booked on a major festival stage and why most artists aren't thinking about it the right way. They talk about how bookers evaluate artists, why ticket sales matter more than social media numbers, the importance of building your market from the ground up, and what a realistic path to a big stage actually looks like. Patrick also shares how he got his start in the industry, what he looks for when an artist pitches him, and why relationships and reputation go a long way in a music scene as small as Canada's. If you've ever wondered how to get on a festival lineup, or whether you're actually ready, this one is a must-listen. Owen Riegling: Celebrating Episode 100, “In The Feeling”, an Opry Debut and more

Send us Fan Mail From the voice that brought you the On The Porch theme song, is our 100th episode with Owen Riegling.  If you have been listening since the early days, we did proclaim our 100th episode would be with Shania Twain, we even called it the "Road to Shania". Somewhere along the way we got distracted by all of the incredibly talented artists across Canada. We're thrilled to be celebrating our 100th episode with Owen. He has a lot to show for the last four years. From recording in his parents' driving shed with a handful of self-produced songs out - to a record deal, publishing deal, years of touring under his belt, multiple CCMA Awards and two albums. I'm sure I missed something. Oh yes - he made his Grand Ole Opry debut April 22nd. We caught up on all the crazy that has been Owen's life the last few years.  We've got Owen slotted for episode 200, in real life, on a front porch, with a bottle of whiskey. Brettyn Rose: Read, Sing, Sleep, Repeat

Send us Fan Mail Brettyn Rose grew up in Okotoks, Alberta. A very small town girl who enjoys the quiet, she now calls High River home. Just close enough to get to Calgary for gigs, but far enough away from the city to enjoy peace, quiet, and no traffic. Finding out pretty early that sports weren't for her, but music was, Brettyn started her music journey sitting at the piano. She began singing, and eventually picked up guitar. Brettyn released her first single in 2019 and has been an emerging independent artist since, slowly building, releasing singles, and playing live shows. Brettyn is also a 2025 SiriusXM Top of the Country alumni. Brettyn was nominated Horizon Female Artist and Songwriter of the Year (Wild West), at the Country Music Alberta Awards this year.  We talked about her education, and how it lends itself to music, some of her bucket list items as an artist, West Coast festivals that she's played and would love to play, and more. Braden Lam: The Blue Collar Songwriter

Send us Fan Mail This week, Jenna sat down with Braden Lam for coffee and a conversation about his career in music. Braden grew up in Uxbridge, Ontario, but has called Halifax home for a decade. He headed East to go to school for Biology & Environmental Science at Dalhousie. He immersed himself in the Halifax and East Coast music scene, and has enjoyed living next to the Atlantic ever since. Braden was first introduced to our radars when he was a semifinalist in SiriusXM's Top of the Country contest but has been cutting his teeth since his university years. RELATED: Braden Lam is a Front Porch Artist to Watch in 2026... We talked a lot about his debut album The Cloudmaker's Cry, which is a nod to the difficulty of navigating early adulthood. We also talked about the side quest business he and his wife started during the pandemic (listen to find out).  We talked about Folk as a genre and finding his sound through some of the late 2000s, early 2010s folk music. His sound balances these influences with some contemporary country. Braden's exciting announcement recently was his signing of a major record deal with Universal Music Cananda! He's excited to be working with a large team and working on his next album. Braden is currently on tour with School House for the Freewheelin' Field Trip tour for March. - We’re so excited to welcome you back for Season 5 of On The Porch with Front Porch  Music.  If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, and subscribe … it’s one of the easiest ways to support the show and helps more listeners find us.
