Windrush Podcast - Being Black In Luton - Guests - Jadean Taylor, Janet Skepple , Margaret Matthews) Recording & Editing By The Skill Lab.mp3

Guests:   Jadean Taylor: 3rd generation Windrush currently living in Malta. Jadean is one of the creative directors of a project called 75RUSH. 75RUSH will be a snapshot of the Windrush generation 75 years beyond settling in Luton and the impact of their migration on the current generation. We are focusing on how the movement shaped our morals and values, societal positions and how we continue to navigate with the duality of both Caribbean and British culture. Accompanied by a significant look into the evolving perspective of Luton, which became the first and only home to many Caribbean people. Ultimately, the film will provide a positive outlook on the impacts of the Windrush movement in Luton and display the beauty, art, teachings and excellence our grandparents carried over.   Janet Skepple: 2nd generation Windrush. Involved in Carnival since 1984 and founder of Scandalous Mas Band in 2013; Luton’s only child dedicated carnival band. Janet created a scale replica of the Empire Windrush ship and performed in the ship costume in Luton Carnival 2023. The costume will feature as part of an exhibition in Septemberhttps://www.culturetrust.com/whats-on/all-aboard-exhibition   Margaret Matthews (Aunty Margaret): 1st generation Windrush who brought the Caribbean flavour to Luton International Carnival. Margaret has donated a ‘banana doll’ to Deborah Knight’s curated exhibition at Wardown House entitled ‘I am Home’ about the Windrush Generation specifically within Luton that opens soon.   Recording and Editing of Podcast: The Skill Lab: A project inspired by the disconnect between the current youth services available to help target child criminal exploitation and deprivation within the community with the hope that skill lab can be the intervention to make a difference in breaking the cycle. The Skill Lab team aim to raise aspirations of the young people, set and meet achievable goals and encourage them to make better decisions and life choices. (https://theskilllab.co.uk/)
