  1. Why One Career Hit Can Feel Like Everything Is Gone

Why One Career Hit Can Feel Like Everything Is Gone

Imagine a roof held up by a single column. On a calm day, it looks completely fine. But you and I both know it's one bad weather day away from coming down. For a lot of high-functioning people, that single column is their career. And when work takes a hit, it doesn't feel like a setback in one area of life. It feels like the whole structure is going down at once. In this episode, Bernie unpacks why that happens and what you can actually do about it today. Who This Is For This episode is for you if you've recently lost your job and can't understand why it feels so much bigger than a career setback. It's also for you if your career looks fine on the outside but something feels quietly off on the inside. If you've ever poured everything into your work and wondered where everything else went, this one is going to land. Key Takeaways The one-column life is a structural problem, not a personal failure. The five life pillars are load-bearing. Focus has a cost. Building the other supports is not a reward for later. This is leverage, not motivation. Summary This is episode two of a four-part series on self-leadership. Bernie Borges makes the case that career disruption hits as hard as it does because most high achievers have built their entire life on a single support. Using the metaphor of a roof held up by one column, he walks through the five life pillars — Health, Fitness, Career, Relationships, and Legacy — and explains why distributing the weight of your life across all five isn't a feel-good idea. It's a real move you can make today, without anyone's permission and without a single callback. At the end of the series, Bernie will share a free tool: the 90-Day Self Leadership Blueprint. 2. The One Thing You Can Control When the Job Search Makes You Question Everything

    Jun 15

The One Thing You Can Control When the Job Search Makes You Question Everything

You sent the resume. It was a perfect fit, not a stretch. You tailored it, read it twice, hit submit, and heard nothing. Not even a polite rejection. Just silence. And somewhere around the fifteenth time that happened, a thought crept in that you never used to have: what if everything I know how to do doesn't count anymore? If that's where you are right now, this episode is for you. Who This Is For This episode is for experienced professionals who are doing everything right and getting shut out anyway. If the job search has stopped feeling like a process and started feeling like a verdict on your worth, stay with this one. It's also for anyone who has quietly started to wonder how much of their identity got handed over to their work without them ever noticing. Five Key Takeaways 1. The system changed, and it's not a reflection of your value. AI screening filters are eliminating qualified candidates before a single human sees their application. What's happening to you is not a verdict on your experience or your worth. It's a market that got strange fast in ways nobody prepared us for. 2. Doing more of what used to work is not the answer. The instinct to send more resumes, hustle harder, and network more is understandable. But when the old playbook stops landing, grinding harder inside a broken system only accelerates exhaustion. Something else is needed. 3. There is a category of this situation that is still completely yours. You can't control the screening technology, the hiring freeze, or whether a hiring manager ever sees your resume. But how you talk to yourself at the end of a silent day, whether you let an algorithm's silence become the story you believe about your value, that's yours. That's where self leadership begins. 4. Your work became your identity so gradually you never noticed. For most people, career scaffolding, the title, the badge, the paycheck, quietly became the foundation of who they are. That works until it doesn't. When the scaffolding gets pulled away, it's not just an income loss. It's an identity crisis. Naming that honestly is the first step toward something more stable. 5. AI can automate tasks but it cannot lead the person you are. Judgment, discernment, critical thinking, relationship building, the deeply human capacity to stay grounded in uncertainty. These are not becoming less valuable. They are becoming the whole game. The least automatable part of you is also the part most worth developing right now. Main Takeaway You can't control whether they call you back. But you can control who's standing there when they do or when they don't. This episode is the first in a four-part series on how to lead yourself when you can't lead the circumstances. The work starts here, and no callback is required to begin. 3. Legacy Is Something You Live, Not Something You Leave

Legacy Is Something You Live, Not Something You Leave

What if the most important investment you'll ever make isn't in a stock, a startup, or even in yourself but in someone else? Mike Emoff is the Chief Vision Officer at Boost Engagement, and has spent more than four decades proving that giving back isn't a retirement plan or a strategy. It's simply who he is. From baking cookies for Vietnam vets alongside his mom at age 10, to walking into a stranger's office and asking, "Can you mentor me?", to mentoring marketing students at Wright State University for decades, Mike has built a life organized around generosity and a conviction that legacy isn't something you leave behind someday. It's something you live right now. In this episode, Bernie and Mike explore: How a childhood lesson in giving became the foundation for a 46-year career, and why it's never too early or too late to start Why delivering great service is itself a form of giving and what it means to be "outcome-driven" in business and in life The impromptu strategy that earned Mike a client for life, and how mentorship "worked like magic" early in his career What it means to be a "coveted mentor" giving 100% rather than treating mentorship as a box to check The story behind The Money Will Follow, the Wall Street Journal #2 bestseller Mike co-authored with his 11-year-old son Adam, and the karma-driven philosophy at its heart Lessons from 20+ years of board service, including 17 years chairing the Dayton Air Show and the moment a grieving widow taught him what empathy really looks like Why Mike went back to school for a Harvard course on strategic disruption, and how he's leading his team to adopt AI at "the front edge, not the bleeding edge" How to think about succession and passing the baton while you're still here to see the impact Who this is for: Leaders, mentors, and business owners thinking about what outlasts a single career or achievement. Anyone who senses that real fulfillment comes from investing in people, not just outcomes. Main takeaway: You get far more back than you give. Legacy isn't a monument you build for later; it's the daily practice of giving your time, your wisdom, and your attention to the people coming up behind you and meaning it. 4. Sell Everything, Gain Everything: One Couple's Blueprint for a Life Fulfilled

    Jun 1

Sell Everything, Gain Everything: One Couple's Blueprint for a Life Fulfilled

Jessica Carroll shares how she and her husband sold nearly everything they owned to spend years living as nomads across four continents — three months at a time.  Jessica is a seasoned executive in customer and employee engagement and Head of Strategic Alliances at the Institute for Digital Transformation. Jessica discovered that fulfillment isn't found in the life you accumulate. It's found in the one you intentionally build. Two losses at age 50 — a father-in-law, then a brother — didn't just change how Jessica thought about life. They changed how she and her husband designed it. This episode is for anyone who has ever looked at their comfortable, successful life and quietly wondered, is this it? If you've had a moment, whether it was a loss, a milestone, a mirror in a Cape Town apartment that made you rethink what the next chapter should actually look like, Jessica's story will meet you there. You don't have to sell everything to live intentionally. But you might need to be willing to. 5 Key Points Discussed: Grief as Catalyst: Two sudden family deaths at age 50 planted a seed that took decades to grow and ultimately became the emotional fuel behind one of the most deliberate life redesigns you'll hear on this podcast. Jessica and her husband didn't react impulsively; they channeled loss into long-range planning. The Spreadsheet Moment: Jessica's husband won her over not with grand gestures, but with her own love language, a detailed spreadsheet mapping five years of nomadic travel, validated by a financial advisor. It's a masterclass in knowing your partner and designing a shared future together. Fitness Found Her: Jessica never considered herself a gym person. Then she looked in the mirror in Cape Town and made a decision. What followed wasn't just a physical transformation. It was the discovery that daily exercise was the structure her disrupted nomadic life needed, quietly managing anxiety and sharpening her mind across 10+ countries. Work Without Walls: Jessica stepped away from full-time work in 2024 but hasn't stepped away from impact. She consults with companies on digital transformation and AI readiness, runs workshops with CIOs and their teams, and manages it all across multiple time zones, including a midnight program she delivered while living in Thailand, 12 hours ahead of her US clients. The Human Thread: Across Spain, Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, Italy, the UK, Thailand, and France, Jessica discovered something that delighted her. People everywhere are more alike than different. When you stay somewhere long enough to shop at the same market and recognize the same faces, real relationships form. The nomadic life didn't shrink her world of connection; it expanded it. Main Takeaway: You don't stumble into a fulfilling life. You plan it, fund it, and choose it even when the emotions are complicated. Jessica Carroll's story is proof that with intention, and a willingness to get comfortable being uncomfortable, your most fulfilling life chapter may be the one that looks nothing like what you expected. 5. How Leaders Can Redesign Work for AI: The Human Dividend

    May 25

How Leaders Can Redesign Work for AI: The Human Dividend

In this episode, I introduce the Human Dividend: the leadership opportunity that opens up when AI removes repetitive, draining work and creates space for the work only humans can do; judgment, creativity, relationships, meaning-making, and contribution. This episode picks up where the AI Trust Audit left off. Once your team has told you what drains them, what makes them feel human, and what they would do with more capacity, the next leadership move is to do something meaningful with that information. Because if AI simply helps an already stretched team do more work faster, you have not solved the problem. You have accelerated it. The Human Dividend is what happens when leaders intentionally redesign work after AI, not merely around productivity, but around fulfillment and impact. It requires leaders to move beyond implementation plans and vendor demos and into three essential conversations: the energy audit, the contribution conversation, and the future role conversation. These conversations help your people see that AI is not just changing their workflow. It is creating an opportunity to elevate the human value they bring to the organization. 5 Key Takeaways: Efficiency Without Purpose Is Just Speed The Human Dividend Must Be Designed The Energy Audit Reveals What AI Should Actually Improve Contribution Is Bigger Than Task Completion Future Roles Should Be Co-Designed, Not Announced Main takeaway:AI will do what you ask of it. The question is whether you are asking the right thing. If you use AI only to do more of the same, you will get more of the same, just faster. But if you use AI to redesign the conditions under which your people work, you can free them to do the work that actually fulfills them while still moving the needle on business results. That is the Human Dividend. It is the difference between an AI transformation and a leadership transformation, and the leader is the deciding variable. 6. The AI Trust Audit: 5 Questions Every Leader Must Ask

    May 18

The AI Trust Audit: 5 Questions Every Leader Must Ask

Most leaders treat AI transformation like a software update. They send an email, hold a town hall, then wonder why their best people are quietly quitting or openly pushing back. The real issue isn't the technology. It's the uncertainty. It's a lack of trust. In this episode, I introduce the AI Trust Audit: five specific questions you can ask your team right now to uncover the fears they're not telling you, and how to pivot that anxiety into genuine engagement. This episode is for leaders at every level who are navigating AI rollouts and sensing something is off, not with the technology, but with the people. 5 Key Takeaways: The Fear Tax Is Real: AI initiatives stall not because of poor technology or even poor communication, but because of unaddressed fear. When employees distrust the intent behind a rollout, that distrust becomes an invisible drag on performance — one that compounds quietly until it's visible in attrition, disengagement, and resistance. Building trust before the rollout begins is not a soft priority. It's a strategic one. The Relief Question Reframes the Narrative: Asking your team what draining work they wish a machine could handle repositions AI as an ally before the rollout even begins. It signals that you're thinking about making their work better, not just faster — and in the context of AI transformation, that reframe is everything. Protect What Makes People Feel Human: The identity question — "What part of your work makes you feel the most human?" — isn't soft. It's strategic. If you don't know what work fulfills each person on your team, you cannot design an AI integration that retains them. Fulfillment-centric leadership means building the rollout around what matters to people, not just what's efficient. Name the Rumors Out Loud: The transparency question takes courage to ask, but whatever your team is whispering in the hallways is already shaping their engagement with the rollout. Naming the rumors removes their power. In an AI transformation, radical transparency is the most direct antidote to the fear tax. Make Your Team Co-Architects, Not Recipients: The capacity and trust questions shift your team's orientation from "what am I losing?" to "what becomes possible?" When employees feel their input genuinely matters in shaping how AI is integrated into their roles, they advocate instead of resist. The trust score — a simple 1–10 — is a hard truth metric. A lot of sixes or below isn't failure. It's data that tells you exactly where to focus your communication and relationship building before and during the rollout. Main takeaway: Your team is probably not afraid of AI. They may be afraid that the people leading them care more about the mandate to use AI than they care about them. The AI Trust Audit isn't a one-time survey. It's the beginning of an ongoing trust conversation and a signal to your team that you see them, you're thinking about how this transition affects their work and their identity, and you're not going to roll out AI and leave them to figure it out alone. That's what fulfilled leadership looks like in the age of AI. Bernie Borges, offers a complimentary strategy session. 7. The Free Thinking Discipline That Separates Good Leaders From Great Ones

The Free Thinking Discipline That Separates Good Leaders From Great Ones

This week, Gavin Finn, tech CEO, leadership thinker, and self-knowledge enthusiast joins Bernie for a thought-provoking conversation about the discipline of free-thinking in leadership and in life. We’re living in a world that throws beliefs, identities, and opinions our way every day. But are the things you believe really your values? And are you thinking for yourself, or just echoing someone else’s beliefs? This is a power-packed conversation about authentic identity, free thinking, and how to lead with purpose. Watch the Life Fulfilled podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@lifefulfilledpod The Crucial Difference Between Values and BeliefsDiscover why separating what you truly care about from what you think is true can change everything. How to Identify Your Own ValuesGavin shares practical ways to dig down to what you really care about instead of adopting beliefs by “osmosis” from others. Permission (And Discipline!) to Think for YourselfChallenge the idea that you “shouldn’t” question what you’ve been taught by being a free thinker. It is more than a right, it’s a responsibility and a discipline. How Leaders Build Teams Based on Shared ValuesReal-world examples (including the Volkswagen scandal) show how company values live or die, not by the posters in the hallway, but by daily actions. Why Meaningful Work and Fulfillment Are Grounded in AuthenticityUnderstand how finding purpose and meaning—no matter the task—comes from living in line with your values. Main Takeaway Separating your core values from your beliefs while regularly questioning and validating both through honest self-reflection, is essential for personal fulfillment, growth, and effective leadership. Owning your identity by being true to your values, while continuously reevaluating beliefs, fosters authentic connections and a culture of disciplined free thinking at both individual and organizational levels. The Unfair Advantage Most Leaders Ignore | Jourdan Hathaway

Jourdan Hathaway grew up in a childhood of extreme poverty. Today she is the Chief Business Officer at General Assembly, a global ed-tech company. On this episode, Jourdan shares a transparent and uplifting blueprint of how the things that could've held her back became her unfair advantage in all aspects of life, including but not limited to her career. Watch the Life Fulfilled podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@lifefulfilledpod The Hidden Power of Adversity:Why the struggles you have endured and overcome can become your greatest unfair advantage. The Figureoutable Mindset:The creative ways Jourdan found to access education and opportunities that seemed out of reach in her youth. Decoupling Fulfillment from Achievement:How Jourdan learned after chasing milestone after milestone that true satisfaction comes from something deeper than just ticking off goals accomplished. Legacy Starts Now:Why your impact isn’t only about how you’ll be remembered, but about the way you show up for others every single day. Jourdan credits her passion for marketing and human connection to the TV show Bewitched.  She actually thought being an “ad man” would guarantee her a safe, happy family life filled with the trappings of a nice home, car, and wardrobe! Sometimes, inspiration really does strike in the most unusual places. This episode is for founders, CEOs, and senior executives (and leaders) who have reached a level of success that looks impressive on the outside, but who privately wonder if the climb was supposed to feel more meaningful than this. If you've ever achieved the next milestone only to find the goalpost had already moved, this conversation will reframe how you lead, how you grow, and how you define fulfillment on your own terms. Jourdan's story teaches us that adversity is not a liability to overcome for the leaders willing to reframe it.  It is the most durable competitive advantage you will ever have. Her story is proof that the ability to contextualize hardship, stay resourceful under pressure, and lead with vulnerability is not taught in business school, it is developed in the moments that test you most.
