HEALTH CHATTER is a weekly podcast in which Dr. Stan Shanedling, Clarence Jones, Dr. Barry Baines and special guests bring a dynamic conversational lens to many of today's health issues. It's a podcast for people young, old and professional and from various backgrounds. It is intended to bring to light through open conversation the health concerns and questions we all face. Stan and Clarence have had different health career trajectories but compliment each other through a trusted dialogue of teaching, learning and disagreeing at times that in the end creates all smiles!

    Genetic Counseling with Dr. Krista Redlinger-Grosse & Ellory Lopez

    Stan and Clarence chat with Dr. Krista Redlinger-Grosse and Ellory Lopez about Genetic Counseling. Together, they explore the field of genetic counseling and its role in helping individuals and families understand genetic information, risks, and diagnoses. Dr. Krista Redlinger-Grosse – Faculty member with the University of Minnesota Genetic Counseling Training Program – earned her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the Johns Hopkins University/National Institutes of Health Genetic Counseling Training Program and her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She teaches psychosocial skills and theory, advises students, and directs fieldwork and supervisory training. Krista also maintains a private practice supporting individuals and families impacted by genetic information, risks, and diagnoses. Her work focuses on integrating genetic counseling and psychology through clinical practice, education, and research. Ellory Lopez – Board-Certified Clinical Genetic Counselor at Fairview – earned her master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from the University of Minnesota. She specializes in helping patients and families navigate genetic conditions by making complex genetic information understandable, actionable, and compassionate. In addition to her clinical work, Ellory educates future genetic counselors and serves as co-chair of the Minnesota Genetic Counseling Association’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.     What's Next in Public Health with MPHA President-Elect William Moore

    Stan, Clarence, Barry and the Health Chatter team chat with William Moore – Minnesota Public Health Association President-Elect, Race & Health Equity Administrator for Ramsey County’s Health and Wellness Service Team, and Doula – about What’s Next in Public Health. William Moore – President-Elect of the Minnesota Public Health Association – currently serves as the Race and Health Equity Administrator for Ramsey County’s Health and Wellness Service Team. Previously, William worked as a Health Educator with Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health, where his work focused on chronic disease prevention and policy, systems, and environmental change. William spent seven years with Saint Paul Public Schools as a behavioral management teaching assistant before joining the YMCA to lead youth outreach programming. Through this work, he participated in National Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C., advocating on Capitol Hill for public health legislation, nonprofit organizations, youth outreach programs, and policies supporting youth safety. In 2019, William was recognized as a de Beaumont Foundation 40 Under 40 in Public Health honoree for his work in maternal and infant health. Serving as the first male doula in Minnesota, William works to address disparities in maternal and infant mortality. He has provided consultation and training and collaborated with organizations including public health departments, the Minnesota Fathers and Families Network, and the African American Babies Coalition.     Measles, Vaccinations, & Outbreaks

    Stan, Clarence, Barry and the Health Chatter team chat with Elizabeth Parilla and Jayne Griffith, from the Minnesota Department of Health, for a conversation about measles, vaccinations, and disease outbreaks. Elizabeth Parilla – Vaccine Preventable Disease Section Manager, Minnesota Department of Health – has spent nearly 20 years working in public health to support immunization efforts and prevent vaccine-preventable diseases. At the Minnesota Department of Health, she has served as an epidemiologist, supervisor, and manager, working alongside health care providers, community organizations, and public health partners to build and strengthen programs that help keep Minnesotans healthy. Beth also spent five years with the American Immunization Registry Association, where she supported collaboration among immunization programs across the country. Jayne Griffith – Senior Epidemiologist, Minnesota Department of Health – joined the Minnesota Department of Health in 2000 and became the department’s first bioterrorism epidemiologist following the 2001 anthrax attacks. In that role, she worked with federal partners to develop plans for the early detection of and response to bioterrorism-related disease threats. Throughout her career as an infectious disease epidemiologist, Jayne has responded to numerous public health threats, including the 2001 anthrax letters, SARS, Ebola, H1N1 influenza, COVID-19, and more than 200 measles cases. Before joining the Minnesota Department of Health, she worked as a clinical research program manager at the University of Minnesota and VA Medical Center and held adjunct faculty positions at Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Winona State University. She earned a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.
