    3% of Black & Latin Women are Restaurant Leaders why!

    In my last episode we learned that only 6% of women are top chefs & restaurant operators. On this episode I explain why Women of Color only make 3% of that number! You will hear speak about representation and how that matters when you don’t have a role model who looks like you and experienced the same things you’re experiencing - how that affects women of color climbing the latter. I talk about women of color experiencing prejudice and sexual harassment and how when women operators respond to these situations safer environments are created. Last, I talk about how as women of color we might feel the need to lead in a masculine energy- due to being surrounded by men who don’t believe in us. I go on to explaining how one woman owner changed this belief and provided her staff with more impactful leadership.

    I work with the Underrepresented: Women

    Welcome to episode three where I talk about why I help women of color get into leadership positions in the restaurant industry. Only 6% of top chefs and restaurants operators are women. This is based on research because we have responsibilities at home and families to take care of, and so we don’t even apply to these jobs in the 1st place. When women do become restaurant operators there are benefits to how safe the environment is in a field where sexual harassment is at a all time high. When women operate restaurants there is little to no sexual harassment. According to two articles that I scrolled over, women are like the mothers of their restaurant. They provide better policies- thinking ahead about maternity leave, reshaping their restaurant culture to be exclusive, and requiring staff to eat during their shifts and take days off to enjoy with their family.

    Hi and welcome to Rising Restauranteur Podcast., I am your host Jhoanny. I am a Dominican Immigrant who came to this country when I was two years old. I came with my mother and grandmother and lived in a one bedroom apartment with other family members. We made ends meet and we’re on food stamps. I saw my mother make the ultimate sacrifice, went back to school and worked to save money. She was a cashier. She dreamed of opening her own business. My mother opened her first restaurant  and then expanded to three others. We have been in the industry for 10 years. It was during the pandemic I realized I wanted to coach women on starting a business. And I thought to myself what is the one thing, I can teach? I then realused I had so much know about the process my mom went through and how they operate the restaurants. I decided I wanted to be that person who made time to mentor other women of color In starting the food business of their dreams.
