    Episode 10 - Leading in 2022; A year in review

    It's a holiday season miracle! It's been an awesome year in a lot of ways, and a difficult year in many others. We take the opportunity of wrapping up the year, and the first season of our podcast, with a bit of a retrospective of 2022. We dive into the career-related things we've learned since joining new teams at the start of the year, give you an upfront explanation of the process and "hows" of starting a podcast, and our plans for the future.  We then explore what makes the holiday season special - a time to slow down, indulge, and reflect, but also a time to remind you that for some, the season can also be stressful and difficult. And that's okay! Happy Holidays everyone, and we'll see you all in 2023!

    We're back, baby! It's been a while - it turns out scheduling is hard! We have a jam-packed episode for you today in return- our first episode with a guest!! We are so happy to be joined in this episode by Darryl Mabini, Assistant Vice President for Pension Advocacy & Research at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. We cover a wide range of topics, from the truths and myths of retirement saving, to parenting tips from a father of four! Note: Later in the episode, Linh got the Defined Contribution and Defined Benefit pension plan types switched around in one of her comments.

    Episode 8 - Surviving on all sides of a layoff

    It has been a particularly tough week for the tech industry, especially in Canada. Sean still has a job, but that doesn't make seeing coworkers and friends leaving any easier. Layoffs are a business decision, but how come it feels so personal? Linh and Sean share their perspectives on what we can do for ourselves, and for each other, when we have to say goodbye to our colleagues.

    SURPRISE! We're dropping a hot new pod as we leave for our first international trip since the pandemic, and couldn't keep from recording a slightly different kind of episode today. No vices. Not much career talk, and mostly just spilling our guts about our relationship with money over time, personal finance, and things we've learned that we would love to share about trying to be more in control of our money and not the other way around.  We'll be back in June with our normal podcast schedule!

    We have revamped our podcast site, careeraddvice.com! Go check it out! We also have launched our discord community - join and get in on the ground floor of something special! This is a space where we can talk careers, share more advice with each other, and build out a network of careeraddvicearites. Hmm... maybe that name won't stick. But that shouldn't stop you from joining the Discord! In this great episode we discuss the great resignation/great reshuffle, and some of the great things people need to keep in mind or balance when looking for a great new job, which tend to fall under one of 3 categories: the job itself, the team you'll be on, and the company as a whole.  Sean also shares one of his biggest vices, which is the "art" of game collecting.

    What you end up doing throughout your career is rarely premeditated. Your wants, needs, and lifestyle continue to change, and suddenly your childhood dream of being an architect or CEO have shifted away. In this episode we talk at length about our career paths, how they turned out much differently from what we expected going into school, and how that has changed how we approach building relationships and climbing the career ladder. We share our top learnings so far from what we've experienced, but, spoilers: not all learnings are applicable to everyone!  We also dive into Sean's vice of building a smart home at great risk to information privacy!
