    Dennis Shepp - 2026 Quadra Alumni Weekend

    Send us Fan Mail This year was Dennis Shepp’s first Quadra Alumni event, thankfully we found time to sit down and record an episode.  Dennis is from Regina Saskatchewan, RCSCC Impregnable #43, and he first attended HMCS Quadra in 1971 as a Two Weekie! Dennis has vivid memories of his first summer at Quadra including the Jetty Jump and singing Heart of Oak in the water with his fellow trainees.  He returned the following summer to take part in the first ever (1972) Medical Assistant Course at HMCS Quadra.  Dennis was quick to turn his new knowledge towards the St. John’s Ambulance program and rapidly became an instructor in his hometown and home Corps.   An OJT position in the Sick Bay was where he spent his summer in 1973. In 1978, Dennis joined the Naval Reserve Unit in Regina (HMCS Queen) specifically to set up the new Sick Bay.  His civilian career included training at the Saskatchewan Police College and joining the Wascana Police Service where he continued to share his medical training with numerous police officers.  Dennis moved into the private sector after policing which offered him great opportunities around the world.  He furthered his education and obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration which led him to being hired by Saudi Aramco as a full-time security advisor. Dennis calls himself an “aviation enthusiast” and loves to attend airshows in his free time and chat with young people in the field.  At the 100th Anniversary of Canada’s Naval Reserve, Dennis got a chance to speak with Captain(N) Alsgard and reminisce about his MedA Course in 1972.     Roly Stankevicius - 2026 Quadra Alumni Weekend

    Send us Fan Mail Roly Stankevicius joined JTCVC in the Fall of 1969 at 14 years old.  His first Summer at HMCS Quadra was in 1970 on the Two Week General Training Course.   Roly recalls the summer being challenging, character building and a lot of fun meeting new Cadets from across the Country. Roly and other mates from his era continue to holiday together and remember fondly their times at Quadra.  Many of them plan sailing and golf adventures to wind up at the Quadra Alumni Weekend every couple of years.   Roly achieved his Communicator Qualification at Naden in 1972 and returned to Quadra as an OJT for 2 years on the confidence course, range and parade square!  He aged out as a Cadet and decided to move into the Cadet Instructor List to attend the Officer Cadet Course in 1975.  He returned for summer training at Quadra until 1983.  Roly has a Commerce Degree but moved into teaching with some influence from future wife Barb Cirelli.     Send us Fan Mail Thanks to Joan Feringa for swinging by to talk about her experiences at HMCS Quadra and to share more about her volunteer role on the Alumni Association Executive team. Joan’s first year at HMCS Quadra was Two Week General Training (TWGT) in 1977.  After 1 year at HMCS Acadia in the Band program, Joan returned to the “Q” as a Practical Leadership (PL) Cadet in 1979.  Hearing Joan’s story about overcoming her health limitations is very inspiring.  After a long career in the Canadian Coast Guard Joan has branched out into Conflict Analysis and Management and attributes her Sea Cadet experience as a base for her private work life. Joan Feringa, M.A., Dipl.N.Sc., (she/her) has been an educator, leader, coach and conflict navigator/practitioner with a long-standing connection to water through time with Sea Cadets and the Canadian Coast Guard: competencies continue to inform her work today. She holds a Master’s degree in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University (2002) and numerous certifications in facilitation, mediation, risk management, and coaching. Her thesis “A Hammer or the Whole Toolbox? Conflict Management in Organizations” focused on systems for conflict prevention and resolution. After two decades of research solving caustic, costly issues, Joan identified a clear and critical gap in conflict prevention: Conflict First Aid™. After proving volunteers could help with the most basic evidence-based de-escalation and prevention skills (equivalent to medical and mental health first aid), Conflict First Aid™ certificates were awarded for the first time in January, 2020.     Doug Ede

    Send us Fan Mail Thanks to Doug Ede for stopping by the studio to chat about Quadra - mainly flotilla stuff!  He happened to be working on the island for a couple of weeks so great opportunity to chat. Doug joined Sea Cadets at #47 RCSCC Captain Vancouver after seeing some kids doing a sailing class in Coal Harbour while he was playing a cricket match in Stanley Park.  Doug’s first summer at HMCS Quadra was 1976 for TWGT.  He turned to Athletic Leadership in 1977 at CFB Borden, before returning to the Q as a PERI in 1978 and 1979. Doug decided to join the CIL in 1980 and attended the Officer Cadet Training Course that summer.  At summers end, Doug was presented the Top Candidate Award.  He really enjoyed his Sea Phases on Flotilla and that led him to Tender Command the following year.  Doug is proud of his 5 years as a Flotilla officer and the experiences he gained working both Group South and North. Thanks to Doug for sharing a memory of being tossed over the side of a vessel at night and being told to be on parade in #1 uniform for Colours.  Such a universal memory for so many Alumni members.     Manon Mitchell - Trail Blazer

    Send us Fan Mail In August 2025 the Quadra Alumni Association celebrated 50 years of women at HMCS Quadra.  In this episode of the podcast, it was a real pleasure hearing from Manon Mitchell and her journey of attending HMCS Quadra in 1975 and beyond.  She is definitely one of the “original trailblazers” and many have called her an inspiration for younger women that followed in her footsteps.     Send us Fan Mail Thanks to Rick MacDonald for stopping into the studio while visiting Victoria.  Rick is originally from RCSCC Qu’Appelle in Winnipeg, he spent six weeks at Esquimalt Sea Cadet Camp in 1974 before attending the Quadra School of Music in 1975.  Rick later experienced camp life in Whitehorse for a few years.  Once he turned 19, he did enroll in the CIC through the home Corps where he met his wife JoAnn. I got a chance to chat about sports, hobbies and work life with Rick.  I think you’ll enjoy hearing his stories and related experiences.  I couldn’t convince Rick to become a Lions fan, but I learned that his brother runs the “let’s Talk CFL” podcast and Rick has been a co-host on several episodes. Rick makes a special mention of Bev MacKillop and hopes she makes the quadra alumni event this summer!     Former Commanding Officer (2005-2008) - Pamela Audley

    Send us Fan Mail Commander Pamela Audley served as Commanding Officer at Quadra from 2005-2008.  As we celebrate 50 years of women at HMCS Quadra it seems appropriate to share this episode with all Alumni.  She was the first and still is the only female to serve as XO and CO at the camp.   It was a real honour to interview her and learn so much about her past Cadet career and life. Pam talks about some of her mentors, many of her favourite memories about some Quadra antics!  She was also the first female CIC Officer to win the Massey Memorial Sword on her BOQ Course in 1986.  Pam was grateful to work in Provincial Corrections in her civilian life and ironically it was a perfect fit for her to carry on through years of summer training at HMCS Quadra.  She plans on staying involved in the Cadet world as a Regional Advisor and will be at numerous ACR’s throughout the Spring and some CTC’s in the Summer.
