GenXicans and Culture-Making in the Nuevo South

If you grew up in California or Texas, your experience of Latinx culture might be a bit different from those of you who grew up in the "The Nuevo South"... in places like Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Alexandra M. Landeros (who grew up in Los Angeles, lived in Austin for almost two decades, and has made Durham home since 2018) shares her thoughts on culture-making in the Nuevo South with David Saldaña (who grew up in Austin and has lived in Los Angeles for just over a decade). Also, if you've ever wondered what happens to son jarocho from Veracruz when it makes its way to North Carolina, or how Latinx music can intersect with Appalachian music at the border of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, you'll hear all about Alexandra's recent adventures with Fandango de Durham and The Mountain Fiesta.

So, we share the collective identity of being GenXican, which is what you get when you cross a Mexican American with a GenXer. But which VERSION are we? 1.0, 1.25, 1.75, 2.0, 3.0, etc.? Do you start counting with the generation that moved to the U.S., or the generation that was born and raised here? Does your version number indicate how closely you identify with la tierra madre AKA Mexico? Hear what David Saldaña and Alexandra M. Landeros have to say about the matter.
