    The Apple of the Lord’s Eye

    Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord. 11 And many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day, and shall be My people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. Zechariah 2:10-11 Last Sunday we continued in Zechariah chapter 2, seeing the man with a measuring line (the Pre-incarnate Christ) promise that Jerusalem will be filled again, protected by the Lord as a wall of fire, and inhabited with people from many nations who will join themselves to the Lord. The vision calls God's scattered people to return. It promises judgment on those who plunder His own, the apple of His eye, and points forward to the day when the Lord will dwell amid His people in glory. The text lifts the eyes of the church into redemptive history and prophetic future. Christ will come, reign, and radiate glory from Jerusalem, then hand the kingdom to the Father when He makes all things new. Yet even now the Spirit gives a foretaste of presence within. Those in Christ are the apple of His eye. And so, faith endures discipline, entrusts justice to God, and refuses the yoke of Babylon’s system. Considering these things, there is a time to sing and rejoice and a time for silent awe, and both are fitting responses to the God who measures, returns, indwells, and guards His people.

    Four Horns & Four Craftsmen

    And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, four horns! 19 And I said to the angel who talked with me, “What are these?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” 20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” He said, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, so that no one raised his head. And these have come to terrify them, to cast down the horns of the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.” Zechariah 1:18-21 I hope this finds you encouraged by our study of Zechariah and reminded that our God is both perfectly just and wonderfully merciful. Last Sunday we continued in Zechariah and looked closely at the second night-vision — the four horns that scattered Judah and the four craftsmen God raised up to terrify and cast down those horns. The vision presses home two truths: although God disciplines His people in love, He will judge nations who go too far against His people. We also noted that God’s justice works with patient skill. The craftsman image slows the heart down to God’s pace. Divine judgment is not sloppy or vengeful; it is careful, measured, and timed. Often the pattern only shows when the piece is finished, but the Master’s hands never slip. What’s more, He is merciful and desires that all reach repentance. May we take heart in and reflect our God’s justice and mercy.

    The Red Horse Rider & The Return of Mercy

    Therefore, thus says the Lord, I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy; My house shall be built in it, declares the Lord of hosts, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. 17 Cry out again, Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem. Zechariah 1:16-17 The Red Horse Rider & Return of Mercy I hope this note finds you encouraged by last Sunday's vision of the Red Horse Rider and reminder that the LORD remembers and returns to His people with mercy. Last Sunday we continued in Zechariah 1 and considered the first of eight-night visions the LORD gave him— the striking image of a man on a red horse standing among the myrtle trees, later identified as the angel of the Lord, the pre incarnate Christ. The other angelic riders and their red, sorrel, and white horses speak of both judgment and victory, and their patrols reporting the nations are at rest even as the Messiah intercedes, asking, “How long will you have no mercy on Jerusalem?” Yahweh answers with gracious and comforting words: “I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy,” promising the rebuilding of His house, the stretching of the measuring line over Jerusalem, renewed prosperity, and comfort for Zion — a word to steady us that God is at work and will fulfill His promises. So let that word steady you when you find yourself asking “how long?” — bring those questions to Jesus in prayer, trust His intercession, and press on in the work He has given us to do. If you’ve wandered or need fresh mercy today, return to Him; and if you’re growing weary in well doing, remember the Lord disciplines in love and will complete the good work He began in you. And, we’re here to encourage, equip and pray for you.

    Return to Me and I Will Return to You

    Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 1:3 Greetings, friends! This past Sunday we began a new series in the Old Testament prophetic book of Zechariah. There is so much for us to take away from this post-exile prophet. After considering the historical setting, we considered an overview of the entire collection of Zechariah’s writings from the various words of the LORD that came to him. As we will see throughout Zechariah, there are familiar prophecies that have been fulfilled and grand end-time prophesies yet to be fulfilled. Finally, we unpacked the message of the first words he received. In the context of encouraging the recently returned exiles towards rebuilding the temple to the LORD, He wanted them to also return to Him in their hearts. If they returned to Him, He would return to them. That message has enduring application for those who need to turn to the LORD the first time, or for those of us who need to return to Him yet again. May the Lord help us all return to Him and bless us as we do!

    Remember & Honor

    Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. 3 Full of splendor and majesty is His work, and His righteousness endures forever. Psalm 111:1-3 I hope this note finds you remembering the Lord’s wondrous works and offering Him wholehearted praise. This past Sunday we walked through Psalm 111, a short song of praise that calls us to remember and study the great works of the Lord in creation, providence, and redemption. We saw that studying and delighting in God’s works leads to a reverent fear of the Lord, faithful obedience to his precepts, and a life of wisdom and worship. I encouraged us to be students of the Lord—disciplining our minds with Scripture, sharing the reasons for our hope, and living out our discipleship in both word and deed. So this week, practice being a student of the Lord: read Psalm 111 a few times, let what you learn shape your praise and your choices, and share one brief testimony with someone about how God has provided for you. And plan to join us next week as we begin our verse-by-verse study in Zechariah.
