Zechariah: A Cup of Staggering & A Heavy Stone

The oracle of the word of the LORD concerning Israel: Thus declares the LORD, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: “Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples.” Zechariah 12:1-2a A Cup of Staggering & A Heavy Stone I hope you left Sunday encouraged by the sure promise that the Lord will return, deliver His people, and reign in righteousness. As we began Zechariah 12, we saw that the Lord—Maker of heaven and earth and the One who formed the spirit of man—is speaking about events still to come. Jerusalem will become a cup of staggering and a heavy stone as all the nations gather against it, but the Lord will protect and strengthen His people, destroy their enemies, and give them victory. This points us to the future return of Jesus Christ, the ultimate Son of David, who will deliver Israel and establish His earthly kingdom. These promises should lead us to worship the Lord, listen to His Word, stand against deception, and rest in the strength He gives. Until that day, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, and remember that the Lord is your strength—not your circumstances, abilities, or resources. Trust in Him through weakness and hardship, and look for opportunities to proclaim the gospel even to those who are deceived or hostile, because the Lord is still saving sinners. Our future is secure, and the day is coming when faith will become sight. Amen, come quickly Lord Jesus!

    Identifying the False Shepherd

Woe to My worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye! Let his arm be wholly withered, his right eye utterly blinded! Zechariah 11:17 I hope you left Sunday encouraged to recognize the false shepherd and to trust the good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who lays down His life for His sheep. In Zechariah 11:15–17, we saw a prophecy concerning the ultimate foolish and worthless shepherd—the Antichrist, a morally corrupt leader who will not care for the flock but will devour and destroy it. Scripture teaches that the Lord will allow this wicked shepherd to rise as a judgment upon those who refuse to love the truth, yet his authority and strength will come to a complete end when Jesus returns. We were also reminded that the spirit of lawlessness and many false teachers are already at work, so we must test every message against the Word of God. In contrast to every false shepherd, Jesus is the good Shepherd who gave His life to reconcile sinners to God and deliver us from the wrath to come. May we all live in the hope that is ours in Christ and be ever looking for opportunities to share that hope with others so that they may be delivered from the false shepherd and the wrath that is to come.

    Zechariah: Rejecting the Good Shepherd

Then the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD, to the potter. Zechariah 11:13 Rejecting the Good Shepherd Greetings, friends! I pray that this finds you well. Sunday we reflected on the sobering warning and gracious hope we saw in Zechariah 11:1-14. Through vivid images of destruction and doomed sheep, the Lord warned that Israel’s corrupt shepherds would exploit the flock and reject the Messiah, the Good Shepherd, who came to care for and save the people. Zechariah’s two staffs, Favor and Union, pointed ahead to Jesus, the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep and provides the way for sinners to have favor with God. Israel’s rejection was pictured in the thirty pieces of silver—the price placed on the Messiah. And their rejection would lead to judgment, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the continued disunity of the nation. Yet the poor in spirit who recognize their need and receive Jesus discover the greatest favor of all: becoming children of God and being united with Him and His people. As we look forward to the final outworking of the Lord’s plans, let us do so with joyful confidence that He will accomplish it all and share the good news with others who have yet to receive the Good Shepherd.

Zechariah: Six Promises from God to His People

I hope this week finds you encouraged by the good, good Father whose gifts and calling are irrevocable. Zechariah 10 reminds us that God has made six irrevocable promises to Israel, all centered in Jesus Christ, the cornerstone, the tent peg, and the battle bow, who holds up His people and gives them victory. He promises divine rain and blessing, judgment against false gods and false shepherds, strength and salvation for His people, rejoicing as He gathers them, and complete restoration to the land He promised them. Though Israel has been scattered and afflicted, the covenant-keeping God says, “I will bring them home,” because He is the Lord their God and He will fulfill His word. These promises also point us to the sure foundation we have in Christ when the storms rage, and the voices of the world call us away. This week, listen carefully for the voice of your Shepherd and examine the choices you are making. Do not allow the gods and false shepherds of this world to squeeze you into its mold; stand on the Word of God, choose the very best, and live for His glory as you await the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ. Blessings, Pastor Bill

Behold, Your King is Coming to You

On that day the LORD their God will save them, as the flock of His people; for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on His land. Zechariah 9:16 I hope you are rejoicing this week in the good news that our righteous and saving King has come—and that He is coming again. Zechariah 9:9–17 contrasts the humble King who came riding on a donkey with the conquering King who will return to defeat His enemies, protect His people, and bring lasting peace. Jesus fulfilled the first part of this prophecy on Palm Sunday, coming in humility to seek and save the lost through His blood, and He will fulfill the rest when He returns in victory. Because God has not forgotten His covenant promises, His people can live as “prisoners of hope,” trusting that the Lord will ultimately restore, save, and shepherd us. So where is your hope fixed right now—in your house, savings account, physical strength, wisdom, the fact that you live in America, or in God Himself? Until our King returns, let us rejoice in the Lord always, bring our requests to Him with thanksgiving, and share the hope we have in Christ with those around us.

    Eyes on You

This past Sunday we began Zechariah 9 and encountered a sharp shift into a burdensome oracle against Hadrach, Damascus, Tyre, Sidon and the Philistine cities — a passage that was remarkably fulfilled in part by Alexander the Great yet points beyond him to the ultimate day when the Lord Himself will "encamp at My house as a guard." We unpacked how God used history to humble proud nations, how a remnant of former enemies will be gathered to Himself, and how this all underscores God's sovereignty, the truthfulness of Scripture, and His care for His afflicted people. The promise is both comfort for Zechariah's original hearers and hope for us: God sees, God acts, and His word will be accomplished. So don't let fear of the future steal your hope — fix your eyes on the Lord who rules history and guards His people. Pray for those who oppose us, expect God to work in unexpected ways, and if you are wrestling with where you stand before Him my door is open. I’d love to listen, share and pray.

    From Fasting to Feasting

I pray this week finds you strengthened by Zechariah’s clear word from the LORD to "let your hands be strong" and to "fear not." Last Sunday we walked through Zechariah 8:9–17 in the context of the returned exiles and the call to rebuild the temple, noting how God contrasts past discipline with present and future blessing. We saw how Haggai and Zechariah together urge God’s people to be strengthened by His prophetic word, to expect a sowing of peace and an eventual turning from curse to blessing, and to live that reality out in concrete ways—speaking truth, rendering just judgments, devising no evil in your heart, and loving no false oath. This promise looks forward to fuller fulfillment in Christ’s return, but it also speaks directly to our lives now: God is at work to restore and bless those who repent and obey. So let your hands be strong in the work the Lord has given you. Do not let fear impede you. Stop tolerating small evils in your speech and thought, refuse false oaths, and make your judgments and daily dealings honest so they make for peace. If you’ve drifted from faithful obedience, confess and return to the Lord’s work. Do not fear, but be strong in the Lord and the power of His might!
