A Conversation about Grounded Spirituality with Jeff Brown

What if spirituality is about embracing more of our humanity? In this episode, Laurita is in conversation with author Jeff Brown, and together they explore the dangers of toxic positivity and dissociative spiritual practices, and the negative implications for trauma survivors. Jeff shares his story of his spiritual journey and what led him to embrace a more embodied and integrated path that he believes is more sustainable.  Episode Highlights: The risk of spiritual bypassing The need for nuance, critical thinking, and healthy questioning Somatic psychotherapy as a gateway to grounded spirituality Authenticity versus forgiveness A former criminal lawyer and psychotherapist, Jeff Brown is the author of multiple books and has been featured on Good Morning America, Fox News, ABC, CBS, and NPR.  He is the owner of Enrealment Press, a grassroots publishing house determined to bring grounded, heartfelt creations to the world, and founder of Soulshaping Institute, an online center for authentic transformation. In Jeff’s latest book, Grounded Spirituality, he introduces readers to a new paradigm of spirituality - a model that encourages us to embrace our humanness, not disassociate from it.  In his fiercely authentic, no-holds-barred style, Jeff reveals that what we view as ‘spiritual’ is often devoid of the gift that makes us most alive—our precious and unique selfhood. He demonstrates that true spirituality is a whole-being awakening, one that heartfully embraces our entire human experience: our feelings, our stories, our bodies, our relationships with others, and the earth that houses us. Perfectionism as a Skill Set with Jake Ernst

Perfectionism is something many of us experience and is often driven from shame, anxiety, or fear - but it's not something we should always vilify.  This conversation with our guest, Jake, lends itself to a new way of looking at perfectionism and rather than trying to stop being a perfectionist, we are invited to embrace perfectionism as a skill set instead. In this episode, Jake and I talk about the 8 modes of perfectionism, how to cultivate compassion, and the journey of embracing who we really are. Jake is a writer, social worker, and psychotherapist and works primarily with children and teens who have experienced trauma, relational challenges, and mental health issues.  Being vulnerable, finding our inner voice, and embracing our sense of self can feel challenging. Jake shares his vulnerable experience of writing a letter to his late father - an experience that supported him with renegotiating an important and tender period in his life.  Episode Highlights: What brought Jake to the field of social work The role of serotonin and dopamine in relation to our mental health The 8 modes of perfectionism What are the practices for working through perfectionism How do we embrace who we really are A beautiful and powerful letter he wrote to his late father that went viral What are the routes of safety, and how can people work with them Connect with Jake Ernst: Instagram: @mswjake Twitter: @mswjake A Letter From A Gay Son To His Late Father Where to find Laurita Gorman: Instagram: @wildlyunraveled Website: www.lauritagorman.com Did you enjoy this episode?
