Recovery Doesn't End, She Proves It Every Day , She is DETERMINED l #201

She was DETERMINED to not let Broca's aphasia slow her down.  Recovery after a stroke and aphasia never stops.   Get your starting point: https://findaphasiasupport.com   If you think you're done — you're not.  Nine years in, Michelle is still proving that recovery doesn't end when you think it does.     You've been here a while. Maybe a year, maybe longer. And somewhere along the way you accepted it: this is the recovery. This is as good as it gets. The gains have stopped. You're managing now, not improving.   That's the story you're telling yourself. I want to tell you a different one. Nine years ago, Michelle Clemens was a news anchor and reporter. She was living the professional life she'd built. Then she had a brain bleed. Three surgeries. 1% odds. Aphasia. Apraxia. And somewhere around year one, like everyone else, she probably thought recovery had a finish line and she'd found it.   But she didn't stop. She took a three-week cruise when she could barely speak. She went back to school. She wrote a book. She became a trainer, a speaker, a documentary producer. Nine years in, she's still working. Still improving. Still living a life that proves something nobody tells you: recovery doesn't have an endpoint.   Not if you don't want it to.   Her dad Vince is here too, sharing what it looks like to support someone who keeps deciding to rebuild. Together they wrote a book called "Determined" about her first year of recovery. But Michelle lived eight more years beyond it.   00:00 Critical Surgery Decision 01:02 Meet Michelle and Vince 01:56 Life Before the Stroke 02:56 Midnight Headache Warning 05:46 Brain Bleed and Transfer 06:46 Determination in Recovery 08:49 CaringBridge Support Network 10:42 Australia Cruise Milestone 12:46 Inside the Book Determined 14:51 New Life and Four Jobs 16:09 Power of Attorney Wake-Up Call 17:54 Where to Get the Book 18:31 Rebuilding Life After Aphasia 19:01 Final Thanks and Links   You're not done recovering. Aphasia Awareness May Not Be Enough. Here's How to Start Rebuilding | #200

You used to talk to anyone. The cashier. The neighbor. The guy at Home Depot. Now you sit in the car with your aphasia and let your wife go instead. Want to get back to being "the guy?" Take your first action: https://aphasiastrengthscompass.com   In this episode I talk about Jerry. Four years post-stroke. His world had gotten tiny. He didn't see his own responsibility in getting back to himself. He felt that traditional rehabilitation and speech therapy didn't fully preparing him for real-world challenges.     Three things came out of that conversation.  - His world shrank because shame was driving it, not aphasia recovery.  - The people around him pulled back because they were following his lead.  - And his voice had literally gotten softer over four years because he had decided he was less worth hearing.   Once he saw those three things, everything changed. I walk you through what we did next. You can start this week.   Your first action this Aphasia Action Month is the Aphasia Strengths Compass. It shows you exactly where you stand in your communication right now and what to build on first.   Take your first action here: https://aphasiastrengthscompass.com   00:00 When Talking Feels Risky 01:00 How Isolation Creeps In 01:40 Meet Jerry’s Story 03:47 The Shame Belief Trap 04:41 Why Others Pull Back 05:11 Jerry’s Voice Got Softer 06:35 Step 1 Practice Your Voice 07:23 Step 2 Plan and Advocate 08:22 Step 3 Return to One Place 09:13 Rebuilder Experience Overview 10:12 Aphasia Strengths Compass 10:35 Rebuild and Join the Community   Aphasia Awareness is good and necessary, but it doesn't get you off the couch.  Aphasia Action is taking the intentional steps to rebuilding your life.     You deserve a LIFE Beyond Aphasia
