Make the First Shot Count: Bowhunting Truths with Jason Wilson

Make the First Shot Count: Bowhunting Truths with Jason Wilson Bow season is here, and this episode isn't about how many arrows you can sling into a target. It's about whether you can make the first one count. On this episode of the From Field To Plate Podcast, I sit down with my good friend, hunter, outdoorsman, and hunting advocate Jason Wilson, better known online as Yeti Man 10. Jason is passionate about bowhunting, conservation, the Second Amendment, and making sure hunters actually use their voices. We dive deep into becoming a more effective and ethical bowhunter, starting with Jason's number one piece of advice: your first arrow matters more than your 50th. Instead of bragging about tiny groups after you've warmed up, Jason challenges hunters to pull their bow out cold and put that first arrow inside a three-inch circle. From there, we get into real-world bowhunting, not just standing twenty yards from a target in the backyard. We talk about practicing from actual hunting positions, understanding scent and wind, ranging landmarks before the deer ever shows up, eliminating unnecessary movement, knowing animal anatomy, understanding shot angles, and why confidence in your equipment matters when everything finally comes together. We also get into some topics that might ruffle a few feathers, including shot placement, the fear of hitting the shoulder blade, how deer react to the sound of an arrow, and why a feeding deer with its head down can react differently than a deer with its head up. Jason and I also compare Eastern whitetail hunting to Western mule deer hunting, including the massive differences in terrain, deer populations, tag systems, predator management, and hunting opportunities from state to state. The conversation naturally turns toward conservation, predator control, trapping, wildlife management, and what happens when hunters stop participating in those conversations. And, because it's Jason, we couldn't finish without talking about hunters using their voices. Jason has spent plenty of time advocating behind the scenes for hunters and the Second Amendment. His message is simple: there are roughly 20 million hunters in America, and when hunters actually speak together, politicians pay attention. If we want hunting, public land access, conservation, and our outdoor traditions to survive, we can't expect somebody else to fight the fight for us. Most importantly, Jason leaves bowhunters with one final reminder: none of these tips mean anything if you don't put in the work. Learn your bow, understand your limitations, practice realistically, and when hunting season arrives... Make the first shot count. In This Episode: Making your first arrow the one that matters Why shooting until you're fatigued can create bad habits Practicing realistic hunting scenarios Scent control and understanding the wind Pre-ranging your hunting area Reducing unnecessary movement when an animal approaches Eastern whitetails vs. Western mule deer Understanding animal anatomy and shot angles Why hunters fear the shoulder blade How deer react to an arrow Conservation and predator management Why trapping still matters Hunter advocacy and protecting hunting rights Why hunters need to vote and make their voices heard Follow Jason Wilson Instagram: @YetiMan10 Jason specifically points listeners to his Yeti Man 10 Instagram and says his YouTube content is under the same name. Sean Johnson: @Getsaucednj. Season 2, Episode 2

What happens when two wild game cooks, content creators, and hunters sit down with no script? A conversation that's equal parts barbecue, social media, faith, hunting, and plenty of laughs. In this episode of From Field to Plate, Jeremiah Doughty is joined by Sean Johnson, better known as GetSaucedNJ, to talk about everything from growing a food brand during COVID to why authenticity always beats perfection on social media. Sean shares how a few live cooking videos evolved into one of the fastest-growing wild game cooking pages online, why he traded expensive camera equipment for his phone, and how embracing "real" content completely changed his success. The conversation goes far beyond recipes. Jeremiah and Sean dive into the misconceptions surrounding wild game, why every deer tastes different depending on habitat and diet, the importance of introducing new hunters to great food, and how creativity in the kitchen can change someone's entire opinion of venison, duck, pheasant, and other wild game. They also discuss faith, fishing, the peace found on the water, social media censorship, dealing with internet trolls, mentoring new hunters, and why the hunting community is stronger when creators support each other instead of competing. Whether you're a hunter, fisherman, backyard pitmaster, or someone looking to become more confident cooking wild game, this episode is full of practical tips, hilarious stories, and thoughtful conversations.
