Ep. 15: Slipping Saddles, Illegal Shoes, Early Retirements & a Lack of Storytelling

On this episode of Unfiltered, Michael Wilson is joined by videographer and editor Jim Gazzale. The pair discuss the news of the week with Rich Strike's jockey Sonny Leon claiming a slipped saddle resulted in him giving an elbow to Tyler Gafflione in Saturday's Lukas Classic at Churchill Downs. Also why Michael believes, should Epicenter win the BC Classic next month, his stud fee would only go down should he race as a 4 year-old. This came as Michael and Jim discussed the reasons horses retire after short careers. Is handle the end-all-be-all for gauging a healthy sport? Michael shares his thoughts around a few other key metrics that paint a different, and maybe more accurate, picture of horse racing's overall health.

Ep. 14: Juicing, Cheating, Win Percentages, and more...

Juicing horses. High win percentages. Are they always connected? Do all high win percentage trainers cheat? How can you spot which ones do and which ones don’t? Legal therapeutic medication overages and off label use, is that the same as “juicing”? What are the differences. What we have here is a deep dive discussion on all this and more. Can we stop it? What role will and should HISA play? You won’t want to miss this no holds barred episode of Unfiltered on Past The Wire TV Michael Wilson and Jonathan Stettin really get into some nuts and bolts. As a bonus we’ll talk some claiming and Kissalot in The Smarty Jones possibly as a stop on the way to The Pennsylvania Derby.

Did we see any Breeders’ Cup horses at Saratoga opening week? It is never too early to talk Kentucky Derby or Breeders’ Cup. On this episode of Unfiltered our hosts Michael Wilson and Jonathan Stettin take a look back at the stakes races opening week at Saratoga with an eye on who we might see in The Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland in November. We saw some strong performances and also a few disappointing ones. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out going forward. At Past The Wire TV we will keep you ahead of the curve and you’ll have a leg up on the competition. We think you will appreciate the keen eyes and observations of Michael and Jon. The three panel the opening of the Saratoga 2022 meet and a few issues of controversy that go along with it. Get their takes on Juan Vazquez, a trainer who has pending animal cruelty issues involving the death of a racehorse, having two horses entered to run opening day at the premiere meet. Ep. 12: CBA, Sales and Transparency

Horse sales. Auctions. One of the most fascinating aspects of The Sport of Kings. A billion dollar industry that is unregulated and where much of what goes on goes on behind the scenes and is not talked about much. On Unfiltered on Past The Wire TV we don’t play that game or follow those rules. After all, we are Horse Racing Uncensored. On this episode Michael Wilson talks about the recent CBA meeting in Kentucky where he was a speaker and about how transparency and better communication was brought up and recognized as essential to do things better. Jonathan Stettin wasn’t buying what they were selling and had more of a show me outlook. We think you will enjoy both Michael and Jon’s takes. Get a glimpse into the sales game, how it transposes into looking at those Maiden Special Weight races we all love so much at the upcoming Saratoga meet. Thank you for watching Past The Wire TV. Nobody Does It Better.

Ep. 10: Pilot or Passenger?? Which is your jockey?

Welcome to another episode of Unfiltered on Past the Wire TV A lot of times people don’t differentiate a bad trip from a bad ride. There is a distinct difference and at times people can be quick on the draw to blame jockeys. That said, jockeys are human athletes, and they all at times make mistakes or could have used better judgement or made a better decision. Sometimes that will affect the outcome of a race. Pilots or passengers? A good jockey will consistently put their mounts in position to win. A great jockey can move a horse up and will win their fair share of races while not on the best horse by making the best moves, and out thinking and out riding their rivals. On this show we take a hard objective look at most of the jockeys who rode in this year’s Kentucky Derby. Michael Wilson and Jonathan Stettin classify the riders as a pilot or passenger and explain why from their own unique perspectives. As always it is a lively and interesting discussion. We plan to continue this segment from time to time so if you want to know where your favorite riders land on the list let us know. We’ll tell you where and why. You’ll also hear some weak and strong points about the jockeys you see and play every day. Thank you for tuning in and we hope you enjoy this episode of Unfiltered on Past the Wire TV.

Ep. 08: Re-Breaking in Horse Racing Defined

Re-breaking in horse racing. It is probably one of the most misunderstood things people talk about, especially handicappers. Many use it as a barometer to determine if a trainer is cheating or using something they shouldn’t be. What is re-breaking? How do you see or recognize it and more importantly; how do you distinguish it from changing leads and the result of pace ramifications. What you’ll hear on this show is pure gold when it comes to this important, sensitive and again often misunderstood topic. We take you where nobody else can or will. We’ll take you Past the Wire and give you the tools and insight to help you know exactly what you are seeing from both a trainer, manager and bloodstock agent perspective with Michael Wilson. We also have the perspective of a long time successful player and student of the game Jonathan Stettin. You can catch them both on our show Unfiltered on Past the Wire TV right here on our channel covering a wide array of subjects, but today they are on our regular show bringing you a world of information. Again this is pure gold on the best horse racing channel and show out there. Thank you for tuning in and we have a lot more coming! Count on it!

Ep. 07: This ain’t no clown show, lay-offs and the business side of transparency in horse racing

One thing you can’t say is Michael Wilson doesn’t pay his debts even if it is embarrassing to do so. he was dared to wear clown make up on Twitter should Secret oath not win The Preakness. She didn’t and hear he is. Don’t let the make-up fool you. This is an interesting show where our hosts Michael Wilson and Jonathan Stettin (who LOVED and BET with both hands Early Voting) talk layoffs for horses, transparency and the business side of horse racing and more.
