Unpopular Opinion: Higher education IS a privilege. ā€¼ļøWait, what?ā‰ļø šŸ‘€ No, not THAT kind of privilege. šŸ˜ The kind that says that IF a child is ā€œcollege materialā€ and is willing and able to put in the work, but feels not HAVING material wealth, is a barrier to their having the opportunity to attend an affordable 4-year university DEBT FREE: Think again. If you and your child have the will, I have the way. Iā€™ve done it with my OWN oldest child, am preparing my youngest child, and as a certified high school CTE educator, have helped children I taught do it. Tune in!

    Depending on the state you reside in, or the overall culture of the school district you reside in, you will almost always experience some level of pushback from guidance counselors about dual enrollment.  DO NOT be dissuaded or discouraged by this.  Expect it.  Plan for it.  Protect against it.  Arm yourself with information, advocate for your child, and work closely with your sponsor dual enrollment school to ensure your child is meeting deadlines and reaping the benefits of this priceless educational opportunity.     What is Vocational Rehabilitation? The State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services Program is authorized by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Rehabilitation Act), as amended by Title IV of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). This program provides grants to assist States in operating statewide VR programs, each of which is an integral part of a statewide workforce development system.  State VR programs provide VR services for individuals with disabilities, consistent with their strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities, interests, and informed choice, so that they may prepare for and engage in competitive integrated employment or supported employment and achieve economic self-sufficiency.  To be eligible for the VR program, individuals must have a physical or mental impairment that results in a substantial impediment to employment and who require and can benefit from VR services to achieve employment and maximize career goals.     What is FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their childrenā€™s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student (ā€œeligible studentā€). The FERPA statute is found at 20 U.S.C. Ā§ 1232g and the FERPA regulations are found at 34 CFR Part 99.

This is especially true for Black borrowers, who are among those most negatively affected by student loans ā€” due, in large part, to systemic racism, the inequitable distribution of wealth in this country, a stratified labor market, and rising college costs. And whether by willful intent or gross negligence, many of those engaged in this policy debate overlook the compounding effect of racism and how it specifically impacts Black borrowers.
