Beyond Medicine: The Science and Art of Healing with Professor Paul Dieppe

Modern medicine is extraordinarily good at diagnosing and treating disease. But is treating disease the same thing as healing? In this episode, Dr Shami speaks with Professor Paul Dieppe, physician, researcher and author of Healing and Medicine: A Doctor’s Journey Toward Their Integration. After a distinguished career in academic medicine and rheumatology, Paul's curiosity increasingly turned towards something conventional medicine often struggles to define: healing. Their conversation explores the idea that healing may involve much more than the treatment itself. The relationship between doctor and patient, feeling heard and understood, expectation, belief, meaning, intention and the context in which treatment is delivered may all influence the experience and potentially the outcome of healthcare. They explore the fascinating science of placebo and nocebo and ask whether we have underestimated the biological power of the therapeutic relationship. Why We Need to Play Again: Movement as Medicine with Darryl Edwards

What if the secret to becoming healthier wasn’t exercising harder but learning how to play again? In this episode of the Six Hats Podcast, Dr Shami sits down with Darryl Edwards, movement coach, author, international speaker and founder of the Primal Play Method®. Darryl’s own story is remarkable. After spending almost two decades working in investment-banking technology and living an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, he began rethinking his relationship with exercise and movement. That journey eventually led him to create Primal Play, an approach that combines movement, play and functional fitness to make physical activity something we actually want to do. Today, his work brings together exercise physiology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience and the psychology of play. His work has also expanded into lifestyle medicine, healthy ageing and exercise oncology. In this conversation, we explore why so many of us struggle to exercise consistently, what modern life has taken away from the way humans naturally move, and why joy may be one Why adults stop playing and what we lose when we do Connect with Darryl here: https://www.primalplay.com/ Disclaimer: The content in the podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Is Obesity Really About Willpower? The Hidden Biology We've Been Missing with Dr Adaure Osuji

Obesity has long been explained as a simple equation of eating too much and exercising too little. But what if that story doesn't explain everyone's biology? In this episode, Dr Shami sits down with physician and author Dr Adaure Osuji to discuss her thought-provoking new book, Obesogenic: The Quiet Biology Driving Black Obesity in a World Engineered to Make Everyone Sick. Together, they explore emerging ideas about insulin, metabolism, genetics, the microbiome, and why conventional models of obesity and type 2 diabetes may not fully explain what we see in every patient. Dr Osuji shares why she believes hyperinsulinaemia deserves far greater attention, introduces the concept of the "Glucose Hyper-Responder," and discusses how these ideas could influence the way we think about prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This conversation is not simply about weight loss. It's about understanding the biology that may sit upstream of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many other chronic conditions, while recognising where current evidence is strong and where further research is still needed. Whether you're a healthcare professional or someone interested in understanding metabolic health more deeply, this episode will challenge you to think differently.   Disclaimer: The content in the podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
