    What does Mormonism teach about grace, works, salvation, and the afterlife? In the final theological installment of our series on Mormonism, Jack examines the LDS plan of salvation and its emphasis on faithfulness, ordinances, covenants, temple rites, and enduring to the end. He contrasts this system with the biblical doctrine that sinners are justified entirely by the finished work of Jesus Christ.     The Shadows and the Shepherd: Reflections on Psalm 23:4

    Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” In this episode, Jack considers one of the most familiar and comforting phrases in Scripture: “the valley of the shadow of death.” Life can move quickly from green pastures to dark valleys, but Psalm 23 reminds us that the believer is never abandoned there. The Good Shepherd is with His sheep. He guides, protects, corrects, comforts, and leads them safely through. Through personal reflection, the story of R.F. Gates, and the remarkable survival story of Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance, this episode points us to the comfort of Christ’s presence in suffering and the hope of His victory over death. Because Jesus laid down His life for the sheep and rose again, death has lost its sting. For the Christian, death may cast a shadow, but it cannot destroy.     This conversation explores the LDS view of the Fall, sin, atonement, grace, works, assurance, and eternal progression. Mormonism often uses Christian language, but the meanings behind those words are radically different from historic biblical Christianity. Jack and Grayson compare Mormonism’s teaching on Adam and Eve, original sin, ordinances, temple rites, baptism for the dead, and exaltation with the biblical gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
