    Paul's First Missionary Journey

    In Acts 14 we read of Paul and Barnabas's first missionary journey through Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe—cities in the territory of Galatia. We witness the apostles facing life-threatening persecution yet refusing to let fear stop them from sharing the gospel. The healing of a lame man in Lystra becomes a pivotal moment, revealing how the Holy Spirit helps us see the invisible people around us—those we pass daily without truly noticing. The townspeople's response is fascinating: they mistake Paul and Barnabas for the Greek gods Zeus and Hermes, based on a well-known poem by Ovid about gods visiting in human form. This cultural context shows us that people are desperately searching for good news, but often settle for counterfeit versions that require less of them. The message challenges us profoundly: our discomfort should never stop the gospel. Are we more concerned about how people see us than about their eternal destiny? Paul's willingness to return to the very cities that tried to kill him demonstrates a radical commitment we're called to emulate. Most significantly, Paul's first sermon declares the revolutionary truth that through Jesus alone comes forgiveness of sins—something the law of Moses could never fully provide. This message spread like wildfire because ordinary people couldn't keep quiet about what Jesus had done for them. We're challenged to recognize that the gospel is inherently offensive because it demands a response. There's no neutral ground when confronted with Jesus—our silence is actually a 'no.' The call for us today is clear: stop trying to earn God's love through performance, dig deep roots in our relationship with Him, and let the natural fruit of that relationship overflow to others around us.

    The Church Prays for Peter

    No prison, no persecution, and no political power can stop what God intends to accomplish. We witness the martyrdom of James, one of Jesus' closest disciples, followed immediately by Peter's miraculous prison escape—all while the early church prays earnestly for their brother. They didn't treat prayer as a last resort when human solutions failed; they recognized it as their first and best response to impossible circumstances. Meanwhile, King Herod's dramatic demise serves as a stark reminder that human power, no matter how impressive or intimidating, ultimately answers to divine authority. The recurring refrain throughout Acts—that the word of God continued to spread and flourish—becomes even more remarkable when we consider the context: believers were being imprisoned, killed, and scattered, yet the gospel advanced unstoppably. This passage invites us to examine our own response to difficulty: Do we retreat into self-sufficiency, or do we lean into prayer and community? Do we believe that God's purposes can truly overcome every barrier in our lives?

    The Growing Church in Antioch

    What happens when persecution meets the power of the Holy Spirit? In Acts 11:19-30, we discover something remarkable: the early church didn't break under intense suffering—it multiplied. Beginning with Stephen's martyrdom in Acts 7, believers were scattered across the ancient world, yet instead of hiding in fear, they carried the gospel message everywhere they went. When famine threatened, they didn't hoard resources but generously gave to their brothers and sisters in Judea. We're called to recognize the Spirit's work around us, to allow our hardships to be transformed by God's presence, and to trust that every season—mountaintop or valley—can display the unstoppable gospel through our lives.

    In Acts chapter 11, where we witness a pivotal moment in church history: the realization that the Holy Spirit is available to all people, not just the Jewish believers.     The Lord Chooses Saul
