Become A Trauma Informed Coach

Lindsay Poelman

Are you a coach who's afraid to use the "T" word (Trauma) on your calls? Or you that trauma is a thing, that it happens, but not much more (because you’re not sure if you want to know more)? If any of this resonates (or you just want to know more about how, as coaches, we can support clients carrying trauma), this podcast is for you. Bringing our lack of understanding into the light is necessary to support ourselves—and clients—during calls. Now coach, I am NOT HERE to induce fear or paralysis in your coaching—bleh. I am here to help you 1) see what you’re potentially not seeing, 2) reaffirm 10000% that you absolutely can do something about it, and 3) reinforce the notion that we all start somewhere (it’s ok to be where you’re at right now)! There is SO MUCH you can do to support clients carrying trauma—as well as understanding the limitations we have as coaches—so that they can receive the care they are in search of. I believe that being Trauma-Informed is an Essential Standard of Care for every coach in the coaching industry. I have a vision of every coach being Trauma-Informed.

Nurses Get Assaulted More Than Police Officers. One ICU Leader Is Changing That.

What happens when a nurse with 36 years at the bedside, 22 of them in the ICU, certifies to teach other nurses to feel their feelings and complete stress response cycles?  In this episode I sit down with Terri Petroff, an ICU nurse leader who came through The Fluent Human Certification™ and is now building an evidence-based program to reduce nurse burnout from the inside out. Terri has spent her career being with people on the worst day of their lives. She has also watched what that costs the people giving the care. We get honest about the parts of nursing nobody trains you for. The death and dying. The violent procedures. The moral distress. The workplace violence that Terri says makes nurses more likely to be assaulted than police officers, most of it going unreported because nurses are taught it is "just part of the job." For 22 years Terri was told to never process any of it. What she learned is the thing so many high-capacity, caring people learn too late: what you do not process shows up sideways. This is a conversation about what it actually looks like to get trauma-informed and put it to work. Terri walks through the tools from the certification that landed for her: the four lenses, the trauma responses (freeze, fawn, flight, fight, and frenzy) and how each one shows up on a real shift, and the self-compassion work that lets a nurse who made a med error write a new story instead of carrying the shame. She shares the 30-second pause her team takes after a code, the end-of-shift huddle where nurses name what was hard and who they are grateful for, and the moment she watched an entire unit exhale. Then she tells us what she is building. An eight-week cohort program for bedside nurses with validated pre and post stress measures, designed to prove it lowers perceived stress, protects nurses, and saves hospitals the roughly 83,000 dollars it costs to replace a single nurse. Terri did not just take the certification. She is running the experiment to show it works. If you have ever thought "that sounds great, but I am too exhausted to add one more thing," this episode is for you. Terri's answer to that is the whole point: you do not get your energy back by resting harder. You get it back by learning to process what you are carrying. Her closing line is the reason this show exists. "To be fully human is to be fully fluent in all of those emotions." What you will learn Why the tools nurses actually need are science-based, not "just go do more yoga"The real scope of workplace violence against nurses, and what prevention can look like (risk scoring, safety huddles, staffing two nurses to a room)The five trauma responses and how freeze, fawn, flight, fight, and frenzy show up on a shiftHow a 30-second pause after a code and a simple end-of-shift huddle change a whole unit's nervous systemWhy "I am too exhausted for coaching" is the exact reason to startWho the certification is really for, and how to know if that is youTimestamps 00:00 Meet Terri Petroff00:57 Nursing roots and burnout01:36 ICU trauma and COVID04:04 The reality of workplace violence against nurses06:02 Preventing nurse assaults08:12 What landed most from the certification11:06 Debriefs, the pause, and gratitude huddles15:32 The identity and agency shift17:57 The eight-week nurse program she is building20:09 "I am too exhausted for coaching"24:23 Who should get certified25:33 Final message and where to find Terri27:06 ClosingSupport the show Lindsay’s current program offerings: Feeling the pull towards a new career? The 5 Hidden Layers Running Your Life (and How to Read Them)

Ever feel like you're doing all the right things but still stuck in the same patterns? In this trauma-informed masterclass, former CPA turned coach Lindsay Poelman walks you through the five hidden layers that quietly run your life beneath the surface: conditioning, nervous system, story, wounding, and inheritance. If mindset work, journaling, or even therapy have left you feeling like something is still missing, this episode is the missing piece. You'll learn how your subconscious, not your willpower or discipline, is actually steering the ship, and why lasting change starts with becoming fluent in the language of your own body. Lindsay breaks down what each layer sounds like, what it looks like day to day, and the research-backed long-term effects of ignoring your body's cues, from burnout and anxiety to chronic stress, rumination, and shame. Then she shows you the way back: naming your layers, meeting them with a curious, compassionate "gardener" approach, and doing the nervous-system-based, neuroscience-backed, trauma-informed work that actually holds. This is nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, subconscious reprogramming, and trauma education brought together in one place, for every human, not just coaches. Betrayal here, there, and everywhere

Lindsay Poelman returns to reintroduce the show as a brand new season and open a new series on betrayal. Drawing from her own story, a high-demand Mormon upbringing, a check-the-box life, and the turning point when her husband disclosed longstanding lies about his porn use, Lindsay names betrayal trauma out loud and explains why it lives underneath so much of the pain women carry and cannot name. Using Jennifer Freyd's definition of betrayal trauma, Lindsay walks through the many places betrayal shows up: religion and faith transitions, family systems that silence the victim to protect the family's image, institutions and medical gaslighting (including women dismissed around perimenopause), partnership and infidelity, and the self-betrayal we learn young in order to survive. Across almost a decade of coaching, she has seen the same pattern again and again, and the same way through: rebuilding self-trust, reconnecting to the body's felt sense and intuition, and using community to dissolve shame. She closes with the heart of her work: your body is not the problem, it is the solution. Learn more inside The Fluent Human course and certification, her live community calls, and her limited one-on-one coaching. What you'll learn in this episode What betrayal trauma actually is, defined through the research of Jennifer FreydWhy betrayal is not only about marriage, and the shape it takes underneath religion, family, institutions, and partnershipHow medical gaslighting works, and why so many women (especially around perimenopause) were told it was all in their headsWhat self-betrayal and self-abandonment are, why they were once a survival strategy, and how to tell if the pattern is still running your lifeWhy rebuilding self-trust and reconnecting to your intuition is the difference between staying stuck and moving forwardHow the body holds truth, keeps score, and can sense when something is off, even when everything looks fine on the outsideWhy community and being witnessed dissolve shame faster than trying to heal alone Key concept: What is betrayal trauma? Betrayal trauma, as defined by Jennifer Freyd, is the deep emotional and psychological injury that happens when a person you trust, love, or depend on for safety and survival breaks that trust in a major way. Lindsay expands it into a working definition for everyday life: betrayal is being told to trust something that was not safe. Once you see it that way, you start to notice how many places you were told exactly that. The many faces of Betrayal

For centuries, we’ve been told to move on, stay quiet, be grateful, or trust the system—whether that system was religious, medical, familial, or societal. But what if the very institutions we were taught to trust are where the deepest betrayals took root? In this raw, deeply personal episode, I walk you through a trauma-informed lens of betrayal in all its forms—and why naming it is not "playing the victim," but a powerful act of nervous system repair and reclamation. We explore: 🔥 What betrayal trauma actually is (and why it lives in the body)💔 The hidden cost of religious, medical, and societal betrayals😶‍🌫️ How women especially are conditioned to betray themselves to belong🧠 What neuroscience and trauma research say about repair, healing, and hope💡 Why witnessing ruptures is sacred—not shameful🌿 My own story of healing from personal and systemic betrayalsIf you've ever felt dismissed, gaslit, silenced, or ashamed for being too sensitive or too much—this one is for you.
