    A Christmas war movie that's actually more about coming of age in the shadow of death, Keith Gordon's A Midnight Clear casts Ethan Hawke as the leader of a squad of at-the-time rising stars, in what might be the first great performance of his career. It's also the first showcase of his natural ability with voiceover, most famously effective in First Reformed.     Your hosts survive a plane crash in the Andes, trying to make meagre rations last without resorting to eating our special guest Conor O' Donnell (The B-Side) and get a gruesome camp fire story from the host of Filmmaker Magazine's Back to One podcast, Peter Rinaldi.     Ethan Hawke is floppy-haired perfection in this imperfect one crazy night movie, that turned out to be a little too crazy for our filmmaker sibling guests, the Shakespeare Sisters (Soundtrack to Sixteen, Much Ado). Topics include the one time Ethan Hawke was a teen movie lead, disagreements on Hawke's chemistry with co-star Terri Polo, and why for our guests, Hawke's character's conniving brother played by Brian McNamara is the more charming of the two.     We’re kicking off our journey into Ethan’s oeuvre with the film that made Hawke the cinematic face of Generation X, and for the next few years, a pin-up leading man. It’s a testament to Hawke’s then-emerging star power, pop cultured charisma, and slacker hotness, that the character of Troy Dyer, an uncompromisingly self-absorbed, “24-hour-a-day taste fascist” remains one of his most enduring and fondly remembered.
