E3: Martial Arts Trained Health & Fitness Coach, Callum Perera: Understanding where our self-expectations come from and mastering the art of teaching.

On Press Play this week we meet Callum Perera. Callum began his training in Martial Arts when he was eight years old, which led him to the Army Reserves, to running his own gym, to a degree in Philosophy, and the list goes on! He’s now a successful business owner and takes a holistic approach to personal training and fitness. We discuss his outlook on fitness, how to truly teach successfully, the power of language, embracing the ability to surrender, and getting to the truth behind why we really desire to be fitter and healthier. It’s a truly fascinating conversation that is eye-opening, complex, unconventional, and inspiring all at the same time.  Callum always surprises me, he continues to leave me with little nuggets of wisdom that I find myself thinking about weeks after our conversation. Sometimes more than a year later something will just click, and I'll have an ‘a-ha I get it now!’ moment! I am so happy to be able to share this conversation with you all. I hope you enjoy it just as much as we did! S x Topics: What is the biggest lesson you learned from Martial Arts? Where did your fascination with learning begin? How do you find a balance between body and mind? Is there a separation between the two? What made you move away from ‘Personal Training’ and the ‘Fitness Industry? The power of language and how words can be limiting. Understanding why we all desire a healthy body and the reason behind wanting to be ‘fit’ or look a certain way. Tackling our inner demons and how this limits our own happiness. How has studying philosophy impacted your outlook on life and fitness? How do you train your clients now and manage your business? What it means to surrender and find peace in letting go. Is there an optimal way to meditate?

E2. Dr Brooke Starling: The real causes of physical pain in the body and how trauma affects the nervous system.

On Press Play this week we speak to the founder and director of Star Osteo and Wellness, Brooke Starling. Brooke is an Australian-trained osteopath, with a Health Sciences degree, majoring in Nutrition and Family, Society and Health. She’s worked in regional Victoria, London and many Aboriginal communities, with a natural ability to connect with and understand a patient’s health. What drew me to Brooke was her holistic approach to Osteopathy. Her focus is to get to the route behind the physical problem, which isn’t often what her patients expect it to be. Brooke goes into how she discovered her career path, and her ability to trust her intuition when it comes to assessing each person she meets. She discusses how the body responds to and remembers trauma, and how her own difficult past led her to where she is today. Brooke’s passion is to help people get to the true source of their pain, creating a happier and healthier lifestyle for her clients moving forward. I absolutely loved everything about this conversation. Enjoy!! Topics: What is the main difference between Osteopathy and Physiotherapy? What made you branch out on your own and begin your own practice? What does it mean to look at the body holistically? How the Morrisby Test (Career Path Quiz) led to a 99% score in problem solving. What it means to follow your intuition and trust the energy you experience. What is the experience from start to finish for a client visiting an Osteopath? How do you deal with an emotionally demanding job? Fear of chasing your passion. What is your advice for dealing with self doubt? How does emotional abuse affect the nervous system? How do you help your body to recover from trauma? What does it mean to breathe optimally and why is this important? What do you do when you are having an off day? How does your past trauma affect your relationships today? How do you prioritise self care in your life and manage your autoimmune disease?
