    Ep. 18 Dave Derby

Dave Derby is an American singer-songwriter, bassist, and producer most famous for fronting the indie rock band The Dambuilders. Known for his melodic songwriting and distinctive bass lines, Derby has remained a steady figure in the alternative and indie scenes for over three decades.Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Derby began playing in the late 1980s. He co-founded The Dambuilders with guitarist Eric Masunaga and bassist Tryan George. The group relocated to Boston in 1990, where they became a staple of the city's thriving alternative rock scene alongside bands like the Pixies and Lemonheads. With the addition of violinist Joan Wasser (later known as Joan As Police Woman), and drummer Kevin March, the band developed a unique, violin-driven power-pop sound. Derby served as a primary songwriter and lead vocalist, leading the band through several major label releases on Elektra Records, including their most successful album, Encendedor (1994), which featured the modern rock hit "Shrine."In February, 1996, The Dambuilders opened up for Jeff Buckley in Australia. Beyond performing, Derby has built a successful career composing for film and television. His work includes music for the film Who's the Caboose? and the Disney hit Hannah Montana: The Movie. He also wrote the theme song for the popular political podcast and radio show The Majority Report with Sam Seder.Today, Derby continues to produce and release music through his collective Gramercy Arms, maintaining his reputation as a "songwriter's songwriter" within the New York indie community. 3. Ep. 17.1 Gene Bowen

    APR 15

    Ep. 17.1 Gene Bowen

Part 1 of 2I am thrilled and humbled to have the one and only Gene Bowen on Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story. Gene was Jeff’s tour manager from 1994-1997. After Buckley died, Bowen endeavored to start a nonprofit, Road Recovery, to educate people about addiction and other adversities in hopes of helping them find their way towards a healthy and happy future. He looked to publicize the many strengths and resources available from the music industry and the mental health field. With the support of Sony Music Entertainment and Dreamworks Records, as well as health professionals, Gene founded the Road Recovery Foundation in 1998. Bowen oversees the charity’s after school Trax Programs throughout statewide Youth Clubhouses, which are sanctioned by New York State and funded by the US Dept of Justice, to provide youth with engaging mentoring and creative activities for their recovery from personal adversities. For their innovative non-profit services to support youth, Bowen with Road Recovery, has been awarded the President’s Award for Innovative Advocacy, the Mona Mansell Award by The Freedom Institute, and the Sunlight of the Spirit Award by the ASCAP Foundation.  28 years later he is going strong. Thanks Gene, Jack Bookbinder, Tawny Lara and everyone at  Road Recovery who is trying to make tomorrow brighter than today! 4. Ep. 16 Todd Horton

    Ep. 16 Todd Horton

Today’s guest Todd Horton has a sweet and funny Jeff Buckley story for you. Todd is a great trumpeter and he actually met Jeff a couple of times back in the early 90s in the lower east side of New York City. Additionally, he was a witness and participant to the birth of multiple national acts such as Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors and Norah Jones, not to mention the Jeff Buckley Band . This is a fun story so come along with me and Todd as we see what he, and others, were like in the 90's! A lifelong musician and lover of all things audio, Todd Horton was born in Ithaca, NY in 1969.Over the past 35 years, as a trumpet and flugelhorn player, Todd worked with artists and bands in multiple genres including the Spin Doctors, Buddy Miles, Aaron Neville, Ani Difranco, Richard Bona and many others. As a studio musician he worked in famed New York studios such as Electric Ladyland, Avatar, Sear Sound and Looking Glass, while also composing, performing and recording with his own jazz fusion group “D BOP.” In the 1990s, he produced albums at Phillip Glass’s Looking Glass Studios where he learned the ropes from in-house engineers and producers, eventually establishing his own boutique record label Soulsearch Music. In 2010, from his home studio, Todd came up with the idea of a modular microphone stand he dubbed the “Mic Tree” that would aid in tracking drums in a limited space. He spent the better part of the next ten years designing and developing his stand ideas, building prototypes and endeavoring to eliminate as many of the most common issues with regular microphone stands as possible. In 2021, satisfied he had a product that improved the lives of musicians, engineers and producers, he began building custom stands out of his workshop for engineers and musicians needing a space saving solution for multi-mic’ing drums, pianos and anything else. Demand grew and Base 4 Stands was born. https://base4stands.com Theme Music: Spy - Whatsa (Todd's Band)Astrometrix - Section 31 (featuring Todd) Last Goodbye - Jeff BuckleyPS I Love You - Norah Jones and Todd Horton "Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story” is created, recorded, edited and produced by Jeff Haley. My guest today is Nathan Larson. He is an bassist, guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and accomplished film composer. Born in Maryland in 1970, He came up in the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene as the original bassist for the punk band Swiz from 1987-1989. Afterwards, Larson gained prominence in the 1990s as the lead guitarist for the influential alternative rock band Shudder to Think, greatly contributing to their distinctive sound on the albums Pony Express Record and 50,000 BC. Following the band's hiatus, he released a transcendent solo album, Jealous God in 2001. Ep. 12 Adam Bork

My guest today is one of my oldest friends, Adam Bork . We grew up together in Austin, Texas in the 80’s. In 1986 I took Adam to see Jazz innovator Stanley Jordan at the University of Texas. Being an impressionable teenager and burgeoning guitarist, this led Adam to create his own unique guitar style. In the 90’s Adam was a very successful performer, playing in many of Austin’s greatest clubs and winning accolades under the moniker, “Earthpig”.In November, 1994, Adam, me and our friends Chris Searles and Seela Misra were booked to open for Jeff Buckley at the iconic Electric Lounge. In addition to music, Adam is an accomplished photographer and visual artist.  In the 2010s Adam had a Food Truck in Marfa, Texas which gained a lot of national attention : Food Shark.  A program note: most of the photos and videos in today’s video podcast (on YouTube) were taken by Adam.Check out his work here:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/marfadome/ https://www.instagram.com/ghostoffoodshark https://youtube.com/@marfadome Songs:Earthpig - Trek in the HighlandsAfter HoursRockstarCascading TelevisionsFinal DefeatStanley Jordan - Eleanor RigbyJeff Buckley - Dream Brother (Live at Electric Lounge 11/29/1994)Black Sabbath - SupernautNusrat Fateh Ali Khan-Ye Jo Halka Halka Soroor Hai “Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story” is created, recorded, edited and produced by Jeff Haley.
