98: Filipino furniture that tells our stories ft. Ysla Island Living at Manila FAME

What if the furniture we bring into our homes could tell the stories of where we came from? Not just through how it looks, but through the materials, craftsmanship, and little details we might not even notice at first. In this episode of Mindset Magic with Mika, I'm at Manila FAME with my Interior Designer friend Marlo from Ysla Island Living, getting to know the stories behind their Ortelanu Collection — a Filipino furniture collection inspired by Philippine farming and culture. And let me tell you, there's so much more happening behind these pieces than I expected. From a dining table with farmers carved into its legs to the creative challenges of working with artisans, we're talking about what it takes to bring meaningful furniture design to life. We talk about: The inspiration behind Ysla Island Living's Ortelanu CollectionHow Philippine farming and Filipino culture influence furniture designThe Apag dining table and the stories hidden in its detailsFilipino craftsmanship, furniture materials, and creative techniquesThe challenges of translating ambitious design ideas into actual furnitureWorking with Filipino artisans on unfamiliar designsWhy comfort and function still matter in highly creative furnitureWhat makes a furniture piece feel personal instead of just beautiful What I loved about this conversation is how it reminded me that interior design isn't only about choosing things that look good together. It's also about the stories we carry, the memories we associate with objects, and the environments we create around ourselves. And seeing those ideas come to life through Filipino craftsmanship makes them even more meaningful. 97: when interior design becomes an act of service with UP BSID 2027 Gitling advocacy project

What if being a good Interior Designer wasn't just about making spaces beautiful, but understanding the people who actually live in them? In this episode of Mindset Magic with Mika, I'm meeting the next generation of BS Interior Design students behind Project Gitling: Kaagapay sa Pagbatid, an advocacy project supporting Margaretha Home for the Blind in Quezon City. Having once helped lead a UP Interior Design advocacy project myself, it felt surreal to see the next generation continuing that tradition. And what I loved most was hearing how they're approaching design beyond aesthetics. Because when you're designing for people with visual impairments, you start asking different questions about what makes a space accessible, comfortable, and meaningful. We talk about: The next generation of UP Diliman BS Interior Design students and their advocacy workThe story behind Project Gitling and Margaretha Home for the BlindAccessible interior design, tactile details, and sensory experiencesWhy good design starts with understanding people's everyday livesWhat students discover when they bring their design skills into a real community projectHow you can support Project GitlingWhy I believe interior design has always been an act of service Whether you're an Interior Design student figuring out what kind of designer you want to become, or someone who believes our spaces should support the way we live, I hope this conversation gives you something to think about. Because the real impact of a space isn't always something you can capture in a beautiful photograph. 🤍 SUPPORT PROJECT GITLING – Follow Project Gitling's official Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts for project updates, merchandise, and ways to support their advocacy. https://facebook.com/upbsid2027 https://instagram.com/upbsid2027 https://tiktok.com/@upbsid2027 https://bit.ly/GitlingDonationForm Space Fix Ebook → https://bit.ly/SPACE-FIX Main Character Energy thru Space → https://bit.ly/MCE-SPACE Full Interior Design Services → https://bit.ly/IDR-MIKA Book an Interior Design Consultation → idr.mikadoria@gmail.com Instagram → https://instagram.com/mikadoria

96: what is your space reinforcing? let's talk about money, mirrors + feng shui

If you've been doing the inner work, setting bigger goals, or trying to become more intentional about the life you're building, here's a question we don't ask enough: What is your environment reinforcing every day? This episode came from a recent yaman session that got me thinking about Feng Shui, wealth, and the way we arrange the things around us. Because when people talk about attracting money through their space, the conversation can quickly become: Where's my wealth corner? What should I put there? But I found myself asking something else. Where are you actually building the wealth you want? If that's your desk, your home office, or the laptop you work from every day, I'm interested in what that environment is supporting. We talk about: Feng Shui for money and wealth corners why I'd look at where you spend your time before focusing only on symbolic placement what your desk and workspace are reinforcing every day why I started intentionally surrounding myself with things that actually matter to me supporting abundance vs. simply looking wealthy why I don't like mirrors reflecting clutter what mirrors visually repeat in a room mirror placement around doors and windows command position and why being able to see the door matters to me how small environmental choices can make the life you're building easier to keep showing up for I'm not a Feng Shui expert, and this isn't meant to be a traditional Feng Shui lesson. I'm exploring where these ideas overlap with something I've become increasingly interested in as an interior designer: Your space isn't just a reflection of who you are. It's one of the environments in which you repeatedly practice being that person. So maybe the question isn't only: “What should I put in my home to attract what I want?” Maybe it's: “Does the environment I live in every day actually support the person who can create it?” Space Fix Ebook → https://bit.ly/SPACE-FIX Main Character Energy thru Space → https://bit.ly/MCE-SPACE Full Interior Design Services → https://bit.ly/IDR-MIKA Book an Interior Design Consultation → idr.mikadoria@gmail.com Instagram → https://instagram.com/mikadoria

95: you’ve changed but has your environment changed with you?

If you've been doing the inner work but something about your physical environment still feels like an older version of you, this episode is for you. We're talking about what happens when you've changed internally - your mindset, habits, goals, identity - but your space hasn't quite caught up yet. I experienced this myself while studying Interior Design and still sharing a room with my sisters. I was figuring out who I wanted to become while living in a space that couldn't always support the routines and habits I was trying to build. And it made me realize something: Your environment isn't just where your life happens. It's also rehearsing the way you live. We talk about: what happens when your space still reflects a version of you you've outgrownwhy changing your identity doesn't mean buying an entirely new lifethe everyday friction your environment can create around your habitsmy Release, Support, Rehearse frameworkwhat to release when you're entering a new chaptercreating more support for the habits and routines you actually wantthe difference between a home that looks rich and one that supports abundancewhy you don't need to wait for your dream home to start changing your environmentthree questions to ask when your space no longer feels aligned with your life If you've been thinking, “I've changed so much… bakit parang hindi sumabay yung space ko?” this episode might change what you start noticing around you. 94: what makes a space memorable? lessons from Manila Interior Design Summit 2026 and Zaha Hadid Architects

If you've ever looked at a beautiful interior or building and wondered why some spaces stay with you while others are easy to forget, this episode is for you. Last year at the Manila Interior Design Summit (MIDS), I was listening to designers share their experiences. This year, I got to interview them myself. I wanted to ask two things: how do designers develop a point of view that's truly their own? And what makes a space memorable beyond aesthetics? I spoke with established designers and architects, including a representative from Zaha Hadid Architects, about design identity, storytelling, creativity, and the deeper connections people form with spaces. What stayed with me was how their different perspectives kept returning to the human side of design. We talk about: how young interior designers can develop their own design style and point of view why being yourself and taking creative risks matters what makes a space memorable beyond aesthetics the role of storytelling, research, materials, and sensory experience how technology and design identity can work together why architecture becomes part of a city's collective memory advice for Interior Design and Architecture students starting their careers why meaningful design goes beyond making something beautiful If you're still figuring out what kind of designer you want to become — or you've been wondering why certain spaces feel more meaningful than others — this episode might change what you start noticing about design. Because beautiful design can catch someone's attention. But what makes it stay with them? 93: your home might not be too small - it might just be working against you (25 sqm condo transformation)

If your home constantly feels cluttered, cramped, or harder to live in than it should, your first thought might be: “I need more space.” But what if you don't? In this episode, I'm taking you inside Cozy Cove, a 25 sqm condo interior design project in Quezon City and my first full project after becoming a licensed interior designer. Before we started, my client described the space in three words: “Chaotic, undefined, dark.” There wasn't enough distinction between living, dining, sleeping, storage, and everyday routines. So the challenge wasn't simply making a small condo look bigger. It was making 25 square meters support three people's actual lives better. We talk about: why a small home can feel chaotic even when lack of square footage isn't the real problem what “defined spaces” actually means inside a 25 sqm condo how we created more storage without making the home feel heavier designing a proper living, dining, kitchen, laundry, sleeping, and study setup inside one small footprint how we brought more natural light into a previously dark kitchen why I used rounded edges, softer forms, and clear visual cues throughout Cozy Cove why calm isn't just a color palette the difference between making a small space look good and making everyday life easier inside it what happens during the messy middle of an interior design renovation what my client noticed after actually living in the finished home the moment James walked inside and called Cozy Cove the “best hotel ever” what this project taught me about designing an environment around the life someone is actually trying to live Because sometimes what you're craving when you say “I need a bigger home” isn't actually more square meters. You want somewhere for things to go. You want less friction. You want to stop constantly working around your own environment. You want your home to finally make sense for your life. That's what Cozy Cove became.
