    Mothers Are Made, Not Born

    I love this quote by Osho: "The moment a child is born, the mother is also born." But what I now know to be closer to the truth is that mothers are made, not born. For me, motherhood was an intellectual concept until, gradually, it became an experience—and finally, a devotion. Yes, the moments of my children's births were transformative. But each made a new mother of me, over time, not instantly. The protective instinct may arrive immediately.     Graceful Aging? No Thanks.

    Let's talk about the thing nobody wants to talk about — getting older. We're obsessed with longevity, yet terrified of aging. We treat birthdays like funerals. We've absorbed the belief that young is better in every way, and that it's our job to fight getting older with everything we've got. In this episode, I'm pushing back on all of it. I'm not interested in aging gracefully. I'm interested in aging powerfully — and there's a big difference. Because when I look around for inspiration, what I see most is fear. And riding shotgun is always desperation. The problem isn't aging.     Same Mistakes, More Years: Why Experience Isn't Enough

    Julius Caesar said experience is the best teacher. We've repeated this so often it's become unquestionable truth—something we tell ourselves and our children to soothe the pain of our mistakes. But is it actually true? What I've learned from coaching accomplished adults navigating the second half of life—and from my own experience-rich years—is this: experience is necessary, but not sufficient to gain wisdom. We are all surrounded by people who continue to make the same errors and repeat destructive patterns regardless of how well they know better and how deeply they want to change. And sometimes, that person is me. But some of us are less guilty than others. These are the people who know how to transform experience into wisdom—and it comes down to a single practice: reflection.
