  4. A Soft Place to Land with Melissa Woody, LCSW, SEP, RYT

    May 5

A Soft Place to Land with Melissa Woody, LCSW, SEP, RYT

In this episode, Emily sits down with somatic therapist Melissa Woody (LCSW, SEP) to explore what it really means to move from survival into connection. Melissa shares how her own experience with burnout and illness forced her to redefine “enough” and reconnect with herself beyond her work. Melissa and Emily discuss protective patterns, unearthing what they are, how they’ve kept us safe, and how they might be keeping us from fully living. Melissa shares what somatic experiencing is and how it supports healing through an invitation to slow down, tune in, and build a sense of safety from within. She also shares the importance of redefining “enough” for yourself and simple, practical ways to build nervous system regulation and connection. This conversation is a gentle but powerful reminder: healing doesn’t require doing more; it often asks us to do less, with more intention. Thoughts to Sit With:  “Protective patterns may be what kept us alive, or they kept us in belonging, or relationally safe, but they might also keep us from living fully now.” “We have to have compassion and appreciation for ourselves, what we’ve carried, how long we’ve carried it, and how we survived it.” “Prolonged stress and trauma don’t cause autoimmune disorders or chronic illnesses. It helps create the right conditions for these things to express or reveal themselves.” “Simple isn’t sexy, but it is effective.” “If you think you’ve slowed down enough, slow down even more. This is tough, because our society doesn’t reward slowing down.” Melissa Woody is a psychotherapist (LCSW), SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) and yoga teacher located in Asheville, NC with a profound appreciation for the human condition and belief in our inherent resilience. She combines her own lived experience and clinical training and skills to help folks move from patterns of protection (that may have been helpful and even kept us alive at one point, but don’t serve us so well anymore and prevent us from actually living) to patterns of inner and interconnection. While she knows "nervous system regulation" is trendy right now, she has spent years training, studying and applying how this can support us as it relates to recovery from chronic (mental and physical) symptoms. She believes in the benefit of both somatic and cognitive based approaches to address the whole and produce best outcomes as it relates to her client's goals. As a clinical social worker, she also approaches therapy through an intersectional socio-cultural lens, recognizing that individual's experiences are also shaped by a complex web of identities, systems, and power dynamics. She works with her clients as a collaborative guide to co-create an experience where no matter who you are or what you have gone through, you are invited to (re)discover self-trust, confidence, belief in your wholeness and own embodied wisdom. Silencing Your Inner Mean Girl with Kylie Lambert, LCSW

In this episode, Emily is joined by therapist and Self-Compassion Educator, Kylie Lambert. This episode dives deep into the inner “mean girl” many women carry - that critical voice that pushes and shames, convincing us our worth is tied to productivity and others’ opinions of us. Through honest conversation, Kylie and Emily explore how inner dialogue forms, why it’s difficult to release, and what it actually takes to build a kinder relationship with yourself. Kylie shares how self-criticism often disguises itself as motivation, the connection between burnout and resentment, and practical ways to begin practicing self-compassion, even when it feels uncomfortable. Thoughts to Sit With: “People are afraid that if they silence their inner mean girl, they’re not going to be driven and will achieve less.”“When we lean into vulnerability, self-compassion feels easier.” Connect with Kylie:  Kylie Lambert is a licensed therapist, self-compassion coach, and the creator of Silence Your Inner Mean Girl. Mom Rage: The Message in the Meltdown with Nicole McNelis

In this episode, Emily is joined by therapist and Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Nicole McNelis (M.Ed., NCC, LPC, PMH-C) to talk about a topic many mothers experience but rarely discuss openly: mom rage. Nicole explains how maternal rage often grows out of a powerful combination of feelings of powerlessness, injustice, and stress, and why it feels so sudden and overwhelming. Nicole first encountered mom rage during the pandemic while raising young children and navigating the same uncertainty many families faced. What began as a personal realization soon emerged in her work with clients, leading her to explore research and develop ways to help mothers better understand and respond to the intense, emotional moments.  Together, Emily and Nicole explore how mom rage often follows a recognizable cycle: buildup, release, and aftermath, and why recognizing the early signs can be key to managing it in healthier ways. Most importantly, Nicole reframes mom rage not as a failure of motherhood, but as a signal that something deeper needs attention.Thoughts to Sit With:  “Mom rage, when we work with it the right way, can be a catalyst for positive change.“This is not a meltdown, it’s a message.”“Curiosity opens spaces; judgement closes them.”Resources mentioned in this episode: https://www.minnadubin.com/book About Nicole:  Nicole McNelis (M.Ed., NCC, LPC, PMH-C) is a licensed mental health therapist and perinatal mental health counseling specialist.  She is the founder of an award-winning counseling private practice in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – where she also resides with her family.
