    Team USA Wins FIBA Gold! Stewie Shines, Shelton Makes History & Football Return

    Season 8 of Two Gems and a Mic is officially here! Tinesha “The Diva” Mahomes and Linda “LD” Dorsey open Episode 1 by celebrating Team USA’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship. First we head to the U.S. Open. Coco Gauff and Ben Shelton did not bring home the championship trophies, but both gave American tennis fans plenty to celebrate. Coco reached another Grand Slam semifinal, while Shelton became the first Black American man to reach the U.S. Open men’s singles final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Next, the American women overcame an early challenge from France to win 97–79 and capture their fifth consecutive World Cup title. Breanna Stewart delivered when her team needed her most, finishing with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Stewie is not just that girl—she is HER  Then it is time for football! The NFL delivered plenty of excitement, surprises and disappointment. We cannot cover every game, but we are sharing some of the weekend’s biggest highlights, lowlights and early reactions. We also discuss the college football showdown between Texas and No. 1 Ohio State. Texas entered the fourth quarter trailing 23–3 before completing an incredible comeback and winning 24–23.     Team USA experienced three very different performances during group play at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The United States opened with a strong 94–61 victory over China, struggled through a tough 55–52 win against Italy, and then bounced back with a dominant 105–64 victory over Czechia. Is Team USA finally on the right track—or is France ready to get revenge for its heartbreaking one-point loss to the United States in the 2024 Olympic gold-medal game? We also discuss the US Open, where Coco Gauff and Frances Tiafoe are giving American tennis fans plenty to celebrate.
