    Galatians-24: Walk By the Spirit, Part #2 (Galatians 5:19-26)

    MAIN IDEA: Walk by the Spirit. 1) To walk by the Spirit is a command. (v.16a) 2) To walk by the Spirit is a promise. (v.16b) 3) To walk by the Spirit is a conflict. (v.17) 4) To walk by the Spirit is a liberation. (v.18) 5) Walking by the Spirit results in a prevention of the practice of fleshly works. (v.19-21) 6) Walking by the Spirit results in a production of the good fruit of obedience. (v.22-23) 7) Walking by the Spirit means an estimation of your old self and desires as dead.     BIG IDEA: The ruling principle of Christian freedom is always love. 1) What you’ve been called to (Gospel freedom; a freedom that comes through the gospel). (v.13a) 2) Why you’ve been called to it (to serve one another through love— other Christians most specifically, but all people ultimately). (v.13b-15) 3) How you’ve been called to live it out (by walking in dependence on the indwelling Holy Spirit to motivate, guide and empower you).     BIG IDEA: Counterfeit teachers of counterfeit truth will always plague Christ’s Church. * Seven characteristics of the Judaizers (and all false teachers generally): 1) They hinder obedience to the truth. (v.7) 2) They are not of God. (v.8) 3) They contaminate the church. (v.9) 4) They will be judged. (v.10) 5) They persecute true teachers. (v.11a) 6) They obscure the offense of the cross. (v.21-26) 2) The Reason: Those of the Covenant of promise are born according to the Spirit (not according to the flesh). (v.13-16)      a. They received him sacrificially instead of rejecting him scornfully.      b. Now they treat him as an enemy for telling them the truth plainly.  2) How the false teachers relate to the Galatians vs. how Paul relates to them. (v.17-20)      a. They flatter them so that the Galatians may make much of them.     b.     BIG IDEA: All who believe in Christ are part of the same unfolding plan, regardless of nation, gender, or social status. All of you were slaves under the Law. (v.1-3)All of you are sons in Christ. (v.4-7)God not only redeems and adopts you as His children by sending His Son. God also then seals you as His children by sending the Spirit of His Son.The Spirit confirms we are sons of God. (v.6,7a)The Spirit carries us us into our inheritance as sons of God.
