  1. The Southern Baptist Love of the "Antebellum" and A Unique Youth Group - A Conversation with Annette, Part 2

    Episode 5

The Southern Baptist Love of the "Antebellum" and A Unique Youth Group - A Conversation with Annette, Part 2

In this 2-part episode, Violet talks with her childhood friend (and long-lost Amish cousin!) Annette about coming out of Christianity, growing up in Lynchburg, the Falwells and their influence on Lynchburg, mental illness, the Charismatic church, rural life, Jerry Falwell Sr. and his commitment to upholding the white supremacist cisheteropatriarchal Southern "way of life", a unique youth group we attended in high school, theobros, and YWAM (Youth With A Mission). Note: We didn't comment on this in the podcast, but when discussing the commitment to "Southern culture" of Jerry Falwell Sr. and his ilk, it's noteworthy that he designed his church just like one of Thomas Jefferson's plantations. Take a look at the cover art. Episode 6

This Past and Present Darkness, Part 1

Content warning: This episode contains a fair amount of discussion around sexual assault/abuse, including of children in the church, so please care for yourselves if you listen to this, it's a heavy episode 3. In this 2-part episode, Violet and Annette talk demons, spiritual warfare, Frank Peretti, patriarchy, and how sexual abuse and child abuse are enabled by the church. A couple of small corrections: This Present Darkness was published in 1986, not 1989.There are five (five!) God's Not Dead movies. The vibe is this (from Wikipedia):"In the fall of 2013, Josh Wheaton, a college student and evangelical Christian, enrolls in a philosophy class taught by Professor Jeffrey Radisson, a renowned atheist. On the first day, Radisson demands that his students sign a declaration stating "God is dead" in order to bypass what he calls the "tedious" theological debate...Radisson reads a letter from his late mother and is moved to reconcile with Mina. On his way to find Mina, Radisson is struck by a car and fatally injured. A pastor waiting at the intersection tends to Radisson and helps him come clean of his sins and regain his religious faith as he dies." This Past and Present Darkness, Part 2

Content warning: This episode contains a brief reference to childhood sexual assault. There is also (to me) a fun jump scare. I had some troubles with the audio quality on this one so my apologies! In this 2-part episode, Violet and Annette talk demons, spiritual warfare, Frank Peretti, patriarchy, and how sexual abuse and child abuse are enabled by the church.
