The Key of Imagination is dedicated to Rod Serling's masterpiece: The Twilight Zone. But, our podcast will be a little different than other Twilight Zone shows you might have listened to. Research has shown that experiencing awe leads to fuller, more meaningful connections with humanity; it can help push back against depression; and it can improve one's sense of well-being. I've been using the Twilight Zone in my college classrooms for over 20 years for this very purpose. We're going to look for the awe in each episode.     KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Grave #72

    Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Grave.” Pinto Sykes is being carried off to jail, soaked by his own blood, having just been shot by eight of the townsfolk. Who was it that actually got him? We don’t know. But, with his father and sister at his side, he takes his final breath. It’s the end of an era, one that the town is happy to put behind them. That night, Conny Miller (played by Lee Marvin), the man whom they hired to track down and bring Pino to justice, rides back into town, the very same place he grew up–and just in time to learn that the man he had been chasing, Pinto Sykes, is now no more. When Conny enters the saloon for a drink,he learns that Pinto had plenty to say about him, accusations of never actually trying to catch him. But, if Conny comes anywhere near his grave, Pinto will reach out and grab him. And a wager is proposed: a $20 gold piece if Conny visits the grave of Pinto Sykes tonight. The rest of the story, well, that’s legend. In this KOI episode, we’ll try and answer what or who actually kills Conny Miller; we’ll ask if Johnny Rob’s bet is a good one; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a note about when winning is perhaps not so ideal.     KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Mirror #71

    Edit correction: at 08:22 I should have said Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada. Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Mirror.” Ramos Clemente, along with his generals–close friends of his–have just successfully completed a revolution, overthrowing the tyrant leader de Cruz and successfully giving the wonderful people of this country a bright future. However, all is not shiny and new. Some old ideas never quite die, no matter how many bullets you throw at it. When Clemente brings in the former president, de Cruz let’s Ramos in on a few secrets: first, all men who seek power end up in the same position–fearful of the next assassin and revolution; secondly, the mirror that Clemente has hanging on the wall of his chambers was given to him by an old woman who said that it would reveal his assassins. Little by little Clemente begins to find out that the first part of de Cruz’ advice is coming true, but what about the second part? In this episode of KOI: A Twilight Zone Show, we’re going to be discussing the clear parallels that Serling wanted to make with the relationship between the United States and Cuba at the time that this episode aired, specifically including characters that look identical to Fidel Castro and Che Guevara; we’ll attempt to figure out if the mirror is indeed supernatural; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a nod to Serling’s courage in the face of history.     KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - A Game of Pool #70

    Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “A Game of Pool.” Jesse Cardiff, played by Twilight Zone royalty Jack Klugman, carries a very unique burden with him to every pool hall he visits. He knows that he’s the best, but there is one competitor that he can’t beat: James Howard Brown, known to his friends as Fats, played by the incomparable comedian Jonathan Winters. The problem is not that Jesse isn’t good enough; it’s that Fats Brown is no longer with us on Earth, and you can’t defeat a ghost–or can you? On this night, Jesse is going to get a special wish granted. He’s going to play Fats Brown in a game of pool, and the stakes of this match are no less than life or death for Jesse.     Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Passersby.” Lavinia sits on her front porch, mourning the loss of her husband and home. All the while, soldiers march on the road in front of her home, young men from the war between the North and the South in the United States. When a sergeant stops by for a drink of water, she is happy for the company. He provides easy conversation and sweet music from his guitar. But the longer he lingers, the more he finds a bitter heart within the woman of the home.     KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Shelter #68

    Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Shelter.” It’s Dr. Bill Stockton’s birthday, and all of his neighbors and friends have gathered to celebrate. But, when a broadcast comes over the airwaves that unidentified flying objects–not of the little green men kind–have been spotted in the area, everyone panics, all except for Bill, who has spent the last few months building a shelter for just this occasion. And when those same neighbors start to come by to see if they can get their families into the good doctor’s shelter, that’s when harsh words and even fists begin to fly.     KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Arrival #67

    Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Arrival.” A passenger plane lands safely on the runway. Nothing odd about that. However, this plane is carrying a mystery. Namely: it isn’t carrying anyone at all–no bags, no passengers, and no pilots. How did this happen, and where are the passengers? There’s only one man to call to solve this mystery: Grant Sheckly. He hasn’t been beaten on a case yet. But, even Sheckly finds himself at a bit of a loss, along with a nagging feeling like there is something familiar about all of this. But, when she comes across a man, and not just any man, a soldier from the other side–the enemy–they will have to see if they can overcome their impulse to fight in order to find the humanity that binds them together. The Key of Imagination is dedicated to Rod Serling's masterpiece: The Twilight Zone. But, our podcast will be a little different than other Twilight Zone shows you might have listened to. Research has shown that experiencing awe leads to fuller, more meaningful connections with humanity; it can help push back against depression; and it can improve one's sense of well-being. I've been using the Twilight Zone in my college classrooms for over 20 years for this very purpose. We're going to look for the awe in each episode.
