Stop Measuring God by the People Who Hurt You.

Somebody taught you what God's love looks like. A parent, a coach, the kids who mocked you in the hallway — and not all of them got it right. Your picture of God is a collage of every person and moment that shaped you, and some of those pieces came from pain. In Part 2 of The Orphan Cure, Pastor Garrett Black opens Matthew 7:7–11, where Jesus asks, "How much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask?" Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and he came to un-teach the lies pain has taught us. Garrett shares how being the shortest kid in school taught him he had to perform to be accepted, and how he carried that lie straight into his relationship with God. He unpacks the orphan spirit, which wants God's comfort but rejects his correction. Then he walks through three lies Jesus un-teaches: that distance keeps us safe, that we have to approach God as outsiders, and that God must be like the people who let us down. He closes with a simple daily practice of asking, "How much more does my Father love me?" If you've ever felt like you had to earn God's love, or kept your distance from him because someone hurt you, this one's for you. Scripture: Matthew 7:7–11, Colossians 1:15 Axess Church exists to glorify God and make disciples — igniting true passion for Jesus through risk-taking faith.
