    When Your Soul Runs on Empty 5FS-1291 – Wednesday day 5-Minute Fresh Start October 21, 2026  In Psalm 23:2–3, "makes me to lie down" is a Hebrew causative form, which means the Shepherd causes the rest, so that illness, closed door, or sudden stop may not be the devil's attack but God deliberately benching you. He leads you beside "still waters," literally "waters of rest," because He won't restore you in the rapids of constant noise, scrolling, and hurry, and many of us avoid quiet for fear of what we might hear there. "Restores" is shuv, the Old Testament's main word for repentance, and like a "cast" sheep stuck on its back that will die within hours unless the shepherd comes, you can't flip yourself upright with a podcast, routine, or better technique. God's restoration leads you back to the old, proven paths of righteousness "for His name's sake," and the same rest Israel refused in Jeremiah 6:16 is offered again by Jesus in Matthew 11:28–29, but He won't force you to take it. Too often the answer is brutal: we gossip, ghost, and quietly bury our wounded, calling exposure without restoration "holiness," even though Jesus commanded a private conversation aimed at gaining a brother (Matthew 18:15). Paul calls instead for prautēs, a gentleness that is strength under control, the kind that sets the broken bone instead of crushing someone already down, because turning a sinner back saves a soul from death (James 5:19–20). And while you reach for the fallen, Paul says skopeō: keep your own heart in the crosshairs, because the moment you think "I would never do that," you have already started down the same road. The Greek word prosdechomai describes eager, ready waiting, like Simeon standing watch for years until he held the infant Jesus, not a bored passenger checking the clock. This hope is no wishful shrug about the weather; it is a confident expectation of what God has already promised, and the "appearing" Paul describes is the arrival of the true King, Jesus our great God and Savior, who outranks every Caesar, president, and celebrity who ever claimed the spotlight. He backed it up by holding up the calloused hands of a tentmaker who never asked for generosity he wasn't already living. The word "blessed" is makarios, the same deep joy of the Beatitudes, so Jesus promised the giver a richer joy and not a bigger balance, which exposes every prosperity pitch that treats giving like a spiritual investment scheme. Hoarding loves to hide behind the word "wisdom," but a life where blessing pours in and nothing flows out goes as lifeless as the Dead Sea, and a stingy Christian is a contradiction, because the God who gave His only Son produces grace that overflows into cheerful, even hilarious, giving. Most people treat obedience as a cage and rebellion as freedom, but Scripture flips that lie: sin is the chain, and God's "perfect law of liberty" is the key. Hearing truth without acting on it doesn't make you neutral. It makes you a self-deceived spiritual tourist who checks the mirror, sees the mess, and walks away.
