SNAKEFACE: Theatre For Catharsis, Joy and Pain (with Bernadette Fam)

Disclaimer: the podcast episode does contain discussions about sexual violence, racism and systemic violence. In this episode of Queers These Days, I got the opportunity to sit down with director Bernadette Fam (she/her, Gemini sun, Gemini moon, Aries rising) to discuss SNAKEFACE, an intense and powerful queer Black play inspired by the Medusa myth. Bernadette shares her emotional journey in bringing this story to life—exploring themes of identity, destruction and rebirth, and the balance of joy and pain in storytelling. We dive into the challenges of directing difficult themes, the importance of self-care in the creative process, and why valuing joy alongside trauma is essential in black queer narratives. Bernadette reflects on childhood experiences, community engagement, and the impact of lived experience on artistic expression. From silent moments of reckoning to the electrifying energy of performance, this conversation uncovers the deep emotional currents behind SNAKEFACE and the radical power of Black queer storytelling. 🎭 Listen now to hear about: The necessity of valuing queer black joy as much as queer black painCreating safe yet emotionally raw spaces in theatrePersonal growth through destruction and rebirthWhy art is a space for both confrontation and healingHow SNAKEFACE reclaims and reinterprets Medusa’s myth 🔗 Links: Buy tickets to SNAKEFACE hereFollow SNAKEFACE on InstagramFollow Bernadette on InstagramFollow the podcast on Instagram and TwitterFollow host Piper on Instagram and Twitter

When Will You Trans? (with Laura Oris, Rhianne Priyanka and Gabriel Gaston)

In this episode, I’m joined by my incredible friends, Gabs (he/they), Rhianne (they/she/he), and Laura (she/they), as we dive into a conversation that covers everything from astrology to gender identity, relationships, and the complexities of self-expression. We talk about how our astrological signs shape our personalities and how that influences our relationships, and we also get into the messy, beautiful dynamics of polyamory. As we yap on, we talk about the fluidity of gender identity—how we’re perceived by others and the importance of navigating gender expression outside the traditional binaries. It’s an episode full of humour (three Sagittarius placements, hello), personal stories, and shared experiences, including the challenges we all face in a society that doesn’t always get it. We also get into some pretty fun and thought-provoking topics like what colours are rarest in nature, Drake’s lyrics (yes, we go there), prenuptial agreements, the emotional layers that come with marriage and divorce, how we take care of ourselves, hold ourselves accountable and support each other in both our personal and romantic lives. Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did! You can follow Rhianne and Gabs, Champs and Queer Karaoke on Instagram.
