Earlene Fields and Michelle Fields-Goodson - A Mother And Daughter Trace Their Family Roots

Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. The most important family story you’ll ever hear might be sitting in your living room right now, unrecorded. We’re joined by my Aunt Earlene Fields, 89 years young, and her daughter Michelle Fields Goodson for a rare mother-daughter conversation about family legacy, faith, and what it meant to grow up in the American Addition community of Columbus, Ohio. What starts as memories quickly becomes a map for how real people build a lasting impact. Aunt Earlene takes us back to a neighborhood where everyone knew each other, kids played jump rope in the street, and church wasn’t just a Sunday stop, it was the anchor of the community. Michelle reflects on what she understands differently with age: the sacrifices behind a stay-at-home mom who did everything, the power of showing up at the table, and why “peace is more valuable than proving a point” can save relationships for the long haul. If you’re searching for family storytelling, intergenerational wisdom, Black family history in Columbus, Ohio, or practical ways to preserve your heritage, this conversation delivers. We also talk traditions that keep families connected, from Christmas Eve church programs to reunion favorites like dirt cake and garlic bread, plus what it means to pass down resilience, kindness, and love through action as the next generation arrives. When you finish listening, take the challenge seriously: sit down with your elders, ask the questions, and record the stories. Subscribe, share this with someone you love, and leave a review so more families feel inspired to build their legacy. Support the show

City of Refuge Good Life Foundation - Strengthens Families Through Jobs And Support

Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. Ted Murdoch, Executive Director of the City of Refuge Good Life Foundation, and Jackie Flemings, Program Director of Mother’s Cove, talk about what real community impact looks like when you stop naming problems and start building solutions that last. We dig into the biggest needs they see on the ground, including housing insecurity, food insecurity, health care disparities, and the ripple effects that show up later as unemployment, violence, and hopelessness. Ted explains why workforce development is a “first domino” for economic stability and how Skill Builders creates a pathway into skilled trades through a 13-week pre-apprenticeship model. You’ll hear why employers care less about perfect resumes and more about reliability, communication, and showing up ready to learn, plus the practical mindset shifts that help people thrive even when they feel like the outsider on a job site. Jackie breaks down why Mother’s Cove exists and why the stakes are so high: Columbus ranks among the top cities in the country for infant mortality, with Black moms and babies facing the greatest risk. She shares what mothers experience inside the program, from training and resources to something many people are missing right now: a support village built on trust, connection, and consistent care. We also talk about the role of faith in community service, and how leadership can model love without performing religion. If you care about community service, nonprofit leadership, Black maternal health, workforce training, and building a legacy that outlives you, this conversation will give you both hope and next steps. Benji shares the lessons he learned from his father, coaches, competition, victories, and losses. Best of BAB Podcast - Shelbi Toone: How One Young Artist Is Preserving Black History

Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. Shelbi Toone, Community Activist, takes us on a remarkable journey through her evolution as an artist, community organizer, and cultural preservationist in Columbus, Ohio. What began with watching her grandparents honor their elders has blossomed into a multifaceted career dedicated to ensuring Black history and community stories aren't lost to time. Today, as project lead for the Poindexter Village Museum (soon to be Ohio's 59th historical site), Shelbi is creating her most enduring legacy yet – a space that will preserve African American history in Central Ohio for generations to come. Through her inspiring story, we discover that true legacy isn't just about the art created but the platforms built and stories preserved that might otherwise be lost. Growing up as what she calls an "art jock," Shelbi brought unique strengths to her creative pursuits – the teamwork, discipline, and practice ethic from basketball and track meshed perfectly with her artistic talents. While many know her vibrant murals around Columbus, fewer understand the deeper purpose driving her work: creating space for underrepresented artists while preserving cultural narratives. After graduating with her master's degree in 2010 amid economic uncertainty, Shelbi took a leap of faith by starting her own creative services business rather than pursuing traditional employment that didn't align with her passion. This bold move not only launched her career but sparked her commitment to building platforms where other artists could thrive. From founding All People Arts gallery on Columbus' South Side to establishing the Walt Neal Mural League, she's consistently created opportunities specifically for Black artists who historically lacked access to public art commissions. Perhaps most fascinating is the story behind her signature "new peace symbol" and the evolution of her artist name "Peace Shelbi." What began as a personal journey to find peace transformed into a powerful artistic statement that "peace begins with you" – a philosophy she's integrated into virtually every artwork for over a decade.
