    Stop Being the Answer

The skills that make you a successful manager can sometimes become the very things that hold your team back. When you're known as the person who solves problems, makes decisions, and has the answers, it's easy to become the person everyone depends on. But when every challenge comes back to the leader, you don't just create a bottleneck—you can unintentionally create dependency. In this episode of the Say YES Movement Podcast, John and Heather explore one of the most important leadership shifts: moving from Problem Solver to Capability Builder. They discuss why great leaders don't simply provide answers—they develop people who can think, make decisions, exercise judgment, and take ownership. Using the practical OBSERVE → EXPLORE → ACT framework, they share questions leaders can use to turn everyday problems into opportunities for coaching and development. As AI makes information and answers increasingly accessible, the value of leadership may no longer be knowing more than everyone else. It may be helping people think better. Practical Takeaway: The next time someone brings you a problem, resist the urge to immediately solve it. Start with one simple question: "What do you think?" Leadership Challenge: Notice how often you give your team answers this week. Choose one conversation where you coach their thinking instead. The Leadership Shift: Problem Solver → Capability Builder Because if your team can't make decisions without you, you may not have built a high-performing team—you may have built dependency.
