Sonic Session with Ayesha Hameed and Tom Hirst

In the third session of the live Archival Frequencies series, artist Ayesha Hameed and musician Tom Hirst perform their new work ‘We are in flood’ (2024), exploring subaquatic bodies of water as sites of grief, suffering, and kinship. Through these water ecosystems and adjacent worlds, the piece weaves together echoes of voices from past works ‘Black Atlantis: The End of Eating Everything’ and ‘Brown Atlantis Radio’ as Hameed and Hirst continue their explorations of the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the imagined Kumari Kandam, a lost Tamil continent that was the cradle of all human civilisation. An Atlantis before Atlantis. This piece includes music from Bi Kidude, Rabindranath Tagore, Pearl Divers from the Arabian Peninsula, and the voices of Rachel Baker, Lizzie Homersham, Bijan Moosavi, Christian Nyampeta, and Theodor Ringborg. Sonic Session with Tabideee

In this second session of the live Archival Frequencies series, British-Sudanese Civil Engineer and International DJ Tabideee delves into the rich textures of traditional Sudanese sounds, exploring how these elements form the foundation for her love of contemporary electronic music and rave culture. She highlights the role of Sudanese sonic spaces, beyond the Western imagination, and the subcultures within them as vital sites of liberation for women and queer individuals in Sudanese society. Combining digital tracks, cassettes, and samples from her personal archives with ongoing research, her performance is a soundscape of these underrepresented narratives and a love letter to her culture.   All the soundbites in the episode are part of Tabideee’s archival and sonic practice.  Credits: Introduction podcast version: Yahia Saleh Technician live version: Kristian Eliasson Technician live radio: Jonatan Bergsman Postproduction producer: Daniel Säfström Graphic Designer:  Linda Hallstan Additional recording: Kristian Eliasson Concept: Black Archives Sweden Learn more about Tabideee here: https://www.instagram.com/tabideee/ https://www.instagram.com/spaceblack__/?hl=en   Learn more about Black Archives Sweden here: https://www.blackarchivessweden.com/ https://www.instagram.com/blackarchivessweden/ Learn more about Retreat Radio here: https://www.retreatradio.net/ https://www.instagram.com/retreatradio/ The episode is done by Black Archives Sweden in collaboration with Retreat Radio with support from the Swedish Arts Council and Region Skåne.

Sonic Session with DJ Lynnée Denise

What is the significance of Black women pianists in shaping the landscape of Black music? In this live session of Archival Frequencies, DJ Lynnée Denise curates an immersive listening experience that recontextualizes the musical legacies of pianists Roberta Flack, Mary Lou Williams, and Nina Simone. By highlighting their groundbreaking contributions to piano, jazz, and various subgenres of Black music, Denise offers an aural renarrativization, that challenges the gendered narrative that often limits their recognition to just their vocal talents. Denise invites listeners to reconsider the profound significance of these artists, celebrating them not only as singers but as pivotal figures who reshaped the landscape of Black music. All the soundbites in the episode are part of DJ Lynnée Denise’s archival practice. Archival Frequencies: DJ Lynnée Denise

Do we ever think of sampling as an act of archiving? What is Black music? What happens when we migrate with our sounds? What do we do with the sounds of our ancestors echoed between Africa, The Americas, and Europe? When do we speak about the exploitation of Black artists and Black music, about our disappointments? In part two of Black Archives Sweden's podcast, a conversation filled with warmth and emotions, Samuel Girma and DJ Lynnée Denise dig through the crates together: from Lynnée's family's music archive to LA's 80's dance floors to her own scholarship to make sense of the blend of space, Blackness, dj scholarship, archive, and social movements. The following sound bites are used in the episode: Soundbite 1 (intro sound): Ne me quitte pas  (Ain’t got no home: Mapping the migration of Nina Simone in the 1970s-80s) by DJ Lynnée Denise. Soundbite 2:  State Funeral by DJ Lynnée Denise All the soundbites in the episode are part of DJ Lynnée Denise’s archive and archival practice.
