Kevin Coates sit down with Linda Davis, Executive Director of Face Addiction Now (FAN), to talk about how policing in Sterling Heights has changed over the past decade through a more compassionate response to addiction. Linda shares her personal and professional journey, reflecting on her time as a prosecutor and judge when she believed incarceration was the right response to crimes tied to addiction. As her understanding of addiction evolved from a moral failing to a disease that needs treatment, and as addiction touched her own family, her focus shifted toward prevention, recovery, and meaningful support. The conversation explores how Sterling Heights Police Department partnerships with programs like Hope Not Handcuffs, the Comeback Quick Response Team, and Redirect have helped move the community away from arrest first responses and toward approaches proven to reduce suffering and save lives.     Episode 28: Behind the Badge & the Bark

    Officer Jeremy Walleman has wanted to be a K9 handler since childhood, inspired by his father who worked with a police dog when Jeremy was growing up. But achieving that goal took years of hard work and dedication. A Ferris State graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice, Officer Walleman began his career in Eastpointe in 2004 before joining the Sterling Heights Police Department. Since then, he has served on road patrol, worked as a fatal accident investigator in the Traffic Division, and become a key member of the Special Response Team (SRT) since 2012. He also served as a PT instructor at the police academy, where both Officer Reynolds and Sgt. Coates trained with him. After 13 years with SHPD, Officer Walleman received his first K9 partner, Ernie. Today, he works alongside K9 Chip, forming a highly skilled team serving the Sterling Heights community. In this episode of Talk’n the Beat, Officer Reynolds and Sgt.     Episode 27: Getting to Know Chief Satterfield

    After an extended break, Talk’n the Beat returns for Season 3! A lot has changed since the end of Season 2, including Sgt. Kevin Coates’ recent promotion and the arrival of a new chief leading the Sterling Heights Police Department. So, what better way to kick things off than by sitting down with the department’s new top cop? In this episode, Officer Larry Reynolds and Sgt. Kevin Coates welcome Chief Andy Satterfield, who brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience to Sterling Heights, most recently serving as a captain with the Troy Police Department. Over the years, he has worked as a patrol officer, detective, sniper, honor guard member, and command officer, earning recognition for his leadership in accreditation, crime prevention, and traffic-safety initiatives. Chief Satterfield also reveals that he was a listener of Talk’n the Beat even before getting the job, tuning in as part of his interview prep!     In this milestone 25th episode of "Talk'n the Beat," Officers Larry Reynolds and Kevin Coates sit down with Captain Mario Bastianelli to discuss making a difference in the community through innovative policing strategies. Captain Bastianelli's journey in the Sterling Heights Police Department began in traffic before eventually rising through the ranks to Lieutenant, where he served as the department's Public Information Officer. In that role, he worked diligently to represent the department with pride and honor, ensuring the public saw the positive contributions of Sterling Heights police officers. Now overseeing Operations as a Captain, Bastianelli reflects on his career and shares his approach to addressing problems from new angles. He played a key role in developing the Quick Response Team, designed to break the cycle of drug overdoses by providing immediate assistance to those struggling with addiction. This initiative led to the creation of the Redirect Program, which pauses criminal cases related to drug use to offer offenders a chance to break free from their addiction. By targeting the root cause of crimes such as theft and burglary, the Redirect Program aims to reduce these offenses by addressing the underlying addiction issues.     Episode 22: “Reunite the Fight” - A Marine’s New Mission

    In this compelling episode of "Talk’n the Beat," Officers Larry Reynolds and Kevin Coates engage with Scott Gatto, a former Marine whose service commenced dramatically on the morning of September 11, 2001, as he arrived at his base in Hawaii. His challenging deployment to Iraq, which included fierce combat in Falluja, was just the beginning of his journey. After leaving the service, Scott became acutely aware of the pervasive mental health struggles among his fellow Marines, many of whom were succumbing to the pressures through tragic means. Moved by their struggles and the insufficient support from the VA, he founded "Reunite the Fight." This vital organization, founded by veterans of intense combat in Fallujah, is dedicated to reducing veteran suicides through reunions, retreats, and ongoing support. These events do more than just bring veterans together; they restore the deep connections made in service, providing emotional and practical support, including job placements and counseling. In this first installment of a two-part series, Scott shares his profound experiences in the military, the formation of his nonprofit, and its crucial mission: to ensure no veteran feels alone in their battle back home.
