  1. Building a farm with smart borrowing and pivoting from wholesale to retail with Brian Bates of Bear Creek Organic Farm in Michigan

Building a farm with smart borrowing and pivoting from wholesale to retail with Brian Bates of Bear Creek Organic Farm in Michigan

Brian Bates and his wife Anne run Bear Creek Organic Farm in Petoskey, Michigan. A little over a decade after starting their farm, they are grossing over $1.5 million from their on-farm store- which is surprising considering that before COVID, their farm was mostly wholesale, whereas now most of their sales come from on-farm retail. In retrospect, it’s easy to think the last decade was an uninterrupted period of growth; however in this interview, we’ll talk about the bumps along the way and how they overcame them. We also talk about the big pivot that changed their farm from wholesale to retail, how they have used smart borrowing over the years to grow their business, and how they farm year-round and take direction from their customers to make sure they’re providing what their customers want.   Connect With Guest: Website: bearcreekorganicfarm.com Instagram: @bearcreekorganicfarm   Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   Farmhand is the virtual assistant built for farmers—helping CSAs scale sales, run error-free fulfillment, and deliver 5-star service. “Lower the noise” on the farm with detailed planning and systems with Luke Sheldrick of Terramor Farm in Ontario

Luke Sheldrick and his partner Dana run Terramor Farm in Burnstown, Ontario, about an hour west of Ottawa. After a decade of growing vegetables and cut flowers for a CSA, local restaurants and retail as well as farmers markets, Luke uses a number of systems to plan out the farm year and keep the plan on track through the haze of the season. In addition to hearing about the farm, we’ll discuss how this all comes together to plan crops, keep in touch with customers and keep track of employees. Luke is also a partner with the Market Gardener Institute, where he serves as a community expert in the Masterclass and teaches the Crop Plan Accelerator program. We also talk about Luke's three different bed preparation protocols including no-till, minimal-till and mow-till. So listen to this episode for tips on selling to restaurants, how to find the sweet spot between over-and-under diversification in markets and crops, plus market cards vs a traditional CSA and more. How farmers are changing cropping strategies in response to a changing climate with Masha Vernik

This week’s podcast guest Masha Vernik interviewed nearly 30 farmers in the Pacific Northwest about how they are changing their cropping strategies in response to climate change for her master’s thesis at The University of Washington. In the process, she collected a lot of data and anecdotes about all aspects of how farmers in the region are being affected by, and adapting to, climate change.  In addition to her academic work, Masha has also worked on several farms in the region. Regardless of where your farm is located, there is a lot to learn from this interview about how climate change is playing out, and strategies for increasing resilience in the face of increasingly erratic weather.   Connect With Guest: Website: mashavernik.com   Podcast Sponsors: Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   This episode is brought to you by Tend, the all-in-one, AI-powered farm management platform trusted by modern growers. Changing mum bloom time with light deprivation and recovering from natural disaster with Rose and Rick Bengtson of Ice Moon Farms in Texas

During their first full season, Rick and Rose Bengtson of Ice Moon Farms suffered catastrophic damage from wind and flooding. As devastating as that was, they bounced back and we can learn from the way they rebuilt and the strategies they used to prolong cashflow later into the fall to make up for some of the income they missed in the summer.  One of those strategies was holiday wreaths and amaryllis- another was using light deprivation to get chrysanthemums to bloom earlier. Learn how this worked out in practice and considerations if you’re thinking of doing the same thing. Plus, hear about their homemade bed shaper, their pest and other challenges, how they overcome them and more in this week’s podcast interview.   Connect With Guest: Facebook: @icemoonfarmsllc Instagram: @icemoonfarmsllc   Free companion article: All about chrysanthemums by Rebecca Kutzer-Rice from Growing for Market Magazine   Podcast Sponsors: Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   There are a lot of farm sales platforms out there, but there’s only one that’s cooperatively owned by farmers. That’s GrownBy — your all-in-one solution to simplify farm sales. JAN 13

Late-season superstars: heirloom chrysanthemums from propagation to sale with Kate Dagnal of Goose Creek Gardens in Pennsylvania

Heirloom chrysanthemums fill an important role for local growers- as very late bloomers they can be one of the last flowers in the fall to keep cash flow going after others have succumbed to the cold. Our guest this week, Kate Dagnal of Goose Creek Gardens, grows thousands of bouquets every year for grocery stores, and heirloom chrysanthemums are the anchor flower she uses to finish out the season. In this interview we go deep on everything you need to know to grow great heirloom chrysanthemums, including propagation, growing, harvesting and postharvest. We discuss why new varieties of mums aren’t being sold in the US (thus the term “heirloom”) and some important differences mums have from other flowers- they need to be propagated from cuttings, and day length is what triggers them to bloom. Heirloom mums come in a wide range of shapes and colors- from big focal flowers to delicate sprays- so they can play many different roles in late season design work. They also have excellent vase life if handled properly- listen to this week’s interview for everything from how to propagate, what stage to harvest, how much frost protection they need, how to handle after harvest, favorite varieties and more!   Connect With Guest: Website: goosecreekgardens.com Instagram: @goosecreekgardens   Free companion article: All about chrysanthemums by Rebecca Kutzer-Rice from Growing for Market Magazine Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   This episode is brought to you by Tend, the all-in-one, AI-powered farm management platform trusted by modern growers. Perennial vegetables to plant once and harvest many times with Michalina Hunter of Cicada Seeds in British Columbia

This week Michalina Hunter tells us how she got so interested in perennial vegetables that she started a seed company specializing in them, Cicada Seeds! In this interview with host April Parms Jones, we hear about the advantages of vegetables that you can plant once and harvest many times, including crops like skirret, spinach vine, perennial kale, perpetual leeks, perennial celery, sweet lettuce and more. They also talk about how to propagate perennial crops, since some of them involve techniques like cold stratification or vegetative propagation to get them going. Lastly, they discuss how to prepare ground for crops that are going to be there for the long haul, including the importance of soil health, and the participatory research project Michalina is starting to get feedback from growers on these perennial crops.   Connect With Guest: Website: cicadaseeds.ca Instagram: @cicadaseeds   Podcast Sponsors: Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   Rimol Greenhouse Systems designs and manufactures greenhouses that are built to be intensely rugged, reliably durable, and uniquely attractive – to meet all your growing needs. 7. Breedng biodiverse Pacific Northwest-adapted seeds with Andrew Still of Adaptive Seeds in Oregon

    12/30/2025

Breedng biodiverse Pacific Northwest-adapted seeds with Andrew Still of Adaptive Seeds in Oregon

This week Andrew Still tells us how Adaptive Seeds started in 2009 as an outgrowth of the Seed Ambassadors Project to steward and keep rare and heritage vegetable and flower varieties alive. In the intervening 15+ years they have furthered their mission of preserving open pollinated varieties and breeding new ones that are adapted to the Pacific Northwest. Interviewer Andrew Mefferd had the pleasure of visiting the farm where they grow much of their seed a decade ago- now we get to catch up and hear about how this farm-based seed company has grown in the intervening decade. We hear about how Adaptive Seeds started after sourcing hundreds of heritage varieties on a seed exploration trip to Europe, how they have decided which varieties to add to their catalog, and why they leave variation in some varieties and mixes. We also discuss balancing flavor and productivity in breeding, the importance of transparency in seed sourcing, and how dehybridization can be used to “preserve” favorite varieties that have been dropped from the seed trade. We round out the conversation out with the importance of biodiversity, the impact of intellectual property on seed innovation, and how growers can try breeding their own varieties.   Connect With Guest: Website: adaptiveseeds.com Instagram: @adaptive_seeds   Podcast Sponsors- Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   This episode is brought to you by Tend, the all-in-one, AI-powered farm management platform trusted by modern growers. 8. The fertilizer you make every day: fertilizing with urine with the Rich Earth Institute

    12/23/2025

The fertilizer you make every day: fertilizing with urine with the Rich Earth Institute

Farmers are used to the idea of fertilizing with manure, however one species’ output is usually not used: our own. This is despite the fact that effluent from water treatment is a large contributor to excess nitrogen in our waterways and the nutrient pollution that’s responsible for the “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico. If we could recapture those nutrients, not only could it give farmers a cheap, readily-available source of fertility, but it would reduce the amount of pollution going into our waterways. Our three guests this week just finished a SARE grant project looking at using urine as a fertilizer. Tatiana Schreiber and Abe Noe-Hays are from the Rich Earth Institute, and Deborah Aller is at Cornell University, and on this week’s podcast they tell us what they learned looking at the soil health impacts and farmer perspectives on using various forms of human waste and control treatments for fertilizer. They tell us what products they used, how farmers can make use of them, and how this technology might be scaled up in the future.   Connect With Guest: Website: richearthinstitute.org Instagram: @peecyclers   Podcast Sponsors: Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support:   Since 1972 Ohio Earth Food has been the go-to source for soil testing, consulting as well as the highest performing and most cost effective granular and liquid fertilizers, seed starting soils, foliar sprays and disease and insect controls.
