What began as an attempt to bring more customers through the door quickly spiraled into accusations of ableism, heated online attacks, an unsuccessful apology, and a marathon community meeting. We follow the story as the bar’s financial problems collide with internal community conflict, leaving its remaining owner personally responsible for a $50,000 loan and thousands in back rent.     Beef prices are up, the meatpacking industry is dominated by a handful of major processors, and President Trump says he has a solution: give farmers and ranchers more freedom to process their own meat. But will the proposal actually address the problem—or is it another executive action that falls short of meaningful reform? David & Joe dig into how America’s meatpacking industry became so consolidated in the first place, tracing the story back to The Jungle, the creation of federal meat-processing regulations, and the increasing difficulty smaller processors face competing with massive corporations. They compare Trump’s proposal with the PRIME Act, which would give states more flexibility over locally processed meat, and question whether an executive order can accomplish reforms that ultimately require Congress. They also discuss why Trump hasn’t backed similar legislation despite having opportunities to do so for years. The conversation ultimately comes back to affordability: with beef increasingly expensive and major fast-food companies dependent on cheap meat, who actually benefits from Washington’s proposed solutions—and what would it take to create a genuinely competitive meat industry again?     End of Empires Pt. 2: A New Monetary Competitor on the Horizon?

    The conversation centers on China’s growing gold reserves and its effort to build an international network that makes it easier to trade between yuan, gold, and critical commodities like oil. With China accumulating gold, expanding storage capacity in Hong Kong, and developing yuan-priced gold contracts, the guys ask whether the pieces of a genuine alternative to the dollar-based financial system are beginning to fall into place. They revisit the Bretton Woods system and Nixon’s decision to end dollar-to-gold convertibility in 1971 before examining how China’s strategy differs from a traditional gold-backed currency. Rather than formally backing the yuan with gold, China appears to be building infrastructure that could make converting yuan into physical gold easier and more attractive for international businesses and trading partners. The discussion then expands to BRICS, America’s use of sanctions and the SWIFT financial system, and why countries may increasingly want alternatives to U.S.-controlled financial infrastructure. The guys consider what a gradual decline in global dollar demand could mean for Americans—including more expensive imports, inflationary pressure, diminished U.S. leverage overseas, and potentially stronger incentives for domestic manufacturing. From there, they explore China’s efforts to extend this emerging gold network through Malaysia and Africa, where Chinese companies and financial institutions are building relationships with gold producers and connecting them more closely to Chinese markets. Finally, the guys ask whether China is simply playing a longer game—building the economic infrastructure necessary to benefit from American decline rather than directly confronting the United States. They discuss the difficulty democracies have with long-term planning, America’s debt and spending problems, and whether political change will come only once these economic pressures become impossible for ordinary Americans to ignore. Is a post-dollar financial system inevitable? Maybe not. But the infrastructure for an alternative may already be taking shape.
