    Bright Lights Beyond #31 - The Seven Deadly Sins: Pride

    Welcome back to the Beyond, BLBers! Season 6 is officially here, and with Halloween just around the corner, Lexie and Andie are kicking things off with a spooky new theme: the seven deadly sins. Lexie shares what inspired the idea. She wanted to explore a topic everyone knows but might not have really dug into, and see how people who have died and come back might understand these sins differently. Andie walks through the history of the list, which started with a fourth-century monk named Evagrius Ponticus and his "eight evil thoughts." It changed a few times over the centuries, but one sin always held its place at the top. Pride, the focus of this first episode, was seen as the ruler of all the others. From there, the two go over the virtue that balances each sin, plus Andie's list of movies that fit each one. Lexie traces pride through stories like Icarus and The Odyssey, where Odysseus's hubris costs him and his men. They also get into the fine line between confidence and pride, and how we might identify when one starts turning into the other. They close by bringing it back to near-death experiences. Andie shares research on ego death, including the first study to measure how often people lose their sense of self during an NDE. Nearly everyone in the study did, and the deeper the experience, the more they shifted from "I" to "we." Happy Halloween, Beyonders!
